@Matthewnh not surprised about Wildwood being a hit and feeling so real to you. Laika are absolute masters of their craft and Stop-Motion is such a good medium because it is an actual physical thing captured on camera and doesn't have the same look as CGI.

I actually watched Coraline recently on 4k disc for the first time, and it was absolutely mind-blowing. And it had very much the same effect where it draws you into the story more because it is really there captured on cameras, despite being these fantastical scenes.

I'd recommend getting the 4ks of their other movies if you haven't already, as they really benefit from being watched on physical media, non-streamed.

@FuriousMachine Apologies for the late reply - ‘boring life-stuff’ as you put it 😅

I looked into the Films from the South festival and it looks like a pretty great program. I’m interested to hear how it goes! Im particularly curious about Hope. If you haven’t seen The Wailing, it’s absolutely worth checking out. I still haven’t checked out his earlier work yet though.

I saw Wildwood over the weekend. I know you’re seeing it soon so I’ll keep my thoughts light at this point but suffice it to say, you’re in for a treat!!

@Ravix Laika outdid themselves with this one. I remember thinking to myself after Kubo that stop motion animation couldn’t get any more epic or beautiful. Needless to say, I feel rather silly for ever thinking such a thing. Wildwood is a stop motion spectacle the likes of which I’ve never seen. It’s truly wondrous. Do what you can to see it in a theatre.

@Metonymy I was (am) wholly unfamiliar with the people behind Hope, I just noted the superlatives coming out of festivals and figured it was a must-see. Happily surprised to be able to catch it on the big screen as well. Interestingly, The Wailing has been on my radar for some time now, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I had no idea it was the same filmmaker!

Booked a ticket for Wildwood this Sunday and Godzilla Minus Zero on Tuesday, so Excite Excite Excite!

@FuriousMachine Very nice! Hope it goes well for you, that’s a lot of spectacle within a short period of time. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any of your thoughts in the coming days.

HMV have got a sale on Arrow 4K's currently. I've got my eye on Spaceballs, True Romance, Time Bandits and Dark City.

My most recent purchase is the 4k boxed set of the A Better Tomorrow Trilogy, by John Woo and Tsui Hark.

Saw those films on video many years ago, and would love to get around to watching them all again.
I recall seeing Chow Yun Fat using a fake £100 bill to light a cigarette, and looking effortlessly cool doing it.

Now, if I could only hold of a 4k copy of “The Killer”, that is not the riduculously overpriced import from Singapore…..

Matthew.

@Matthewnh That is such an iconic scene! It had also burned itself into my memory and I bought the trilogy from Arrow with the two later movies unseen, so looking forward to getting stuck into them. I also managed to nab both The Killer and Hard Boiled from them, neither of which I have seen this side of the millennium, so I need to clear space for a Chow Yun Fat week soon.

As for The Killer, keep an eye on Arrow. They have a tendency to release non-limited (unlimited?) editions of best sellers some time after the release of the limiteds with cool stuff. My experience is that the disc content is the same, only the packaging and physical tat differs. Still, I try to grab the limited ones, just in case there is no follow-up releases.
I'll give a shout if I see it somewhere with a reasonable price tag.

Note: Might be worth checking if the ozzies have it. My Norwegian dealer listed some freakishly expensive titles, mislabeled "USA Import", which turned out to actually be "Australia Imports" from ViaVision/Imprint and Umbrella. I checked Umbrella and they shipped to Norway at a fracture of the price my Norwegian retailer listed, so I pre-ordered Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Cube and Memento from them.
So maybe that Singapore import is available cheaper elsewhere?

@JohnnyShoulder you should definitely get Dark City... wait a minute 🤔😂

Misery and Troy are Arrow, if they are on there, they are worth a look, also 12 Monkeys is an Arrow release. I'd grab 12 Monkeys and Misery over spaceballs and time bandits, but eh, who am I to tell you what to do 👀

And, yeah... True Romance is a fantastic lead-in to GTA 6 as well, so definitely go for that! I'm going to rewatch that in the build up, I reckon.

There's actually a tonne of GTA adjascent movies that I jotted down that may be fun to get through before GTA releases. It might be cool if a few people on here get on some of those, too.

Ah, here:

True Romance. Jackie Brown. Pulp Fiction. Reservoir Dogs. Wild at Heart. Red Rock West. Blood Simple. Out of Sight. Natural Born Killers. Drive. I feel like there were some others, too.

@Werehog @FuriousMachine I missed this but, #1 congratulations, Hoggy. Spooky season complete!? And #2 I know of a few people that actually prefer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to Beetl... ahhh, you're not getting me that easily. I may even be one of them, i'd have to rewarch both again, though. But maybe 1 was, in its time, mostly great as it was so different and it has since inspired a bunch of other stuff, but I think they maybe were just more confident in 2, it was perhaps maybe just more fun, somehow? And sometimes fun is the key. It depends what you want out of movies, I guess. Burton movies are very watchable, either way. I'm thinking of watching Sleepy Hollow soon, and perhaps Corpse Bride again. I think Corpse Bride would be a good recommendation for you, Sir Hog, if you've not seen it. 100% stop-motion goodness.

@JohnnyShoulder it seems I also missed your post about the Kubrick collection. But I think I shall pass on that one. I'm yet to go down the criterion rabbit hole, and I think I only have one Criterion release, which is Blow Out I have a couple of regular Kubrick releases, so its all good. I mean, I like Wes Anderson, but i'm not getting that massive collection either, which was also Criterion?

Now... if they did a complete, complete, complete Coen brothers, maybe i'd almost be tempted. But i've avoided their single 4ks, so far. I'd prefer Arrow, honestly, so Fargo is pre-ordered. Criterion still gives me extra poncey vibes, honestly 😅

Are you going to take the plunge and invest in the complete Kubrick? 💀

@Ravix I went into my local store (for local people) and picked up True Romance and Time Bandits for the same price online. Spaceballs wasn't in stock when I checked online earlier and I couldn't find Dark City in the store. Don't think the other films you mentioned were in the sale that I noticed. I think 12 Monkeys was, but I'm pretty sure it is one of the blu rays I kept and I'm not double dipping.

I didn't think of watching any films to get in the mood for GTA VI. I do have Pulp Fiction on 4K though. I'd probably watch True Romance first as I've not seen that in an age. I've also got The Big Lebowski, Sicario and Training Day which could be good ones to watch.

I think I will need a bigger house to fit the Kubrick collection. So that is a no from me.

I preferred the original Beetlejuice to the sequel. I didn't think the sequel was awful or anything, but the OG did most things better with only superficial stuff like some special effects being better in the sequel.

While there's no shame in being an anomaly, I'd advise against claiming to be one in comparison to me, since I'm pretty much the walking definition!

Oh, and I hope you enjoy Godzilla Minus Zero on Tuesday! Looking forward to your thoughts!

Bringing in @Ravix and @JohnnyShoulder on the ongoing topic of the Beetlejuice films, I can totally respect both sides of the coin. The original had to work a lot harder to achieve what it did, and I admire it for that, but I just reckon my admiration was stronger for the sequel, which didn't have to hand-craft itself in the same way, but did so anyway, rejecting the easy CGI route for stop-motion animation and practical sets. In this day and age, I applaud anybody who's trying to keep that kinda stuff alive, and I think that passion and sense of fun bled through onto the screen a lot more as a result (which is the point Rav made).

Very much so, yes. I'm not normally a participant, not least because I'm very receptive to mood. If and when I do engage with spook'ems, it's usually over the summer months, when I'm actively looking for an escape from all that oppressive sunshine and warmth.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your Corpse Bride recommendation, and will keep it in mind, thanks!

The week was brutal enough after Walter Koenig on Monday, but this... yeah, this really hurts.

PSA: Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Undertone and The Frighteners all available on 4K disc this week in the UK. I've not seen Undertone yet but I've heard good things about it. Supposed to have really good sound design and use it effectively.

I watched Keeper last night directed by Osgood Perkins, son Anthony Perkins from Psycho, who also directed Longlegs (which is awesome). I enjoyed it! A different kind of film to Longlegs and it took a few unexpected turns.

Also saw Hokum and I didn't do much for me unfortunately. I didn't find it scary at all, so was surprised to hear that people wet themselves seeing it.

@JohnnyShoulder I've had the Criterion Frankenstein 4K set for a few days - the transfer is incredible and the director's cut has significantly more Charles Dance but it's not worth £45 in my opinion.

  • I didn't that scary, I think because so many of the tropes were predictable. I did find a lot of accuracy in the folklore, it featured a lot of very obscure folklore. I broke it down a couple of weeks ago, explained the different figures/entities and lore behind all of those very subtle references. That's what I really liked about the movie but I think the majority of the folklore was lost on a modern audience. Which is unfortunate but it happens when a Director or Writer is passionate about something so obscure, they think everyone else will get it, they don't. The man with mushrooms in the forest was a fun touch, I'd never heard about goats looking at their reflection and becoming higher (if that's a term) I don't think it's true but it was a funny addition.

Off to see "Pans Labyrinth" 4K 20th anniversary at the cinema tomorrow and booked "Godzilla Minus Zero" for after work on Thursday. Looking forward to seeing Pan on the big screen and the return of Godzilla who looks bigger and meaner than he was last time around.

Just finished watching "BrightBurn" great movie with a different take on The Superman origin.

Is there a better blu-ray to 4K upgrade than Alex Proyas' The Crow? Until I saw this transfer, I hadn't realised that the black levels on literally every other home video release (crucial to the visuals of a movie like this) had been completely screwed up. Lovely steelbook, too.
