@themightyant Ah, that could be why then. I never did see a shot of it myself but he looked way off on the onboard.
Hopefully we get a good race later on. It's still early days but I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes finish 2nd in the Constructor's Championship this year. Outside of the McLaren, it seems like the most consistent car. Depends if and when Ferrari can sort their seemingly self-inflicted issues out.
Feels odd getting ready for a race this late. Only discovered about all the late penalties in the Sprint this morning. Real shame for Alex dropping out of the points. I'm hoping Williams have a good race to make up for it.
Will we actually see many overtakes.
That was probably the best Miami GP yet, at least as far as I can remember. It was only the final 10 laps or so where it settled down to little happening. Some great overtakes. The McLarens definitely dominated at this track today.
Happy for Albon picking up a quality 5th place.
@Kairuuu Whilst I would put Piastri favourite at the moment it's way too early to call anything for the season.
If Miami can have more races like that going forward maybe the contract until 2041(!!!) isn't too crazy.
@BearsEatBeets Yeah, it's definitely super early to lock in a prediction, but I'll commit now and eat my words later.
It was a relatively good race though and definitely better than previous Miami GP's. Also, I definitely thought that contract extension was a typo when I initially read it. 😂
I was looking forward to qualifying but damn that’s a huge crash for Yuki… damn. Glad, and amazed, he just hopped out and walked away. Amazing safety tech.
@themightyant I was quite shocked by the replay. Really bizarre place to lose control and go. With him flying up like that I'm so glad no parts flew anywhere near anyone and he didn't end up upside down in the gravel. It's great he walked out so easily just found it a little odd it seemed to take ages before any stewards or help turned up.
Blimey now another crash.
Edit: With how important qualifying is here, Ferrari really seem to be struggling.
Edit 2: Wow! Nice one Carlos! Looks like 'mediums' might have been an idea for some of the others. Great Quali so far.
Piastri continues to impress, Max doing what Max does, George also super consistent this season. Then Lando just making small errors when under pressure again, only P4. Half a second back to Alonso, then the two Williams. Tight qualifying.
Crazy that the soft won’t even manage ONE lap at full pelt. Cutting edge technology. lol
Almost time for first of the 'No Overtake' double-header. Maybe they should have forced the teams to use that super soft C6 tyre in the race and not just qualifying. It might have forced a 2-stopper.
@themightyant yeah it was a little odd. George's comments on the radio would seem like he felt Oscar took the corner much slower than George wanted behind.
Hopefully there might be good strategy mix up coming up it seems.
@Titntin Agreed, ended up being a fun race with lots of overtakes, which I wasn't expecting.
@BearsEatBeets I think it was a Safety car not a VSC second time around because they had to get more machinery and stewards onto the track, certainly took a lot longer to clear.
Agree with George, and Oscar said the same, he braked too early which both held up George and let Max in, should have never had an overtake from there but Oscar let him in.
Split strategies made it exciting and a good result for the Tifosi, starting 11th and 12th to finish P4 and P6, good drives from both drivers, they had good race pace when not in a DRS train. Lewis starting on the hard tire paid off with the VSC, always a possibility if you can delay your pit stop. Max and a few others also from that.
@Titntin@themightyant I was hoping by referring to this race as the first of the 'No Overtake' races that fate might prove me wrong and this race ended up being better than I expected. I have zero hopes for next week but I'm curious to see if the new enforced 2-stop will make Monaco a tad more exciting.
@themightyant yeah when I first commented about the safety car I thought Kimi had stopped in a similar place to Ocon but it turned out to be further enough ahead to require the crane. Shame it took so long to clear though but understand that machinery has to completely be gone before restarting. I really don't understand the rule with sending the back markers forward to go all the way back round to back though. Surely it would be a lot quicker for them to pull to one side of the track and just let others past until they are in the right place. It would have got things going a lap or 2 sooner.
Yes great recovery from Ferrari from where they started. I was hoping for an Albon podium when he was 3rd for a bit in the later stages but still a great result for Williams.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Bull upgrades keep Max on a par with the McLarens at Monaco.
Oh yeah and one final thought. I really think a lot of tracks should look into ways to make pit stops quicker. If the layout allows maybe have new in/out lanes that maybe cut parts of the track to make the time loss smaller. If they could get the time down to 15-20 seconds instead of 20-30 we could see much more strategic variances. I know some of the tracks have no way of doing this but I can think a few that could make a bit of a short cut to offset some of the speed loss.
@BearsEatBeets I think sending back markers to the back all around the track is to allow them to heat their tires and not let their car/brakes overheat which is what happens when they go too slowly (see Alonso coming out the pits on fire), but not 100% sure on that, take with a pinch of salt.
Shorter pit stops might help on some tracks but would be pretty logistically hard on most, there's just too many structures in they way, but it's an interesting idea. Perhaps on new street tracks as they design them.
My biggest peeve is DRS trains, we see it every race where faster cars just end up stuck behind each other and fall further and further behind the group ahead. Yet I don't know how they fix this. It's also linked to the size (length and width) of the cars which just makes overtaking harder.
Always fascinated by rule changes and will be interested to see if next years smaller, lighter, more nimble cars, without DRS but with a manual override button for overtaking will solve some of these problems. But usually it's the laws of unintended consequences, and some other issue will instead fill the void. Fingers crossed.
Sunday is often, though not always, pretty dull at Monaco, but I like the build up, practice and qualifying. The race is usually more influenced by qualifying.
Ferrari found a lot of pace and were fastest in FP1 and FP2 which was surprising, will be interesting to see if that follows through to qualifying. Lawson and Hadjar also were high up in FP2.
Will also be interesting to see what the tire change (i believe this years medium was last years soft), which is faster for quali? and having to do two stops will do in the race. Will teams near the back get an early pit stop in and then try and join the back of the pack. Could be fascinating.
Lastly they really need to have a word about cars going slowly round blind corners, a few close shaves yesterday and could be horrific with the speed delta between two cars. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.
Update 1: where have red bull come from? They mikes off the pace. Seems to happen every weekend more than others.
Update 2: mistake from Lewis but absolutely terrifying onboard as you come round the blind corner and suddenly 2 cars that weren’t ahead going into the corner are suddenly right in front of you. Pretty much exactly what I was worries about above. They need to sort this or there’s going to be a horrific incident.
