Topic: Final fantasy discussion thread

Probably my least favourite FF but I still like it and I will replay it ...I liked XII more the second time around so maybe this will surprise me too.

FF9 was boring. I had to give up on it well into the second disc, unfortunately.

Never played FFVIII. I have access to it as a PS1 Classic, but maybe I'll experience it in HD for the time time.

I've played a bit of Final Fantasy VIII. Have the PS classic version on my ps3. Got to the second disc before stopping it for some reason... Maybe I should give it a go again.

The plot is a bit weird from what I remember though

Also I haven't touched FF IX before... In fact I've only played I (Via emulator), III (On DS), IV (Also On DS), VII (As a ps one classic), X, X-2, XII, XII Reveneant Wings, XIII and XIII-2.

Honestly X-2 is still probably my favourite followed by X and XII in joint second

@Ralizah This sounds lame, but playing FF9 was the best week of my life :') Picked it up after school the day it came out, Friday 16th February 2001, and played it non-stop until the following weekend (it was half term!)

Absolutely loved every minute of it, not only do I think it's an excellent game in its own right it was absolutely the right experience at the right time for me. I know opinions are opinions n that, and I agree there are some sections which drag a little (although they are more toward the end) I just can't comprehend how anyone could consider it boring.

It helped break my Ultima Online addiction too haha.

As to my reasoning... the plot is incredibly slow compared to VII. The world is kind of ugly and shrouded in mist. The early sections of the game are VERY linear (granted, the same is true of VII, but it opens up a lot sooner). I really don't like a lot of the activities in it (the weird mini-game you can play with the Chocobo; frog pond maintenance; trying to get Quina to learn new spells). Not a fan of the 'learning skills from equipment' system. The battles are INCREDIBLY slow.

I might return to it at some point and rush through the game to see how the plot develops (I hear it becomes very decent later on), but I really haven't been enjoying myself thus far. I don't know. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for it? Maybe I'd enjoy an HD version of it more? It's hard to say. I don't really want to restart this far in, though. I already did that once when I switched from the PS1 version to my Vita version near the start of the game, and the opening segments felt like they took forever to clear the second time around.

@Ralizah Oh come on, I've been gaming my whole life and even I can happily admit that it's kinda lame that the best week in my 32 years was one spent playing a video game haha :')

Alright, you asked for it...

It moves along at a fair clip in my opinion, it has a bombastic opening section with some calmer moments for a bit of character development, I'd say it's incredibly engaging all the way up to the end of the Festival of the Hunt section in Lindblum. It does take a little bit of a nose dive after that, but only compared to how engaging the earlier sections are.

The mist IS a major plot device to be fair, and it does clear on other continents, and eventually across the entire world map. I agree it doesn't make exploring the world map very nice initially, but the fantastic overworld music makes up for that, and if you played it on release it was graphically in line with expectations for the time.

No more or less linear than 7 or 8 I'd say, they are all much of a muchness in that regard.

Chobobo Hot & Cold is dope!! Frog catching had its moments, the card games were fun, but I wouldn't really consider learning spells for Quina a side activity really.

I always thought it was a pretty good system, it immediately made even weaker gear have a use, even if you were just equipping it for a short period to earn enough AP to learn skills attached to it.

Can't argue with that, although at the time it didn't bug me at all to be honest.

At the end of the day playing it back in the day was the equivilant of playing a game like Cyberpunk today, you'd never love it as much as I do but I hope one day you give it another go and manage to complete it. Steiner, Vivi, Dagger and Zidane are the best!

Nah. Besides, that's way more likable and relatable than saying something like the best week of your life was spent with a girlfriend or something.

Agree to disagree. I feel like the game has spent one and a half discs with the characters trying to escort Dagger somewhere. There are some action moments, but, in the absence of larger plot movement, it feels like padding.

I don't mind muddy PS1 graphics in my games if they're colorful muddy PS1 graphics. FF9 looks like Silent Hill on the world map. Good to hear it eventually clears up, though.

I dunno about FF8, but FF7 was way less slow and linear. So, hours into the second disc of FF9, I'm still escorting a princess somewhere she's wanted to go since the beginning of the game. I think I fought some weird black mage robots at some point. A rat lady lost her home or something.

By the end of the first disc in FF7, the entirety of the Midgar saga has transpired, including an epic motorcycle escape sequence; I tracked Sephiroth across a continent; learned about Red XIII's people and home life; visited the gold saucer; traveled on a cargo ship; explored some awesome dungeons; I fought Jenova at least twice; and shockingly lost a main party member in one of the most legendary video game scenes of all time.

I forgot about that awful card game! Ditched that early on.

You kind of have to go out of your way to have Quina learn a lot of its spells, so it feels like a side activity. A lot of those are kind of pointless, though.

Alternatively, it keeps me using outdated gear just to learn abilities from it. And it takes a long time to learn abilities from some of your gear, making it a big grind.

My current plan is to return to it at some point and complete it. If nothing else, I want to be able to say I played the full game and saw the story from beginning to end. Old FF games aren't terribly long if you don't mess with the side content, so it shouldn't take too much time.

Just bought FF7 advent children DVD, Ff12 remastered ps4, Fist of the North Star ps4, Marvel Hardback Civil War, Shaun Whites snowboarding for the Game boy advance and a wildstyle Lego figure. All for £40. Who's says retail is dead that's better than Ebay!!!

@FullbringIchigo finally get to watch advent children. It completely passed me by.

@themcnoisy just so you know the blu-ray version Advent Children Complete has extra scenes, some redubbed lines and a bit more blood than the DVD edition

@themcnoisy @FullbringIchigo the extra scenes on the Blueray version make SUCH a difference to Advent Children. It’s basically nonsense without them, in my opinion. The extra scenes really changed my mind about the film and I got a lot more out of it. I’d certainly recommend it over the original release.

Weird day today actually. My mate out of the blue asked me to play Dissidia just before. Had a good hours game playing as the onion Knight from ff2. I'm gonna be honest - it's far too crazy and difficult to understand what's going on and like gundam vs you get a lot of missed attacks and enemies running away so it's a constant chase. The arenas need to be smaller and the summon crystals are a stupid mechanic.

@FullbringIchigo nice, I am one of the 10 people who enjoyed Chocobo Racing 😂 came for the fan service, thought it was an alright kart racer!

@kyleforrester87 @FullbringIchigo advent children is a weird film. There's no point to buy guns in midgar I've counted about 200 shots and not 1 has killed anyone. Cloud has turned into a ballet dancer and some of the voice acting is weak. It's a 4/10 from me.

@themcnoisy haha. Was it the extended edition or the DVD?

Some of the voice acting is not great but I did like Rufus, Cloud and Sephiroth.
