@Ravix Canada definitely took a bit to find their feet. I was slightly worried after the scoreless 5 on 3 advantage but we pushed through. Hockey means far too much here for Canada to roll over. Bars were open at 5:00 am! It’s wild. C’mon boys!!! 🇨🇦

@Ravix The officiating overall has been lacking throughout the tournament so I’m not surprised but it is what it is. Can’t let it be a distraction. But yeah, such an entertaining game, which is what we all want at the end of the day. This is some great hockey.

@Metonymy ouch, yeah. America held on because of the goaltender, for sure. It seems it was fated to be @StitchJones and America's day. The missed calls, not capitalising on the 5 on 3, the open net miss, and then eventually a breakaway from one mistake after finally dominating large parts of the game.
I don't love that a golden goal can decide it so early in OT, but it can't go on forever, I suppose 💀

@Ravix I really don’t like a game at this level being decided in 3 on 3. I’d like to see that change going forward. Like, you’ve Zambonied the ice and put 20 minutes on the board. It’s absurd. But like you said, I suppose it can’t go on forever.

@Ravix@Metonymy First, thank you for the congrats. I appreciate it.
I just got done watching on replay. So I'm late to the party here lol.
One thing about this game that pissed me off is, in the US we are trying to grow the game of hockey. Canada doesn't need help with that. Its been huge there for a century. 4nations was a great start at growing the game further in the US. The women's gold this yr helped too. Now today, you have one of and/or possibly the biggest game in hockey history played at 4pm milan time, but that makes it 8am East/5am West. That's just plain stupid. It could have started 8pm Milan time, which is prime time for them for a game of this caliber, to give the US/CAN time to wake up and go out to watch, invites arriving etc. But this olympics was a s*** show from the start with how they handled building the rink so I'm not surprised.
I already gave my opinion on the 3 on 3 before this tourney even started. I think it is F'in stupid. When it went to OT I thought the US was done. When you give Mackinnon, Mcdavid, Macklin, Makar all that open ice, its almost not fair. But that's CAN's roster. They are fast and highly skilled. And both teams have to play by these 3 on 3 rules so. If US had to win gold, I wanted it in regulation so bad. Because I know the likes of Steven Dangle and pretty much 90% of the CAN population is gonna call it BS cause it was 3 on 3. Which I say get the F over it. Because I also know, if CAN won that way, 90% of the US would have called it BS as well. I'm not like that. As i said, I wanted the US to win in regulation and I would have given congrats to CAN no matter how they won if they did. There was just no pleasing anybody with these olympics TBH. Its on the Olympic committee and NHL for not analyzing this from the start.
Helly was the difference maker in this game. He stood on his head. That's how it goes in hockey. Open nets get whiffed on in hockey every game of the NHL season too. Its hard to believe it happened to a guy like Mackinnon, but that's hockey lmao.
As far as the blown too many men on the ice penalty, do you guys honestly want the gold medal game possibly decided late in the 3rd by a too many men penalty? That penalty is a bench minor, in the area of the bench. It doesn't change the trajectory of the puck or players. A game being decided by that penalty would have been more atrocious then deciding it 3 on 3.
As far as that golden goal goes. Obv it was 3 on 3, sucks no matter who's side you're on and who won. But after taking a 2nd look at that play, it was not the breakdown in the O-zone that lead to that for CAN. WTF was connor mcdavid thinking on that play? He didn't look back to see that Makar was far behind the play. He committed to the perimeter to try to attack the puck and left Hughes wide the F open in front of the net. I still think 3 on 3 sucks, but it was not a flukey play that led to any of these two teams winning. Mcdavid totally blew it there and you can't have a Def break down like that in a game with all-world players on both teams, every line.
Oh well. The Olympics was great high level hockey. It will be missed. Went by too fast.
@StitchJones I agree that Canada Sh** the bed on that play 😂 you can say it, I have no dog in the fight, anyway. The US did really good to stay in it and then capitalise. You also hit the post in the 3rd, I think, and that was unlucky as it wasn't getting saved if it was an inch narrower.
I think the best image was Hughes? (I honestly don't know any of the players having not watched ice hockey in years) and his busted teeth after getting the winner. That is Ice Hockey right there and will be in all the papers, i'd assume. Honestly, when you see all the articles and news footage looking back at the result later and tomorrow I think it will hit you more and you will get even more enjoyment from it 😁 personally it reminded me of Derrick White in the NBA finals when he got his head stomped into the floor, carried on, and then got to lift the trophy with his teeth all mangled and chipped, trust me, these are the visuals and moments you will remember down the line 😁
As a neutral it maybe did feel like in the middle of the game the refs weren't calling anything much any way. And I thought the puck and a player got caught up in the too many on the ice. The UK commentary seemed to think it should have been an automatic call, too. I doubt it would have changed anything though as the US were shutting them out on powerplays, which was impressive. A gritty performance!
I wouldn't dwell on it, either, you got the gold and that is all that matters. The time does seem weird, Hockey to me is a evening game in europe anyway, but I suppose they have the closing ceremony and they like to end with Hockey on a Sunday. A saturday night game would be better for everyone though, you'd think.
@Ravix@Metonymy I respect Jon Cooper as a coach. He's done an insane job for CAN hockey and esp the Tampa Bay lightning, but the dude needs to chill. And this is my point. 3 on 3 is gonna cause an uproar on both sides, but I would hope the coach would just stfu, cause if CAN won obv he would have no prob with it being 3 on 3. Here's his quote from the press conference.....
"You take four players off the ice, now hockey’s not hockey anymore," said Cooper. "There’s a reason overtime and shootouts are in play — it’s all TV-driven to end games, so it’s not a long time. There’s a reason why it's not in the Stanley Cup Final or playoffs."
As we all agree, the 3 on 3 is stupid for this caliber game, but come on man. To say that "now hockey's not hockey anymore" is a bit of a stretch. He's a sore F'in loser. Usually the coaches keep their mouths shut and lose or win with dignity. 3 on 3 is not brand new, its been in the NHL for awhile now. So even though it is dumb for a medal game, its not like 3 on 3 was exclusive to the olympics making it this otherworldly head scratcher.
I already knew way before this Olympics started that the overtime rules were really going to sour this whole tournament for somebody. Canadians in Steven Dangle's podcast already saying an asterisk needs to be by the US teams name because it was a 3 on 3 win. What the F ever. They wouldn't feel that way if CAN won. So grow the F up
@StitchJones celebrate the win, man. Don't be listening to the noise. Did they beat you 5 v 5? No. Did they beat you 3 v 3? No. Did they even beat you when they had 5 on 3? No 😁 they had the advantage on paper and you still beat them.
Lakers vs Celtics tonight. Always a spectacle. @Th3Solution are you locking in on the NBA more now, or still waiting until closer to the Playoffs?

@Ravix I get it man, but you just don't understand the Hockey rivalry between the US and CAN. I always give credit to CAN for producing generational talent and owning hockey for years. So it pisses me off when the CAN coach can't even give credit, he's gotta call 3 on 3 "not real hockey" in the presser. F'in sore loser. Typical Canadian BS, but expected better sportsmanship from their coach. Not all CAN's are like this, but they make a bad name of the few that are good sports
@StitchJones@Ravix We’ll get over it 😂 No one in my circles is complaining about an illegitimate win. We’re all happy to have enjoyed the ride. But deciding a - for lack of a better term - ‘post-season’ game in 3-3 sucks no matter what way you slice it. Anyway, the world keeps turning: MacKinnon will be seeing that open net in his nightmares, McDavid’s rbf will remain unchanged, folks will go zebra hunting and hockey will still rock. Cheers!

@Metonymy So you know man, you've been cool as sh** here. We've been talking olympics the whole tourney here in chat and you have been cool asf. So I direct my frustration to the ones that are stamping USA as frauds with this win. I know that's not you. Mackinnon and the Av's have a legit chance to win the cup this year. If they do, Mackinnon will forget about that open net for as fast as it happened. Mcdavid on the other hand, this will bother him for ages. Esp with Matthew Tkachuk being on USA and his Panthers punching the Oilers straight in the mouth for two straight cups. lmao. Alot of people saying that Mcdavid tried to play hero in OT too much and didn't give CAN a chance to dissect the US on some 3 man plays, he tried to go through the whole US team like capt america and it cost CAN. Whats your opinion on that? do you wish he didn't try to be superman and took his time a bit more?
Also, Luka is back to stinking (and sulking) vs the C's. Scheierman and Gonzalez pocketed him, JB just looked at him and he had flashbacks to the finals 💀

@Ravix I didn’t get to watch the game but it looks like the Celts took care of business. That Luka video is pretty hilarious though. 🤣
I haven’t quite locked in yet, but now post-ASG it’s time when things really start to get serious. There’s only about 20-25 games left and so the jockeying for position will be really interesting. Boston will have a hard time catching Detroit for the #1 seed, being 5 games back. So long as they don’t fall below the #3 seed they should have an easy first round, but they are only 2 games ahead of the #4 seed so they need to at least 60-65% win percentage to stay in the top 3, my guess.
The West is pretty crowded in #3-6 with only 1 game separating those 4 teams. And only 3 games separating #3 (Denver currently) from being in the play-in tournament! The Lakers really need to be better than they were tonight, for sure or they may find themselves in the Play-in. I don’t think they’ll fall that far though, and will probably be able to eke out at #5 or #6. I’m still picking OKC to win the West (and win it all), but San Antone is looking really scary.
If the Celtics continue to roll, how do you feel about Tatum coming back for the playoffs (if he’s healthy to)? Are you worried he’d mess up what chemistry they have going? I know it’s hypothetical because he probably won’t be ready in time.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Th3solution honestly, LA were laying bricks all night. It was unreal how bad they are when met with good defence. Luka airballed a layup right in front of the rim late on, too, and I know he missed 5 in a row when we had Scheierman and Gonzalez on him before HT. I don't think Smart scored a point, he was putting up serious bricks. Ayton you never even realise is playing. LeBron was shook. Reaves did resort to just trying to buy fouls with classic flopping and head wobbling. I mean, they should not contend in any division (even G-league) when teams actually lock in vs them on defence 😬
The east is a little frustrating at the moment, I think we have won 9 of 10? And we're still in the same position we've been for months 😅 It would take just one bad run to change everything up, too. It feels like the Celtics have acheived so much, but it'd be nice to see progress in the actual table, you know? 😬 that said, everything at this point is gravy, they will make the playoffs in some form. I guess we have a tougher schedule going in, so other teams around us may be facing tanking teams, which could make a big difference quick.
As for Tatum, I think because he is kind of open there is this narrative that "oh, what if I ruin something good" I don't know if it mental like he'd rather want to come and "save the season" or if he'd rather just get it done outside of high stakes games thus be under less pressure if he can't reach his peak form, but I don't know. But I think Joe knows how to find balance, even with a reducded roster this year, having 3 ball handlers start games was not going to work when we also needed a boost from the bench now Simons can't be that boost (we almost got away with it all season because we didn't always need Pritchard to have great games to win) Like, all year Pritchard had to take a back seat to JB, and thus some games he'd be stood around for 5 minutes doing nothing, now coming off the bench he makes instant impacts again, and doesn't need to stand around. So adding JT is just more balance and options. JT coming back from injury means he doesn't have to have the ball all the time, they can pick and choose moments, they might even work out a way to have either Tatum or Brown in games for the 48 minutes total between them if they accept this makes the most sense for winning. If one has it going, leave them in with the bench crew, if one doesn't, hide them a little, or rest them knowing Pritchard will have it going as a spark from the bench.
I think seeing who JT replaces will be interesting, Sheierman has been starting almost as a player you know you can drop, Hauser is also starting currently, but Hauser has been a bench player a lot anyway. Personally I think they need to keep one of the young defensive minded players in a starting role, meaning JT would eventually be replacing Hauser. I think having a defensive spark ik the starting line up and teo from the bench makes a lot of sense for balance. JT then being a shooter who can also drive and dominate inside? Well, that seems like it would work in this team. JT can also play with the bench, and plays well with Hauser, and i'm pretty sure Vucevic will benefit from Tatum, too.
I think it is a good problem to have, though. JB got his 30+ last night, but his efficiency has dropped and he is sometimes forcing it because we aren't flowing that perfectly ij terms of role players scoring, and those moments would benefit from a shared workload with JT who obviously has skills far beyond the likes of Baylor, Hugo, Jordan and even D White in terms of scoring buckets. If he can get his 30 efficienctly like he has been doing earlier in the season, and JT fills the gaps so JB isn't being run into the ground offensively every night, that would be a very good thing. I also think putting JT on the floor gives Derrick White a free reign to relax a bit, as no one will be thinking about stopping him on drives any more, they will be worried about the two stars cooking them, and then the float game will be back, the threes will drop more and his scoring will sneak up in the games where we need it.
Overall, I'd look at it as a free chance to go for a title. No way anyone would expect Baylor Sheierman, Jordan Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez to be going on a deep playoff run, despite them being so important in a lot of wins we've had. A playoff series needs real skilled problem solvers to surround the pure defensive effort that can boost regular season winning with one or two players scoring. The playoffs will need at least 4 players who can go BIG on any given night. And that means JT, JB, White and Pritchard. With Hauser, Queta and Vucevic supplementing in games that call for different styles of play for the occasional fairly high total. Hauser can go for 20+ if his 3 is hitting. Neemy and Vuc if we need some pick and roll dunks or alley oops, or post ups/pick and roll/pick and pops respectively.
Who do you believe in most in the west? Beyond the obvious. If you watch some extended highlights of last night you definitely won't believe in LA, that's for sure, they are far worse than Dallas ever were. Is it still Houston? San Antonio? Denver?
When it seems you're out of luck.

@Ravix Outside of OKC I think I’m leaning toward San Antonio or Houston to make noise. Agree with you on what I’ve seen of LA. They just don’t feel like they have consistency or roster balance. Ayton is so frustrating to watch. Sometimes (rarely) he can look All-World but then often he’s a complete no-show. Lebron still has it and is amazing for his age, but let’s be real. This team will only go as far as Luka and Reaves take them. And I don’t think their coaching is particularly strong either.
Denver is a conundrum also. Jokic put up a massive triple double last night and they still lost by 11. They’re also basically a two man team and although they have the best player on the planet, there’s a big drop-off after that.
As i mentioned, I’d like to see San Antonio be the ones to go on a roll. I’ve always thought Fox was undervalued and of course Wemby is like some superhuman creation in a lab. Castle and Harper are really good young players. And they have good role players like your boy Kornet and Harrison who have playoff (and even championship) experience. Youth is their biggest weakness, because as we know from history, very few teams go in a roll and win the NBA championship with their first attempt at the playoffs. Spurs are where the Thunder were 2-3 years ago. So I suspect they’re a year or two from truly being a finals contender. Houston’s probably a bigger threat because they have the roster and their star players have more experience. But I’ll root for the Spurs or Nuggets over Rockets, just because I like their players more than KD and Senguin. 😅
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Th3solution what!? Domin-Ayton ain't Dominatin' week in and week out? Colour me shocked. He seems like one of those players who doesn't have an ounce of mentality to actually compete. Let's say I'd back Joe Mazzulla in a legitimate fight versus Ayton, despite Ayton being f***ing huge and Joe looking like a little kid next to most NBA players 😅
I think NBA fans are a bit cooked to be honest. I've seen loads of comments saying Luka has to be MVP because of his numbers. These people don't watch competitive games. Numbers mean nothing to a players value on a team. Maybe it isn't all his fault, they haven't exactly built a team around him to help him out, but still. Most talented player of the year, maybe. Most valuable, not a chance.
I like that you touched on coaching too. My response and agreement with that statement would be thus: what, you are saying a team that gets 3 technical fouls, in a game they aren't even competing in, aren't well coached? Again... shocked 😂
I wish inside the NBA was more prominent, to be honest, and I thinnk ESPN have sh** the bed on that, especially internationally. Because LA really need dunking on weekly by Chuck and the gang. It is a comedy team from top to bottom.
Oh, and a little more JT 'news'...
Mazzulla being intentionally vague because he can 😅 at this point I think they just want the league guessing and they probably know one way or the other what the plan is. I half expect the Injury Report to go from 'Out' to 'Available' with like half an hour notice on the day it is happening, if that is legal 😅
