Anyone watching NYG v Cowboys? I've been watching the Lions dominate their game but the clips they have shown of the other game has convinced me I've got to check out the hour highlights of that game tomorrow.

Looking forward to, and nervous about, the Superbowl replay shortly. I think the Eagles are likely to get the win again. I hope I'm wrong or it's a much closer game at least.

@BearsEatBeets
I was watching RedZone so saw pretty much all the action from the NY-Dallas game. I don't think Russell Wilson deserved to lose that game. Same, hoping the Chiefs can get some revenge but not a great start for them so far.

And glad the Lions looked like the Lions again.

Properly fully following the Red Sox this season (been checking in for a good few years now) has been a hell of a rollercoaster and also atrocious for my sleep schedule. It’s all pretty much falling apart but as long as there’s the wildcard there’s a shot. The good thing about not being American is having zero geographical necessity to support teams in the same town too, although I do have family outside Boston. I mean, I’m a Broncos fan because of an old Madden game and then I followed the Nuggets because I got drafted by them in 2K17. They got good though so I felt like a glory hunter and then got drafted by the Thunder in 2K22 only for them to also instantly get good too. Maybe I’m just good luck specifically in basketball.

I don't I've seen 2 blocked field goals in a row before. What happened to the Rams offensive line? Shocking end.

Was the Giants game always a trap game? Or is this just what happens when Herbo loses his three best offensive linemen against that Giants great DLine? Either way, it feels awful. Both losing in the short term to a team they should have beaten, but also long term the outlook of the season feels kinda grim if even for a month Herbert is playing without Slater, Alt and Becton. It is funny cause I let myself be confident in my team going into this Sunday more than I'd allowed myself to be in a long time, and I immediately paid the price.

I think it's safe to say I haven't got into the NFL this year, once again. I just never get round to watching any games live, and I don't care enough to seek news and highlights at the moment.

The NBA is back soon, at least. And I checked out a bit of the Celtocs Pre Season loss last night, and despite it being pre-season and despite it being a bunch of lesser players trying to make it in the league, Joe Mazzulla was coaching like it was the NBA finals, and I remembered why I love the game and his specific brand of psychotic intensity 😂

Josh Minott looks like a good find. He has something about him. Boucher seems to fit in well. The center situation will be interesting to see develop, i'm not sure which of the centers will fit in with the main team and stars so I have no idea who will get the start this season. I liked Queta last season (as a third option) at times, but he is sometimes not in control of his limbs, and is a little slow getting out of screens. Garza seems like the best screener on the team, but is also pretty clumsy offensively.

It is going to be a very strange season, but i' here for it.

Also, Tatum has been dunking in practice!? He snapped his damn achillies not that long ago. He is a f***ing machine.

@Ravix Pretty crazy opening night for the NBA. I’m pumped for it all to start and the games did not disappoint. Lakers-Warriors is going to be a good rivalry this year. First impressions are the Warriors are a more balanced and better team. They were able to win without Steph going off. And yet Luka putting up crazy numbers and still not enough to win. Once LeBron comes back things may change some, but I think the Lakers are still a couple players away from being truly a championship team. We’ll see.

The Houston-OKC rivalry is also going to hot this year. Durant is public enemy #1 in Oklahoma after leaving to join Golden State a few years ago and he was greeted with a chorus of boos from the crowd who once cheered him. A double overtime thriller though shows just how good Houston can be this year though because in my mind OKC is still the class of the league and are the champs until someone dethrones them. When Jalen Williams comes back they’ll be even better. Still, you have to think that Houston is just starting to get warmed up and accustomed to how they are going to play with KD. Expect them to improve as the season goes on (provided KD doesn’t go down with major injury, which there’s a high chance of that…)

More awesome games tonight. The NBA really did a good job of making opening games feel like rivalry games. Dallas-San Antonio feels like two teams who will be in a slug-fest all year vying for the last play-off spots. And of course Cleveland-NY is likely to be your #1 and #2 seeds for the East at the end of the year. Even Boston-Phili is likely to be a good game as both teams are still good but have so many questions. As you say, Mazzulla is going to be like a mad scientist in the lab trying to make this roster into a contender without their best player and having lost major pieces (Porzingis, Holiday, Horford). Lack of frontcourt depth is going to be their issue, as Brown, White, Pritchard, and Simmons will pour it in from the perimeter and drive but they seem frighteningly thin at center. Mazzulla has apparently been training them to just make the games a track meet and try to outrun the competition. 😅

My “way too early to be meaningful” pre-season pick is OKC vs NYC in the finals, with OKC hoisting the trophy again. Denver and Houston will be knocking right at the door though, along with Cleveland for the East. Sleeper teams in the West are San Antonio and Dallas and in the East are Philadelphia and Atlanta.

What do you think?

@Th3solution good write-up. Again, I haven't watched any of the opening games, but I shall be watching Boston v Phili tonight.

Did Big Al (Horford) make his Golden State debut? 😢😢 he is a born winner and leader, so will surely add to their locker room of leaders and winners. They should be tough in knock out games, close games etc, you'd expect. Were there signs of that last night, perhaps?

Assuming Ime Udoka is still at Houston, and they will be building on their pretty rapid rise. He's a top coach who only left Boston because of breaching club rules relating to... intimate relations with other staff (cheating on his wife)... so he was already in his coaching prime ready to compete year on year, so it isn't surprising seeing them achieve.

It will be interesting to see Bos v Phi tonight, i'm thinking Embiid is finally back after last year's debacle? And our tactic is usually let just him alone score. But i'd quite like to see Queta thrown in the deepend and told to stop him. The gameplan vs Phili should definitely be to run and run and run, to wear him down and out of the game. But there's a good chance they could blow us out if he's 'back back' and we haven't yet figured our best 5. Mazzulla was apparently aiming for fast play, but i've yet to see it actually be fast, more just a bit faster than the slowness of last year.

I'll maybe make predictions when i've atleast absorbed some of the leagues news tonight via commentary based chit chat.

@Ravix Yes, Horford was a contributor last night, hit one three and put in a few more points and rebounds. I do think the Warriors are more well-balanced now and have a lot of veteran experience and leadership so I suspect will be even tougher in the playoffs.

And yes, Udoka is still at Houston and I think people say that he’s really going to be a candidate for Coach of the year. We shall see. Way too early to predict that.

Phili should be really good on paper if they are indeed healthy, especially Embiid. But Maxey and George are also really competent scorers (George still hurt though, I think?) and that team could be a handful and they have that rookie phenom Edgecombe

Ravix

@Th3solution nice. Will you be watching any tonight? I imagine NY v CLE is the game to watch, but maybe you should check out some BOS v PHI for the heck of it. And you already know to look out for Minott and Boucher of the new crew. Even if the big games don't end up close this season, there's plenty of interest to see how Mazzulla fits everyone in. And tbh i'd watch him coach any game at this point (he recently made the Boston media play himself and the Celtics coaches, and they won something like 54-4 😂) Psycho Joe is just pure box office. And you know he'll be pissed they gave up those 4 points, haha.

I'll also say, i'm not sure how good Anfernee Simons will be for Boston, but sometimes he looks like a mini Dame Lillard, the way he moves and shoots can be pretty similar. But there is still a chance he gets lost in the wake of all that is the Celtics. Hope he shows out, though.

@Ravix Yeah, I’ll be bouncing around the games. Probably will take in some from Cle-NY, Bos-Phi, and SA-Dal. Curious to see the Clippers too, since that seems to be a house of cards over there. 😅

@Th3solution good call on Edgecombe. Eye-test says he is going to be special (or already is!) A joy to watch. Hard to believe he was the rookie out there.

And as for stats, he's broken various debut records of LeBron and A.I, and scored the third most points by a debuting rookie all time, the best in ~70 years

Good game. Dissapointing result, but good to see it was competitive. Celtics missed too many open looks first half, way too many. But Maxey went in to overdrive for a few minutes in the 4th. Those were the differences, really.

. @Ravix Yeah, Edge seems like the real deal. I didn’t get to see any of the Boston-Phili game, but watched a lot of the NY-Cle game. Cavs tried to make a game of it and it got close for a while but NYC never let it get out of control. I still think they could end up the best team in the East, we’ll see. And I caught some of Spurs-Mavs and wow, Wembayama is out of this world. He’s absolutely unguardable and the only thing that will keep him from being one of the league’s best is his own health. There’s no one like him. Maybe a dark horse candidate for MVP. All those tall skinny guys end up hurt a lot though, like our buddy Porzingis. 😛
When San Antonio gets back DeAaron Fox, they are really going to be serious contenders, I feel.

Also, I was on the right track with the train wreck that is the LA Clippers. And mediocre Jazz team just smashed them.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Ravix

@Th3solution I wish I could see more Wemby, Spurs would be a good second team to watch, but they run on western schedules a lot so it is way too late. Good to hear he has come back from his health issues and is continuing his strides forward, though.

I still remember his dunk over Derrick White and subsequent reaction to that. He basically just held the ball up like a bully with someone's lunchbox. Absolutely unguardable and D White was like "well... I tried to get back...but then...yeah" 🤷‍♂️ there is literally nothing that can be done when he gets going 😂

Also some NBA players, coaches and Mafia have been arrested today. So that's some news, I guess. Hard to take anything the FBI do seriously now, mind. But hopefully it doesn't impede on the season too much and it isn't a widespread issue.

Also they finally found out what was up with KP. It wasn't his lungs, but his heart. Some condition that meant he'd get instantly wrecked when he was oriented vertically, so he literally had to stay lying down.

@Ravix My lands, that whole arrest things is pretty crazy. Tampering, insider betting, and throwing games…. Not what the association needs. The NBA has already gone through a lot of criticism over the years for tampering. I forgot the name of that official that was imprisoned a few years ago for rigging games and gambling. Not a good look, but like you say, what’s even real anymore? People are being imprisoned and arrested on fake charges and for political purposes all the time.

A couple of stellar overtime games last night. SGA picking up where he left off last year. And Steph still being Steph.

That’s interesting about KP too. He seems to have made a full recovery, but if it’s a heart thing it does make you wonder if it will be a recurring issue.

I've never been into NBA but just learnt that Prime is going to be showing some games so I might at least give a game a try.

I've been quite enjoying the NFL season so far. The Bronco's 4th quarter comeback was quite crazy.

@BearsEatBeets Boston will be the Prime game tonight, I think. So there you go. You can watch a team in a transition phase vs the East favourite Nicks tonight. And any questions about how NYC managed to throw it away against the underdog Celtics, I can help you out with tomorrow 😁

Nah, it is going to be a messy season, but I can't help but recommend watch any game Joe Mazzulla is coaching. He is a genuine sports based psychopath.

@Th3solution I can't remember if I mentioned it to you in pre season, but Joe had been instantly subbing players who gave up offensive rebounds, regardless of if you had been on the court for 8 minutes or 8 seconds. And he managed to do this a few times in the first regular season game too. It is unprecedented, but drives the point across to never lapse in concentration. One less offensive rebound given up last game and the Celtics might have won, the margins really are that slim when you're missing players and rebuilding.

The Porzingis thing was called POTS, but I haven't looked into it. Maybe it was due to the initial infection he had, that or it is a continual problem that they can possibly manage and treat with certain medication and routines, but i'm not sure.

The gambling thing is kind of ironic when they will cut to adverts of Blake Griffin gambling, and insert all the odds and betting trends into the actual broadcasts. Honestly, i'd just tell them to get it the F out of the game broadcasts, but the money must be massive for the networks and NBA itself. The amount of obscure nonsense you can bet on doesn't help, either.

I wanted to mention Queta did have a good game as starting center, but fouled out by the end, and that kind of killed the momentum, as he was on a scoring run that was sapping the opponents energy, made a few good cuts for dunks in a row, and dunks are a good way to make a team feel inadequate defensively. Still needs to learn to be less clumsy with his body and foul less. But good signs he is stepping up. Garza got a concussion too, which didn't help the situation, as we were down 2 centers at the end. Definitely need Queta to play smarter in that instance.

Boucher was a bit quiet as power forward who can potentially play a bit of stretch big. Maybe he is the type of player who lacks true consistency, but can show up big at times. We will have to see how he plays tonight. Not sure how much you've seen of him previously. By all accounts he is a sound guy with a good story of how he got to the league though, so I do hope he fits in.

By the way, do we know who the amazon announce team is? Is it a full unique table of their comms, or it is using commentary from a national TV station? I usually watch the NBC Boston local broadcast via league pass, but if it is like when they had games on TNT then NBC have the night off and whoever does the broadcast for the national games take the spot. But I don't think Amazon took over for TNT, that was ESPN/ABC 🤷‍♂️

@Ravix I’m not sure about the Amazon team. The Amazon NFL team is unique to Amazon, so I assume the NBA games will have their own people too, rather than just broadcasting from another station’s personnel. Honestly I’m not sure though.

But yeah, it was weird to see Charles Barkley, Shaq, Kenny Smith all on ESPN instead of TNT.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Ravix

@Th3solution oooh, I forgot to check out Inside the NBA first show.

I think amazon and NBC are like a joint venture with their bid and probably share production teams with seperate announce teams.

Amazon got Harlan and Eagle, NBC Mike Tirico(sp?), so all top level. I like Mike Tirico even if I'm not confident how to spell his name. And Harlan and Eagle are pretty much synonymous with the NBA. Wiki says Brian Scalabrine has a role for the national NBC show too, as well as being Boston colour commentator/analyst 🙌

And weirdly, Blake Griffin, gambling advert savant, is now a studio analyst for Amazon, it seems.

I think the amazon studio show is going to be super boring, though 😬 Boston's NBC team are better, and they aren't even national broadcasters, they balance both jovial and clued in opinions and analysis, and have people that frame things for both casual viewers and hardcore basketball fans, which is what all shows should aim for tbh.

And obviously 'Inside' is its own monster, basically a light entertainment show in its own right.

@Th3solution Luka going to be MVP, right? There's one prediction done. (The league has made it harder to defend in the OKC style this year, judging by early signs, which may help Luka, too. Rules have shifted towards fouls being called on handsy defence)

And in the Celtics-sphere:
Last game Hugo Gonzalez made his debut (drafted from Real Madrid) and we matched him up against Jalen Brunson where he was the stand out who gave the team some actual momentum in a game that we lacked a little something in that regard. Tonight he earned a start and we are now matching his minutes/sub patterns with Cade Cunningham. So cool to see a 19 year old being given this responsibility so soon. He is quick becoming a personal favourites as he plays with real intensity and defensive effort.

These are the kind of things that will keep me locked in during a tougher season 😁

Can't rebound. 30 points from 18 offensive rebounds. Tough, tough season, indeed. Might have won 2 of the 3 if we could rebound the ball though 😅
