@graymamba
I was actually trying to be clever/funny.
But yes I did hear openai bought 40% of the RAM supply.

Anyway Trading Places is a cracking Xmas film

@CaptD nah I got you (& yes Trading Places is awesome)… I just wanted to use “RAMageddon” in the wild 😁

I just found out about the whole RAM situation and, whew, those price increases are absolutely insane! I looked at the RAM that I currently have in my gaming PC, and it's gone up in price by about €200 in just two months. I've never been more glad that I splurged for the 32 GB instead of 16 GB back in the day. Suddenly seems like a decision of great foresight! It's almost to the point where RAM is getting more expensive than the graphics card. Crazy.

@graymamba And RAMageddon is a great pun. I'm stealing that and giving no credit whatsoever.

So Valve have finally made a statement about the issues people have had this last couple of weeks when trying to buy a Steam Deck. RAMageddon, together with the increasing price of storage has meant that they simply can’t afford to produce them anymore… or at least until the price of the components effected return to normalcy. Needless to say, this will also have a massive impact on the Steam Machine too… maybe rendering the project another bust (after the last proposed Steam Machine from a decade or so back also floundered):

https://www.eurogamer.net/valve-blames-dwindling-steam-deck-s...

Obviously the issue is-impacting/will-impact Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft too… but probably not to the same extent due to what you’d assume to be the volume of their respective orders.

@graymamba Looks like valve shot themselves in the foot and then got shot in the foot before this thing even had a chance to launch. How they shot themselves in the foot- as a console only gamer since intellivision all i ever heard from PC players is that its a superior place to play 3rd party games. I won't deny, the thought of playing cyberpunk 2077 in all its glory on an expensive rig must be amazing. But I would never put all that $$$ into a prebuilt PC rig and I'm obv not schooled in building one. So Valve making a box that sits under my LG oled and that is no nonsense like a console, would have me giving Valve my credit card on launch day.

The reason that this thing doesn't exist to me and I'm not even paying attention anymore, is a machine that was already gonna be pricey as hell way before the RAM probs and only has the performance of a base ps5 will not convert me and prob won't convert many other console gamers either. Why isn't this a "PC master race, we'll show you how great PC gaming can be, but we'll put it in console form for you" ??? only 8gigs of freaking VRAM? who is this for? Its essentially just another current gen console that won't have the playstation exclusives. For $800 to $1,000 is what most are guessing. Current gen is 5yrs old now, why do we need a current gen console to enter the race 5yrs late with no advantages for 3rd party games and no real AAA exclusives? So they shot themselves in the foot by making this thing so underpowered.

Then got shot in the foot by this RAM issue happening before they can release. So as you said, this thing may and prob will be DOA when it eventually comes out. I'm perfectly fine with my ps5pro, dropping all the $$$$ on that. Give me a PC/console hybrid that can give me the ultra PC graphics settings and then they will have my $$$$.

Apparently Sony are shutting down Bluepoint. Pretty devastated tbh, they may've only made remasters/remakes but I’ve played most if not all of them… and enjoyed every one.

Well, this thread seems apt, @graymamba 🤯

I was simply enjoying the British curling victory tonight, and afterwards thought "I know, i'll check out what is happening with the good folk @ Push Square"

Apparently the apocalypse. The apocalypse is happening right now. I missed all the reactions live, but I am just as shocked as 99% of people on here.

What a crazy way to end the day.

When your live service plans go to sh**, and you force your single player studios to help with that push, but then cancel them all anyway, and then shut them down. How does that even make sense. Literally firing (or breaking up) the people least responsible for your financial f*** ups 🤦‍♂️

  • That was me with the figure skating, I looked the first time and didn't realize what I was reading until I double checked and there it was. I saw Demon's Souls/Bluepoint and thought 'this is it, they announced a Bloodborne Remaster'. Far from it. Sony are making it much easier for me to stick with Indies, especially when they are costing people jobs. Seventy more people out of work.

These violent delights have violent ends & in their triumph die, like fire & powder Which, as they kiss, consume.

@Ravix yes so… on top of the curling, which the missus and I have been thoroughly enjoying… this treatment of Bluepoint since its purchase has been an absolute travesty!

From a personal perspective, I was always a guy who loved gaming… from the spectrum, c64, Megadrive etc. but buy the time the PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 (I owned them all btw… just didn’t do much with them) came around I was too busy chasing skirt, scoring substances and ****ing my cash up against the wall. BUT once I’d got all that ‘unpleasantness’ out of my system 😋… I went right back to gaming to occupy my time and it was the Bluepoint remasters of untold classic games and series’ that enabled me to not only enjoy what I’d missed… but enjoy the best version of.

Sony has an untold amount of IP that they’re doing nothing with right now… and they choose to close the premier studio that could do something with those sleeping-giants. I’m incredibly angry… why the **** they didn’t close Haven instead and give Bluepoint a little sumn’-sumn’ I just do not know. As I said in one of my group chats… Ryan and Hulst may as well be regular fixtures in the Epstein files at this point in regards to how I feel about them. That is obviously is probably both a bit crude and overblown… but I’m really ****ed off tbh.

Hopefully they can rise from the ashes and form an independent company again.
It amazes me that Sony would make this decision as there are so many ports/remasters that gamers are crying out for (PSVR1 ports for a start), that is assuming they were okay continuing remasters as I know a few press articles did mention that they wanted to develop their own game.
Btw I was reminded tonight that they did the Titanfall port for the xbox 360 back in the day, that was lauded as a masterpiece of port and all their games had very high Metacritic ratings (of course they are remasters but still).

Crazy and bewildering, it reminds me of Evolution Studios and what a misstep that was especially when you consider that Forza was a best selling game last year.
Still I’m sure Fairgames and Horizon gathering will make a ROI.

Ravix

@graymamba I don't blame you (for either part 😛) but mostly i'm talking about the extreme reaction. It is totally fair, it is good to be passionate about things you like and pissed off at those ruining those things to save their own asses.

But honestly, it is like the industry collectively lost its minds (I don't know exactly how long ago) reaching for this something they dont even know how to handle and forgetting that people still just like normal f***ing games.

I don't know how long i've been a proper 'gamer', probably since about 2018, but even then it took a few really good games to move me away from being a total casual, and even then i'm still a little fast and loose with it. But the last few years i've been kind of keeping up with gaming news as I game more, and it truly makes me like the hobby less. It is frustrating to see something you started to really like being f***ing destroyed by sheer idiocy.

They have seriously poisoned their own waterhole.

I mean, they even tried this sh** with Naughty Dog, right? And they let Bungie get involved in that. I have made it known a few times I think that Bungie and those that were leading it (and those that spun off from it who just happened to be the people that convinced Hermen that Concord was a gold dust 🤦‍♂️) are basically a cancer of gaming that have influenced SIE far too much with their push for live service. Their attitude was foul in the way they managed, how they shifted blame, in some of the things they said. And in their arguments about why they should be trusted they used the same kind of psychology that an abusive partner uses. From that alone it was so easy to tell the type of people that were involved there. And these people were 100% in the ears of Jim and Hermen telling them how it will all work out if they just follow their lead and execute this live service plan.

So yeah, vent away! It's definitely cathartic!

I think imagining Hulst and Ryan as cuckholded, betas kind of works, too 😁 So maybe they would be the kind that use money and influence to visit islands and attend parties with other sick weakminded fu**s to feel more powerful. Why not? You aren't saying they did, or that it amounts to the same thing, just that there are similar feelings when you're pissed off at these type of corpos.

You know, even though I thought Marathon looked not too bad (for what it is) I kind of hope it bombs now. Maybe then we can finally move away from this utter sh**e that ruining the industry. I know they kicked a bunch of people out of Bungie, but it is too late, the damage has long been done with this saga throughout the whole of SIE and the effects just get worse and worse as they keep digging a deeper hole for themselves. The only issue with that is; once Marathon doesn't meet expectations, some other poor dev will suffer and the cycle continues. And Fairgame$ after that, I suppose.

@GirlVersusGame yep. To say it was the opposite type of news you were expecting is almost not going far enough!

But hey, winter sports are cool at least. Let us all just turn back time and pretend everything is okay within the gaming industry as we rock back and forth on the floor 😁

The f***ing AI news on top of it, too. Government's need to shut that sh** down asap.

Today is really making me wish i'd took the plunge and tried to understand PC ownership and maintainance, as I was put off going all in on a high-end rig by thinking i'd just mess it up and end up not using it much, essentially 😭 and now assembling a top end gaming rig is probably the price of an apartment in London Town 😂 but at least it might be the only place any half decent games that want to push the medium foreard will end up as no one can put out a new console anyway 😂

What a hobby 🤦‍♂️

@Ravix @CaptD @graymamba
Bluepoint was a studio with only 70 people. What sense did this make when they are saying its because of "cutbacks from rising cost and challenges in today's industry"....???? How much can they possibly be saving cutting a studio with only 70peeps, when they are freakin' Sony and have been dominating the console space for 12years and 2 gens in a row now????

This is all strange. I wouldn't be surprised if a later report comes out from a bluepoint dev saying Sony wanted to force them to make something they did not want to, like a diff live service game not set in the GOW IP and Bluepoint was resistant. So Sony cut them loose.

@wittedbugle don’t get me wrong… I haven’t mentioned it but I’m well aware of the upcoming transtion that Sony will somehow try to traverse. They’re in a real tough spot as far as the future of gaming goes I agree.

But being well aware of that… closing Bluepoint still seems like a total brain-dead reactionary move to quickly square-off some earnings. They’re a small dev team (70 peeps) so the upkeep is minimal (or as minimal as these things get at this level). They’re the best in the game at remakes/remasters and there is an absolute wealth of first party properties to remake/remaster right now! Not only that… they’ve just announced maybe the biggest remake project ever (it’s up there atleast)… let them deal with that and Santa Monica can work on new ****! Every way I slice it… and I’ve sliced the **** out of it I can assure you, there are different moves that could be made… and more earnings to be made by alternate cuts (Haven etc.).

Then apart from that, theres the support Bluepoint can provide. In this age of the big Sony first parties taking 6 years to make a game, they’re almost always contracting stuff out to various sub-dev units. Bluepoint did this to an elite level on Ragnarok… and while it wouldn’t be their ideal, I’m sure that job security would mean that they’d be happy to fulfill that on future projects to speed up the dev time.

Worst decision I’ve ever seen!
