Finished the game this weekend. 18 hours 31 minutes was my final time played on the stat counter at the end, that was a through back to the 90's indeed! I enjoyed reading through all my stats, to my surprise I only died once, I knew it wasn't many but I thought more than 1 lol I also dodged 1,866 times, I pressed O a lot 😂

@LtSarge overall games brilliant, I got the Leave ending which by the trophy count is the most popular/common to get. Really enjoyed the psychological horror in the game.

The game length was probably longer than I would of liked but I guess that's just subjective, gamers with an abundance of time will probably want it to be longer lol

I am looking forward to trying Silent Hill f and the new one but it will be a while before I do get to them

@MaulTsir Congrats on finishing SH2. I haven’t made any progress to speak of since I’m tied up with real world duties. I’m itching to get back to it, hopefully later this week.

@Th3solution Thanks! Ah then pesky real life duties don't half know how to get in the way of a good game!

Hope you find the time to relax and enjoy the rest of the game, it's brilliant overall and I'm really glad I played it

I've been playing this since Christmas 2024, I find it a bit too stressful haha. It's really good, though. I just got the rifle the other night. My save file is around 18 hours, I have taken it slowly and enjoying the vibes but I would like to get it wrapped up. Can't have much left..?

@kyleforrester87 I’m about where you are now— just got the rifle. Also similar save file time, sitting around 18 hrs, although my PS5’s counter says 20 hours, likely from some time spent paused and doing a couple reloads. The menu says I’m 66% complete, so I don’t think we’re actually that close to the end after all. 😅 I’m not sure how @MaulTsir and @LtSarge finished quite so fast, but at this pace I’ll probably not get to the end until at least 25 hours.

Having finished the hospital and now in the prison, it is nice to get a different setting, although I felt the alternate hospital otherworld version was unique enough that I didn’t find it too repetitive. It seemed quite a bit shorter also, with fewer puzzles and locked doors to open, so I made it through that and the outdoor section of the town fairly quickly. The prison section ramps up the difficulty too, with new enemy types and I’m starting to burn through all the ammo I’ve been stockpiling. I still have about 80 handgun and 40 shotgun shells and about 10 rifle rounds. For me, I like the exploration and searching for things more than the combat, so I’m not sure I’ll like the prison as much as the hospital, but we’ll see. These spider enemies are getting on my nerves. 😅

kyleforrester87

@Th3solution how have you got all that ammo 😂 I have about 20 handgun rounds and a handful of shotgun and rifle bullets. Obviously I am a rubbish aim!!

@kyleforrester87 Those dastardly spider mannequins are tough to hit. I’m no good at shooting either. 😅 But I am playing on easy combat (but normal puzzles) so I’m sure it takes fewer shots to drop one of them.

kyleforrester87

@Th3solution ohhh okay, that makes sense. I was assuming you were relying on bashing enemies more than I was. Yeah, I would not say I am swimming in ammo on normal but it’s not too bad. I actually have about 30 med kits (between small/large) so it often makes sense for me to get in close and hit things and take the inevitable damage than use ammo 🫣

Anyway, it’s stressing me out, I just want it over now 😂😂 brilliant game, though…

@kyleforrester87 Easy mode for combat takes a little of the edge off the scariness and stress for me. Poor James can take several hits before going down, so there’s not as much white-knuckling of the DualSense from fear of death. Most of my horror games I play on easy if I can. I enjoy them so much more that way. They’re still scary, but not dreadfully so. If the stress gets too high you should crank it down!

@LtSarge I haven't played the remake, but from the short clips I've seen they have made the "introduction" sequence that gets you the plank much more complex. I can only imagine many more sequences have been protracted in a similar fashion. It could also be that the more complicated engine/level design just makes you spend more time in it looking around and doing things. It also seems that combat is more in-depth and might take longer, but without experiencing it that is a very third-hand opinion. I do wonder how hard it is to avoid monsters in the remake. In the original, many times you can just skip around enemies as they can't follow you through doors.

@Th3solution the one thing that gets me about this game is there is just no way James would be pressing on in his situation, he’d have blown his own brains out long ago. Or I would have, anyway. You can say the same about most survival horror games I guess but everything is just so bloody hopeless and horrible in Silent Hill 😂

@Th3solution @kyleforrester87 Sounds like your both still enjoying the game, even if it is giving you horror anxiety 😂 it's all part of the fun!! Lol

In terms if Ammo is played on Normal difficulty and when I got to the prison section, I had a lot of ammo left, I had been doing a lot of the combat with my pipe though, but at the prison section I just let loose, for the rest of the game I was just blasting everything that moved.

Hope you both manage to see it through, it has became one of my favourite horror experiences, I love Resident Evil, I grew up on them but in terms of psychological horror this is up there with the best.

@LtSarge @DemonStar89 I did a little digging after I finished the game, I was very curious after we talked about the game being almost double in length to the original as to what made it so much longer. The story seems to be exactly the same, nothing extra seems to be added but the levels themselves must be longer, it's all I can think of

@kyleforrester87 I actually couldn't believe how calm James was when I first started the game, he just walks around like everything's normal 😂

@kyleforrester87 @MaulTsir I’ve definitely had to suspend disbelief about James’s whole demeanor and reactions. Yeah, he’s seeing some really crazy stuff in Silent Hill and he has yet to really show any real fear or significant emotion. It’s like he’s just strolling through this nightmare like it’s a day at the office. Most of us would be babbling and cowering in a corner after 5 minutes in that town.

I found it funny how he’s been slaughtering all these creepy humanoid creatures and under constant attack around every corner, shooting or pummeling anything that moves into a bloody pulp, but when he runs into Eddie at that first prison area holding a gun next to a dead body he gets all concerned and judgmental that Eddie may have lost his nerve and shot someone. My initial reaction would had been, “Oh you must have shot one of many hundreds of aggressive creepy humanoid creatures trying to kill us. Good job, man.” But instead he’s looking at Eddie like he’s some kind of horrible person. 😂

Maria has been a weird one too. We’re in the middle of the friggin’ apocalypse walking through a living night terror and she wants to just keep hitting on me? 😂
I think Angela is having the most appropriate emotional reaction so far. She seems to be really struggling! 😅
It may all eventually make sense why these people are so messed up. But I have to chuckle at the situation. And I am still loving the game, stilted personalities and all.

kyleforrester87

@Th3solution @MaulTsir yeah, I guess his overall demeanour leans into the Twin Peaks dream like vibe. He does seem to be observing events more than participating. I have not finished it yet and have some how avoided spoilers over the years, but I think I know where it is going, in which case his behaviour might make at least a bit more sense.

I think this sums up James pretty well, which is shown in his first interaction with Angela:

I finally completed the game. Save file was a bit over 25 hours. Really a fantastic game overall. It has its issues, but as far as survival horror I’ll start by saying it’s right up there close to RE2 Remake for me, but not quite. Maybe around to the level of RE4 Remake in my personal preference list, although hard to compare since they each have their strengths and differences.

Overall, the best part of SH2 is the setting, the mood, and the art design. It’s just a creepy, scary, and yet beautiful game. The use of light and dark is very effective, and of course the fog. But beyond that, the shapes and design of the set pieces from the walls to the items and furniture was all so well done. There’s so many times that I thought I saw an enemy in the shadows but it was just a twisted piece of metal or a lamp or something that was clearly designed to catch your eye and give you a double take as you’re gripping your controller ready to strike.

The other strength of the game was in the design of the levels and puzzles. The map is excellent and keeps you focused on the linear path through each area, but yet allows for you to tackle it at your own pace and explore at your will. Much of the game I just ran around and tried to look everywhere and open every door, but if I occasionally was a bit lost I’d pull up the map and inevitably James would have made notes on the map showing where I’d been, which doors had locks, where a puzzle was located, and where a clue would be found based on some scrap of paper I’d read or something. It was always easy to figure out where I should go next. The puzzles themselves were usually just the right level of difficulty, although a couple of them were tough enough so that I had to look something up. Almost all of them I was able to figure out on my own though.

The narrative was a mixed bag. By the end, when things come together, it really is quite brilliant. Once I started to see where things might be going as far as what’s going on in Silent Hill and who these people are, then a lot of what I’d been experiencing made a lot more sense. I look back on my comments about James, Maria, Eddie, and Angela, and now at the end I totally have a different perspective. Quite a fascinating tale and has really made me ponder. I’ll refrain from getting into theories so as to avoid spoilers. I say it’s “mixed” though because I still feel like the dialogue and voice acting is rather stiff and borders on unauthentic or illogical at times, but most of it all makes sense in the end.

Combat was good enough, nothing spectacular but had enough depth to keep my attention throughout. The bosses and enemy designs were really great. One complaint I’d read was the lack of enemy variety, but personally that never bothered me. The final two bosses were definitely the toughest, but I’d stockpiled so much ammo and health items that I made it through both fine.

Speaking of endings, I got the most common one first “Leave”, and then reloaded my last save and did a little save scumming to get the other two main endings that don’t require NG+. There’s definitely one ending that is “happier” than the others, but each one has a distinct wrinkle with the background narrative and how James might react. Great stuff.

Playing SH2 has definitely piqued my interest for the series. I think I might try SHf at some point, which I’m surprised to say. I didn’t think it would be a game that would interest me, but now I feel like I want to see more of the series.
