@GirlVersusGame the “There was a hole here” drove me mad when I first played it, there are so many holes in the game, ones you jump into, ones James puts his hand into. I just found this article though: https://www.thegamer.com/silent-hill-2-there-was-hole-here-go...

Yeah, the town feels a lot smaller because you can’t go into buildings, I guess it was down to DVD capacity, but it also makes that area feel more oppressive. You can mostly only travel on the road, barely being able to see in front of you because of the fog. So it kind of works in its favour. I think you’re right about certain areas outstaying their welcome, like the maze, but the expanded town really does add to it.

The entrance to the apartment is a second gate in a chain link fence, which kind of looks just like the fence itself. The first gate you come to says it can’t be opened too, so I did a whole detour to try to find another entrance. I’m pretty sure I hit this problem every time though

I almost mentioned Evil Dead . Yeah, the chainsaw is a bit of a liability on the streets but it’s really useful in the apartment when they can only come at you one at a time.

That’s interesting about them reusing James’ model, but it makes sense, less meshes and textures to store on the disk. And yeah, I didn’t see James wash his hands after the toilet incident!

Just to clarify when I said the game play was smaller, you’ve got the two black bars of a 4 x 3 on a 16 x 9 screen, but within remaining area, there’s a centimetre boarder around where the game is actually shown. I could probably zoom it with the TV controls, but I got used to it so quickly.

I think the second time I played it on the PS2 back in the early 2000’s, I finished it in one sitting (it was something like 7.5 hours ) but it’s been a while and I think if you wanted to experience the PS2 version, maybe a non-commentary YouTube (or a very subtle commentary, not a “Hey Guys! Today we’re gonna play SILENT HILLLL!!! ).

That’s really interesting about Lilith’s symbol, I’ll keep an eye out for the crescent moon now too. I’ll usually spot planetary or astrological symbols (or Hebrew text), but that’s another layer deeper and it’s subtle.

I love talking about this kind of thing. I’m the kind of nerd that loves digging into the lore. Dark Souls is an especially good series for lore, I’d listen to a podcast called Bonfireside Chat about DS lore while playing it. I still think the original DS is the best of all of them. That’s more faux medieval/monsters/melee combat, but still has that deep atmosphere. Crow Country has the atmosphere too, and is about as close to a PS2 game on PS5 I’ve played.

Old enough to know better...

@WaveWitch After playing both SH2R and Cronos (criminally underrated) I have 100% faith in Bloober to deliver with Silent Hill 1 remake... all they need to do is not over extended every area by two hours 😅

172 platinums and counting...

Ya, i read that SH2R dragged a little here and there and tended to be overly bloated for it's own good with a couple of locations. Plus many have said that it doesn't quite have the same level of finesss, complexity in terms of combat, controls, puzzles, nor environmental diversity(Although this 100% plagued the crap out of the original SH1 vs RE1 on PS1) or the sheer calibur of quality of something like Resident Evil 2 Remake.

But to be fair, going up against Capcom Devision 1 is like going up against a god. lol
