@MightyDemon82 That's weird that they've never fixed it, but at least there's a solution.

I don't think I've ever played a Falcom game, but that will change when I get Ys VIII when the PS5 version comes out soon and I plan on trying out the series you are playing at some point too.

@Kairu A new pachinko machine for sure.

Hmmm…. So with recent news, I’m surprised to see current gen games releasing at 30 fps.

I’ve not been a frame rate snob, but I’m gradually growing accustomed to 60 fps. I don’t have a 120 hz or VRR capable display, so perhaps I’m more open to the lack of performance options coming out, but it is strange that we have older games performing better than games that are made for this generation.

In the case of Plague Tale, I suspect the issue is just the fact it’s AA, and in the case of Gotham Knights, it’s the fact the game is probably so big and complex with the multiplayer aspects that the hardware might struggle. I don’t know.

Is 30 fps a deal breaker for you? I’m undecided, but I must admit it takes the hype out of it for some of the current gen projects to hear this.

@Th3solution it's not a deal breaker for me personally. I played cyberpunk 2077 on my Series S for instance and hardly noticed it not running at 60 fps. It's mostly noticeable in fast paced games like racers and online shooters for instance and those i don't really play to be honest. I prefer a fixed 30 over some game that have fps dips. Like dipping from 60 to 30 back and forth on graphically intense parts of the game can make me nauseous sometimes, a problem, which i don't have when i'm on a fixed 30. So i won't skip a game when it's not 60 fps at launch, gameplay is much more important for me.

@Kairu I do think 30 fps is perfectly playable and depending on the game I have sometimes opted for the fidelity mode over the performance mode (I liked the performance RT mode of Insomniac’s games though), but I must admit - I jump over to the PS5 version with the higher frame rate when the option has been there.

When I’m on the fence about a game, any sort of current gen perks can entice me to play it (DualSense support, ray tracing, 60 fps). But like you said, for a game I’m really stoked for, lack of those features wouldn’t deter me from still playing it. However, tolerance for the lower frame rate is gradually becoming more and more rare amongst the gaming population, I think.

At least 60 fps has become a standard; looking at my backlog, it has very few games that don’t have a 60 fps option on PS5. Most older games have an update patch now (Bloodborne one of the notable exceptions) and nearly all new games come with it baked in from the start.

I suspect the backlash will prompt APT Requiem and Gotham Knights to try to get a patch eventually.

@Th3solution No, 30fps is fine for me and I'm not going not play a game just because it does not run at 60fps. I have played some games at 30fps since I've got my ps5, and it has been ok. I notice it more when playing at 60fps then switching to 30fps.

@Lavalera I do think it depends on the game, like you said. A high FR is less beneficial for non-action games.

I was actually surprised at the outcry when the PS1 retro games were being rumored to release in the 50 fps instead of 60. But I guess when the graphics are so poor, all you’ve got is frame rate to make it look better.

Th3solution

@JohnnyShoulder My approach has been to start a game at 30 / fidelity mode, then switch to performance later if I want to see what it plays like that way. Starting at 60 and trying to switch back to 30 is a lot harder to tolerate.
But lately I’m gradually just starting at 60, which is what I did to GT7, Immortals, and Avengers.

Thrillho

I’ve become a bit of a fps snob now. I never thought it would make such a difference but playing Yakuza 6 a while ago and it felt so jarring, particularly when spinning around quickly.

I can readjust to it but I’ll always take frame rate over resolution!

Bloober Team do worry me but that trailer was pretty glorious. Had to laugh at the people moaning about it being a ‘CGI trailer’ when it’s pretty clearly cutscenes from the game running in-engine as they’re 1/1 recreations of scenes from the original.

@Sable If you're in a country that has PlayStation Direct, that's probably a good place to keep an eye on. Either way it seems to be getting easier to get them so hopefully you won't have to look too long.

@Sable I hope you don't have too much difficulty in getting your hands on one. I don't think you will find any in shops just yet (although it wouldn't hurt to check at your local GAME for example), but they should be easier to find online.

So the Gotham Knights reviews are a little spicey. It never really appealed to me in all honesty but may have come out the oven even worse than I was expecting.

Lavalera

@colonelkilgore I'm still getting it despite the mixed reviews. From what i've seen in the previews, the gameplay footage and technical breakdown of the game, it seems exactly up my alley. I am really looking forward to play it tomorrow.

@Lavalera in fairness to it, there are some positive reviews out there… so some people will definitely enjoy it. It’s just way down on its forebears I suppose.

@colonelkilgore Absolutely. It's also a different studio. GK is being made by WB montreal which made arkham origins, which also had mixed reviews. The other Arkham games were made by Rocksteady, which is currently developing the Suicide Squad game. So i would expect that game to get more universal praise than Gotham Knights does, or at least i hope it will.
