lookin back at the topic's original first post, talking about the upcoming ps5 release, lot of people had pretty good guesses a few years ago about what the ps5 could handle. here we are a few years later, ps5 is out, i managed to get one though i had to pay a bit over msrp for it... and so far im impressed. i think the sweet spot for ps5 to showcase graphics AND effects like ray tracing and hdr would be games running at 60 frames and 1440p. several run 4k or "checkerboard" 4k, which, i dont like checkboard because graphics have fuzzy edges up close. but so far the games i've played like ratchet & clank, DS remaster, and many others, look fantastic. as the console ages we'll see devs get a good grip on the ps5's power and how to utilize it and pop out amazing games. i dont think ray tracing is necessary in every game, but when pulled off correctly, it looks great.

im thrilled if a game is 1440p, 60 frames, hdr! but i know the ps5 can do much more than this. digital foundry videos have been showing the ps5 pulling ahead frame-rate-wise in many gams as compared to the xbox series x. with the X having severe frame pacing issues or screen tearing in many games, both issues that havent been fixed or many games and its been a year now since the X also came out. dunno whats goin on there, but i'd guess slower ssd in the xbox is partially to blame.

The Nintendo Switch is the only console that predicts its own future... after 5 years of nothing but weaboo games, you're ready to switch to another console!

Just bought an LG C1 (2021 version) and omg the difference compared to my Samsung poor man's 4k with blag HDR. The C1 is legit, the picture is phenomenal. I now have a chance at Returnal as the lag is nonexistent now.

Such a difference.

@themcnoisy After so many opinions agreeing about it, I’m convinced it’s the perfect TV for consoles and I definitely wanna get one after I move to my new place.
Hopefully I’ll be able to afford it

@Voltan it's super heavy though Volt. Moving it from the backroom (after putting the stand on) to my living room was like trying to do the Atlas stones.

It's so strange. Everything about it after the 5 minutes set up is perfect. The colours, the HDR, the lack of lag, the picture is just boss. There is also a pseudo surround sound which is surprisingly good. I usually have my old jamo speakers set up in stereo which has worked great the last 7/8 years. Now I'm losing bass but gaining a better sound overall with the surround sound. May even buy a sound bar at some point.

Mines a 55inch. I wish I went one size bigger tbh as the TV is that good but couldn't warrant the additional moolah. It cost £1200 and the bigger one was £1550 or something from Curry's.

@themcnoisy I’d be probably mounting mine on a wall. Guess I might need help then
And yeah, I’m considering a bigger one but haven’t decided yet.

I find it a bit annoying that these new TVs are sooo huge. I think my old 2014 Bravia is about 36” and more than big enough for my living room. 55” wouldn’t even fit where I currently have my TV.

@Thrillho I used to think that until I got a bit bigger tv and managed to fit one in after shifting a few things round. I already had a bigger tv stand so my current tv snuggly fits on it, and my tv (49") is probably considered on the smaller side these days. I've found 4K HDR so much for gaming, tv and movies now I've got all the right equipment to experience it in full.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@Thrillho I went with a 40" 4K TV a few years ago because it was all I could fit in my current setup (interestingly, the actual TV size was pretty much the same as my previous 37" HD TV, despite the screen being bigger) but I'll have a much bigger living room next year. I'll need to see how big I actually need once I get there.

@Voltan Mine’s a 40 inch 4K Samsung at the minute. I really like the size but the backlight’s already dying, got big dim bands running vertical in two places. Really annoying as I only got it about 3 years ago.

@nessisonett Mine’s a cheap-a$$ Sharp Android TV, which I also got about 3 years ago (very end of 2018) - but honestly size was the deciding factor as I really couldn’t fit anything bigger, and only these cheap ones were available at the time It was like €300 new.
The one feature it has that I really dig is built in Chromecast, so I can easily stream stuff from my laptop or phone to the big screen without any additional devices. Definitely doesn’t have the best LCD panel ever though.

@Thrillho spot on, I moved in Feb and my new living room is big, it's long. But if I could use a smaller TV and be comfy gaming from any seat I would. It's just not practical.

Also prior to having the C1, the PS5 looked better on my old TV but now it really is next gen with full blown HDR and no lag. I nearly beat the Returnal first boss last night. So so close. Onto Returnal and it really helps getting lucky perks, I think it leans onto rng a tad too much.

@nessisonett could be the same one I had. It was alright and worked. But the lag and colours were all over the place. Switching over is something I should have done earlier. Playing on a gimped set up, especially on games like rocket League, is a recipe for mediocrity. Returnal looks amazing now and I can't wait to see the likes of Spiderman and Ratchet and Clank the way the artists intended.

@themcnoisy Now you're are making me think I might actually be better at some games than I think and it's the TV holding me back, not my "old" age 😂

@Voltan I guess I can't say too much though. It's not like I'm great at games either, but I still game a lot regardless.

I just got a Sony Bravia KD-50X85J and was really loving it but after a Firmware update yesterday, it's not letting me see my PS5 picture. It's a bit of a bummer so I'm hoping Sony support can help me out.

Also: today's YouTube app update finally added HDR support.

@Kidfried When I started gaming, I was gaming on a 14" 4:3 CRT. Playing Split screen was quite difficult... I upgraded over the years and by the time the N64 came out, I had a 28" widescreen CRT which was considered 'Large' by then. We'd all be sat on the floor about 3-4' away from the screen playing 4 player Splitscreen staring at our 'tiny' section (never looking at the other parts of the screen to get an idea where the others were LOL). By the time of the OG Xbox/PS2 era, I'd gone up to a 32" widescreen CRT TV but it was the 'next gen' that really killed off CRT's and 'Small' screens for me.

It was partly the Launch of the PS3 in the UK and Partly Sky HD - also a smaller part the 360 but my 'launch' edition didn't have HDMI or Bluray - that I upgraded to a 46" HD TV and the difference it made in gaming felt 'significant' - particularly in the MP's of that era. I felt like I had a distinct advantage at range as the size of the screen and better image clarity led to easier target acquisition. That 'tiny' little blob that you don't know if its an enemy or part of the environment suddenly is much bigger and the extra pixels helped to add detail and a bit more 'shape' to identify it.

I now have a 55" 4k HDR TV and sit about 8' away from the screen. I wouldn't go back to CRT - even if they could make a 55" display - It would take up half the room too.

Its funny to me that I used to be OK to play Goldeneye for example with 3 others, staring at a 'tiny' part of the screen on a 28" TV (that was bigger than a LOT had too) but now I find 2 player Split-screen on a 55" screen annoying and distracting. Even 4-player modes which still give a 'larger' screen to the player than many TV's I owned offered Full screen size are far too limiting.

So yes, I do feel screen size makes a difference and I wouldn't want to go 'smaller' in the future - more likely to go up in screen size...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
