Finally, after many attempts, I managed to secure a Game pre-order for a PS5 today, with Spiderman: Miles Morales and Assassins's Creed Valhalla. It's only been the PS2 and the PS5 that I haven't managed to purchase on launch day, but man this one was hard to get!

So, it'll be arriving next week sometime I believe - I haven't really had a chance to look through much on things to watch out for. Any newbie tips for when it arrives? I purchased quite a few of my games digitally on the PS4 so I'll need to go through and see which ones are backward compatible, plus I have managed to secure the last two months "free" PS Plus games into my library which will give me a couple more options.

Anything I should know for day 1 which will make life easier?

@RogerRoger Excellent news on the compatability - thanks! I'll definitely check out Astro's Playroom!

@professorhat congrats on finally securing a 5 after what sounds like much hard work to do so 👏. Enjoy buddy.

@Arugula thanks for this - looks like I'll be dusting off Destiny 2 again!

@colonelkilgore thanks - it's been luck really today. November / December / January I was really looking out for the notifications and doing my best, but I never even got close (including launch night when I was awake when pre-orders went live, but still missed out!).

I'd given up in recent months, resigned to having to wait potentially a year, but for some reason had the stock notifications on today and suddenly noticed the Game pre-order go live - it put me in a queue for an hour and when I got in, it said the bundle I'd chosen was out of stock. I tried a couple of others, all out of stock so I figured I'd missed it yet again. Then something made me choose one more bundle which included those two games and it added into my basket! It's more than I intended to spend including the 2 games, but they look to be decent games and at least I've not paid over the odds to a scalper

Congrats on the new console! The only suggestion I have is make sure you are downloading the PS5 version of a game if there is also a PS4 version available.

@professorhat it almost makes me feel guilty for how easily I pre-ordered mine. I missed all the shenanigans on the actual night it all went live as Sony initially stated that they would provide ample notice... so I just went to bed, totally oblivious to what was playing out across the interwebz.

Woke up the next morning and checked my regular gaming sites/channels and was quite shocked about how it all went down.

I was in the office and thought I’d take an early lunch and see if there was any chance at a preorder from a retail store, so I googled what time Currys/PC World opened and waited to stroll into the city centre. Walked straight past Game, which had an obscenely long queue... literally ‘around the block’, straight into Curry’s/PC World where I was the first Preorder they had. I guess no one even considered them a possibility... which was obviously very lucky for me.

@colonelkilgore No need to feel guilty, it really is a case of being in the right place at the right time!

@colonelkilgore I also got mine quite easily although I'm pretty sure it was significantly easier to get one here in Poland than in UK or USA or most of western Europe, I guess (which doesn't necessarily mean it was easy).
I just stayed up long after the Sony event long enough to see what happened with the US pre-orders (that weren't supposed to be live until the next morning) and waited a while longer to see if any of the Polish retailers would them up before opening hours. Sure enough, one did and I snagged mine within minutes

@professorhat Congrats and I hope it brings you as much fun as it did to me. Both games in your bundle are a great way to start too

Maybe a couple:

  • Check if any of your purchased PS4 games can be upgraded to the PS5 version but also keep in mind it's a separate trophy list if your a trophy hunter like myself
  • My only gripe with the PS5 is the controller battery off the charge goes down a lot quicker than the PS4 did so maybe invest in a charging dock, up to you
  • Also bunch of great PS4 games for free on that PS collection thing on the store
  • Hope you got the Physical disk version as well, RRP sucks man depending on where you are in the world lol buying physical versions of the game are always cheaper

Other than that have fun man, quick and quiet system and the controller is a beast.

Thanks for this - a charging dock seems like a good bet as it was useful for my PS4 controllers as well.

I did get the disc version mostly cos I like to have the choice, but I had moved to purely digital purchases on the PS4 (I just wait for the sales generally) so I'll probably do the same for most purchases as I prefer not to have to faff around changing discs!

Which reminds me, anyone got good tips on replacing the internal hard drive for a larger one. It was pretty much the first thing I did on the PS4 as space just gets filled so quickly!

@professorhat You can't replace the internal SSD in a PS5 - it's part of the motherboard. However, there is an internal slot for an additional one but it can't be used yet. Sony's supposed to publish a list of supported drives soon and enable the expansion slot via a firmware update.

Ah okay, thanks for the tip. Interesting they're using that approach this time - hopefully it will be seamless from the UI :S

@professorhat You can store games on an external USB drive, but you can only play PS4 games and not PS5 games from it. The new expansion drives are gonna be expensive, so these are a good cheaper alternative if you are looking after the pennies.

Well done on finally obtaining a PS5 and welcome to the next gen famalam!

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Thanks for the tip - looks like I need to dust off an old USB drive!
