Topic: Immortals Fenyx Rising and other PS4 - PS5 upgrades

Hi. I just got my PS5 hooked up. My kid moved his half completed I:FR game from the PS4 over to the PS5 and started playing. I really couldn't tell the difference. Maybe my TV isn't good enough, or the HDR is good enough on the PS4 version, but I legit thought he was still playing on the PS4. Anybody else play both versions of the game on different consoles? We have the PS4 Slim, not Pro, but I couldn't tell. Same tv.

Ratchet & Clank is a whole other story, that game shines on PS5. Of course I have no idea what it would look like on PS4 b/c that game doesn't exist but it looks awesome on PS5. Sackboy looks a bit better on PS5, and it seems like that added more vibration, but I haven't played long, just moving over the save file. Still need to test out Ghost, but I don't feel like paying $10 for the upgrade. 😝

Fenyx has a performance mode and a quality mode. Make sure to go with performance to see the difference - otherwise it’s just going to be a little sharper, I guess. Also make sure that you actually upgraded the game and not just moved the PS4 version!

Sackboy on the other hand adds some cool details to the environment (you might not notice it unless you take a closer look at the same locations but I personally thinks they’re nice touches) and the haptics are kinda nice too.

@rjejr If you copied over the game from the PS4, I wonder if you need to download the PS5 version. If you look at the game on the Home Screen, it should tell you which version you have next to the name.

As someone else said, make sure you didnt move the ps4 version over to ps5 (unless there only IS a ps4 version, then you have no choice). You should be able to get the ps5 version automatically if it updates, plus also it's kinda confusing as now there are options to DL the ps4 or ps5 version. I dunno if there's a difference, but quality mode will show you a lil better grafx, while performance mode will run 60 frames. But I've yet to see a HUGE grafx leap between quality and performance modes. I use performance. I literally have NOT seen a reason not to use performance mode, the grafx detail seems... 95% identical. 60 frames are much appreciated in games, too, as Ratchet/Clank on PS5 shows. I have a PS5 since summer and now a new tv since a few weeks ago, so I should try Fenyx again and see how it looks.

The Nintendo Switch is the only console that predicts its own future... after 5 years of nothing but weaboo games, you're ready to switch to another console!

I've had a PS5 since release and can honestly say, FOMO aside, I probably needn't have bothered. There's no huge difference to my mind. Admittedly I don't have a brand new 4K blah blah blah TV to go with it, but the difference between PS5 and PS4, compared to PS3 and PS4, is negligible I reckon.

But then I'm not one to spot small differences in things really. Even music, with this new 'spatial audio' stuff, it doesn't sound any different to me!

@rjejr Haven't got much experience with the PS5 (obviously!) but I think you need to download the PS5 native version? As @Thrillho said, there's supposed to be an icon next to the title to say which version is installed?

So, are you enjoying the white monolith or is your son occupying it 24/7? Thought it was supposed to be a Christmas present?

sanderson72

rjejr

@sanderson72 I think my kid downloaded and installed only the PS5 version, not the PS4 version. I think that b/c I have both versions of Sackboy installed, 2 icons. Is it too soon to start asking for folders yet or do we have to wait 5 years like Switch?😝 My kid was already asking me about themes. πŸ˜‚ I haven't played anything yet, ok maybe 10 minutes in the Astrobot Playroom hub just to see what it looked like. Kid is playing mostly R&C:RA but they're busy w/ school and fencing and D&D. Not in person D&D, but I think they're in 2 groups doing 3 "campaigns" like constantly. My wife and I have been watching a lot of tv shows and football but gaming should begin soon.

And it was a Christmas & Hanukkah gift, we just celebrated early, Thanksgiving Eve. πŸ˜‰

@tomassi Do you not have a 4k tv? I can't imagine there's ANY difference between PS4 and PS5 on 1080p. Personably I was never impressed from PS3 to PS4 either, last great jump was 32/64 to 128 bit, PS1, Saturn, N64 to Dreamcast, PS2 and Wii. SD to HD was the big jump to next gen but otherwise not much. I bought a 1080p tv 11 years ago for PS3, a 4k tv for PS5. Had I not blown $1,000 on a 4k tv back in March to watch Godzilla vs Kong on HBO Max and I still had the 1080p we might still have the
PS4. Also I didn't know what else to get my kid's for Christmas. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Had R&C:RA been on PS4 we wouldn't have a PS5, no doubt in my mind, that 1 game did us in.

@Pixelated To be fair my 1 kid playing said he could see a difference, my other kid agreed w/ me, no difference, so it could be an eyesight thing. I still don't think I can tell 30 - 60 unless it's side to side or back to back. I mostly play JRPG so frame rate isn't really an issue for me. R&C did look silky smooth though if it is 60fps that could be why. And of course graphically it makes Immortals look like BotW anyway, very different aesthetic.

@Thrillo Thanks, I'll look into that, thought it was PS5 but I could be wrong. I know it was ON PS5 and we own the game digitally so I assumed it would just download the PS5 version. I know they were using their PS4 save so maybe not?

@Voltan "Fenyx has a performance mode and a quality mode."

OK I'll just assume my kid was playing on the other 1, I didn't actually see them boot it up, just walked in while they were playing.

"haptics are kinda nice too."

Yeah I'm never going to remember that word but it certainly felt different the 30 seconds I was running around the hub. Maybe start playing again for real this weekend, Cowboys - Saints tonight. Thanks.

@rjejr The art style on I:FR doesn't really benefit much from 4k native, IMO. I often have a hard time picking between wanting 60fps and better gfx in games, but I switched to performance mode on I:FR quickly and was amazed that the visuals didn't take an noticeable dive at all other than the sharpness of dead trees in the first area. And a game that moves fast and fluid like that wants to be 60fps. I couldn't take the jittery slideshow of 30fps in that game. On performance, visually it'll look the same, then on PS4/5, but obviously double the framerate. (I played on XSX but I'm sure it'll be the same.)

I love that game, but I wouldn't want to play it at 30fps. I used to be one of those people in my PC days that would crank it to 1600x1200, max all the sliders, and deal with 12fps so everything was as photographic as possible. These days I feel I'm more likely to deal with whatever visual hits it takes and get smooth 60fps play. 30fps just feels uncomfortable now. Though LCD vs CRT back in the day with all the latency associated might be part of that.

Only exception is Yakuza:LaD that takes such a hit to the visuals in performance mode it's like playing it on a WiiU.

@rjejr 30fps in Immortals felt really sluggish to me, but really smooth at 60fps. It's not really a visual thing unless there are significant dips, it is more how the game feels to play. And I'm only a recent convert having never noticed any difference, although I'm not sure how good my base PS4 and old TV were at offering that. Unless you have really big TV and sat quite close, most people won't notice much difference between 4k and the dynamic resolution performance mode offers in this game.

@rjejr All games are a little different but I think if you have the digital version, just do the following;

1) Check what version it is. It sounds like you've probably got the PS4 version. So here you can see it says "PS5" next to the name of the game.

Untitled

2) Drop down to the triple dot and when you select it, "select version" will hopefully appear

Untitled

3) Download the version you want

Untitled

I imagine you might be able to do it just through the store if you wanted too but I don't know that for certain.

@NEStalgia Who let you in here? BTW this wasn't the thread I was talking about. πŸ˜‰ Makes sense about the 30 vs 60, next time my kid boots it up we'll mess around w/ the settings, even if I can't see a difference he's all about the dodging and hit boxes so he'll probably notice the change in gameplay. Max settings in PC days was 640x480 if I was lucky on my Cyrix DX2 66. Actual 1 frame per second slideshows. Ever play Redneck Rampage at 1 frame per second, it was kind of funny. πŸ˜‚

@JohnnyShoulder Thanks, as I mentioned above, we'll try out the settings next time they play. TV is 75" but we sit like 10' away. How do Brits measure their TVs, is that like 190cm tv, sounds huge. πŸ˜†

@Thrillho Thanks. Looking forward to making PS4 and PS5 folders for the PS5's 5th anniversary. As I mentioned earlier, we haev 2 icons for Sackboy but I think only 1 for Immortals. 1 of the nice things about themes is knowing which account we're logged into, mine or theirs, we each had our own set of folders so we had things where we wanted. W/o themes or folders I'm not even sure if we both need to download both versions of the game or just 1 of us, still need time to fully mess around.

If you're in the US when you go to your "Games library' on Sony . com or whatever the website is when you click on download it does have a dropdown box to choose your system by ID, downloading Dreams to my PS5 right now. So that's nice.

@rjejr You would think so, but no I think TV screen size is universally measured in inches. 75"? Don't think that would fit on my lounge wall let alone my current TV stand. πŸ˜†

@rjejr I'm either drawn like a magnet to threads with you, or to threads involving Fenyx. You get two guesses and your first one doesn't count

I actually HAVE played Redneck Rampage inn the software renderer at frame rates not far from there! That was a good game... We need a remake. Your move bluepoint!

I'm somehow becoming intolerant of low fps. TES Oblivion is one of the games on PC I bought a new video card for to crank the settings to Max the trees. But I just started up teso to check out the next gen updates and the framerate on default fidelity mode just annoyed the heck out of me. It's pretty but not in motion. I quickly moved to to performance and all is good. Not as pretty but it feels more real. Heck PC gamers tell me once you're used to 120, even 60 seems slow. For me 60 is a sweet spot for anything that isn't vr.

I haven't really had the confusion a lot have had with the whole PS4/5 version thing. I want to gripe that what ms did isn't rocket science, how can Sony not just do that? But really their way has only given me 2 confusing episodes, and one if them is ff7r mostly because of the dlc and how it's handled. I think it's worse for anyone that copied over their PS4 data which doesn't sound like it works well. I just started clean, downloaded stuff from scratch, and moved my usb drive over.

NEStalgia

JohnnyShoulder

@NEStalgia I might be wrong, but I think Oblivion is one of games to benefit of FPS boost on XBox. Somone on a podcast I was listening to mentioned how great it felt to play at a higher frame rate that was stable.

NEStalgia

@JohnnyShoulder I forgot about that, but I think you're right! IDK if it's the monitor tech, or if it's me just getting less tolerant of lower fps, or if once you've played several games back to back at 60fps, you become really sensitive to 30. But so many games at 30fps just bother me now. I love the look of them in their quality modes, but while they look so much better when standing still, the jittery motion and choppy animation ruins the look of it while in motion, And games are in motion much more than not unless it's a stealth game.

NEStalgia

JohnnyShoulder

@NEStalgia I've certainly become less tolerable to 30fps since I've upgraded my TV and got a PS5. Some PS4 games that I've played on my PS5, and then played on my dad's PS4 and TV (which is my old 1080p TV) I have definitely noticed a difference. So much, that I've struggled to play them for say over an hou at a time.

PSN: JohnnyShoulder

NEStalgia

@JohnnyShoulder Yeah. Technically I think I was always sensitive to fps framerate and didn't realize it. Back in the PC days I was obsessed with resolution and always put up with low frame rates, and both PC and console day I'd get fatigued playing a game for a while. I've come to realize that's related to the framerate. Back then it was on CRTs so the situation was a little different. It's worse now with display latency. But getting spoiled by so much 60fps I think has managed to make me even more sensitive to it.

Some people are the other way though, the smooth motion gets them nauseous, somehow by having real-life looking motion while they themselves are still.

NEStalgia

rjejr

@NEStalgia "PC gamers" Well that was your first mistake. πŸ˜‰

Not sure we need a Redneck Rampage remake, we're kind of living it - see Rittenhouse and that murderer from Michigan who doesn't look the least bit like an escapee from Arkham. smh

FF7R seems like just more of the FF15 fiasco. I'm still not sure how to get Yuffie as DLC. The PS+ version not upgrading for free I understand, but it still seems confusing. Though I must be easily confused b/c I'm still trying to figure out Ghost of Tsushima. We have the PS4 game on disc, but it doesn't seem like you can buy the $20 DLC anywhere on the PS5, you have to buy the Directors cut. Maybe I just need to to look better.

Copying over my save data via ethernet cables corrupted my Sackboy save, haven't tried any others yet, still dealing w/ my PS+ mistake. I've decided not having themes contributed to it, my kid and I had very different themes on PS4, I also had all my games in Folders, they had no folders, but on PS5 I can't really tell who's account I'm in just by looking at the TV. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

So basically we went from "We know generations" to "We know how to screw generations up". 😝

NEStalgia

@rjejr LOL, I switched from PC to console and I'm still burning out power supplies. It's a curse....

Redneck Rampage added trucks and hooch though. That makes it better.

Nobody has managed to get the upgrade thing quite as wrong as Squeenix. ESPECIALLY 7R. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure it all out. Yeah, PS+ version doesn't get the upgrade (which is almost as bad as the Godfall situation having a special build of the game that doesn't get the thing the normal build gets but is otherwise the same.) PS4 version purchasers get the upgrade. But the upgrade doesn't include Yuffie DLC. PS5 "Intergrade" buyers get the Yuffie DLC. So PS4 owners have to specifically go download the Intergrade upgrade, but it gives you a different, DLC-less Intergrade than peple that bought Intergrade, and the Integrade page tells you you can't buy or download it.

I think I figured out you have to do a search for FF7R in the store, find the special item that's just the PS4 to PS5 upgrade item, do the upgrade, then go the PS4 version page scroll down to the DLC, and there you can see the purchase item for the Yuffie DLC.

It's a clusterf. Tsushima is almost as bad, though not quite that level of bad, because they sell the PS4 game, the DC for PS4 owners, the DC with upgrade for PS5 owners, and somewhere the upgrade by itself for PS4 owners. I spent a while on that one too. Those are the two worst titles i've seen for this.

IIRC you CAN just buy the DLC. I think if you go to the non-director's cut page and scroll down it's in the DLC for the base PS4 game.. Or just do a search in the store, but I'm positive I saw it there (I did choose to do the upgrade just because.) You might have to do it on the console. I think the disastrous PC store doesn't have all the options, if you're browsing on phone or computer.

On XSeries you just go to "FF15" and hit "Install". That's it, you're done.... You don't even need a screwdriver.

I never copied over my saves and had to start games over. I counted on cloud saves working but for some reason my PS4 never actually uploaded cloud saves after like 2016 which is very annoying. Why did I pay all those years? (Meanwhile I loaded my Deus Ex HR save on xbox last year and it loaded my save game from Christmas Eve 2011...... and I didn't even pay for Gold.... If you're going to charge....please do it better than the guys that aren't charging at all..... ) GoT and Deathloop have both prompted me that my cloud save is corrupted and I have to quit the game, and force a resync (it won't let me do it while the game is running. They're definitely just copying Nintendo with their online infrastructure now...
