So no doubt some may call me a fanboy or something.... but I literally have no interest in the MAJORITY of third party published games. Sony has just set the bar so high for quality AAA titles over the past decade, that to me, is hardly matched by any other developer. Except maybe perhaps Rockstar games. I mean I tried Elden Ring, and I do like it ... but technically it doesn’t run the greatest, especially since I just came off of playing Horizon. I don’t know, I’d say about 95% of the games I buy are published by Sony, the other odd time it’s like Rockstar or maybe FromSoft. Any one else on the same boat or am I alone and weird ? I mean am I truly missing out on anything spectacular ?

Try to play multi console games. (The games on PlayStation, Nintendo and XBOX machines)
Nothing wrong to play other games, even they are non popular or smaller games.

@Wasted_Smuggler Well, I mean… I like the Sony published games a whole lot too, but I’d hardly make up a gaming diet that is made up of nothing else. I’ve enjoyed 90% of the first party output, but I also really enjoy games published by many other companies like Ubisoft, Square-Enix, Atlus, EA, Capcom, etc, etc. In fact, I may not even pay attention to who the publisher is if it’s not Sony. But there is a boatload of good games out there. I’d say my library is probably about 30-40% Sony published.

Part of the reason you might feel underwhelmed at third party output right now is because it’s early in the generation so the Sony published content is going to be more optimized for the hardware, but over time it will get better across the board.

Maybe not normal, but not unusual either. It's just like how some people are only interested in the latest annual sports games.

If something outside of the AAA Sony games catches your interest, it could be worth trying it out. You might find a new type of game that you enjoy. But otherwise, just keep playing whatever you want to play.

Personally, I'm fairly varied with my gaming habits. Of course, I've still got my favourites, as well as genres that I'm not too keen on.

@Th3solution you are right. First party has a better grasp on the hardware and ultimately it just means exclusives look miles ahead of anything else. Third party on the other hand , they are still working largely with old-gen consoles, current-gen and PCs. So their games are not specifically optimized for just one system. I agree with you that over time this will change.

Overall though I am learning to look past graphics in games. Truly it should be all about gameplay first. Good Graphics are a nice bonus though. It’s just hard playing like say Horizon FW then moving onto Elden Ring..... it’s like so weird . But like I said, I am learning to look past that. It will help me enjoy games more, no matter who is making them.

If it is not on Gamepass, it is not worth your time or money.

@Wasted_Smuggler Well, as you venture out into the wider world of third-party exclusives, searching for something that grabs you, all I can say is...

Honestly, whilst I don't personally agree with your approach, I can understand how a steady diet of first-party exclusives could perhaps heighten your expectations for some games. If performance and technical quality is really important to you, then try the biggest, most successful third-party brands first, ones that have had enough budget and polish thrown at them to compete. Either that, or just play third-party games a year late, so that they've (hopefully) had plenty of post-release patches to stabilise them.

Like others have said, there's no shame in being specific. Just because something seems popular doesn't mean you have to like it, nor does it mean that you should.

@Wasted_Smuggler Play what you like.

I love all Sony's first party output but I'll give anything a go. In the past 5 years I've played so much different types of games and fell in love with JRPG's, turn based and real time. Recently bought Super Monkey Ball as I've never played them before and jeez people think fromsoft games are tough 😂.

@Wasted_Smuggler I do get you on some level, the Sony 1st Party AAA’s are like the gaming equivalent of the MCU in movies. They always deliver a ‘certain’ type of product that caters to vast swathes of the gaming/cinema-goer community. I pretty much always enjoy them myself… and always look forward to the next. As a result, I’ve been quite ‘blinkered’ in regards to the games that I would play in the past too.

Having said that, I now make a concerted effort to ‘mix-things-up’ in an effort to keep things fresh… and as a result gaming has become even more enjoyable. I try and play at least one indie a month, never play two games of the same genre (or adjacent genres) consecutively and always look for good examples of genres that I’ve rarely, if ever tried before. As a result, I’ve ended up experiencing some really great games that I would never have even considered before.

I think it is normal. It isn't about this being better than that, it's about you liking this over that and when it comes to what you like every mind is a world. For me, I just play what hypes me the most i don't play just because i don't have anything else to do that's why services like gamepass or the service from sony if there is a service don't work with me. Before Horizon FW i played only yugioh master duel every day, 3 to 4 hrs per day since release on my switch and before that I wasn't playing anything since Death's Door release on ps5.

@Wasted_Smuggler Personally I'm not interested in Uncharted, God of War and largely Horizon. But my taste in games has always shifted - I was madly into indie games around 2012-2014 but now I generally stay away from them. And around 2008 I played a lot of story driven third person games like Uncharted and Enslaved. So, maybe I will get into those types of games again.

I'd say you're missing out not playing games like Elden Ring, Nier, Divinity and Pillars of Eternity but that's just my own taste. As long as you're having fun and try to be respectful to people with different opinions it's all good.

@Wasted_Smuggler The bar set by Sony first party games is certainly high so I can totally get why you could just stick with them. When I first got back into PlayStation I hammered the first party stuff and really enjoyed it, however there was a whole world of games out there that are at least worth exploring. Thinking of all the games I've played in the last few years I would have missed out on some real classics like Hollow Knight, Death's Door, Control, Mass Effect, Heavenly Bodies, the list goes on.

It's definitely worth broadening your horizons as you might find something you never imagined you'd enjoy.

Nothing wrong to play games like Paw Patrol, My Universe games, Portal Knights, Dragon Quest Builders 2, The Sims 4, Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles, etc because I played these games on my PS4 Slim.

I have a weird lack of enthusiasm for Sony's AAA first-party stuff. Like, God of War was undeniably high-quality, and I liked it enough to platinum it, but I can't honestly say I loved it, and I'm also totally apathetic about the follow-up.

I enjoy Uncharted games as well, but they're not something I'd ever buy at release. I'm not passionate about them.

Horizon Zero Dawn was great, so I am looking forward to grabbing the sequel, at least.

Gravity Rush 3 would be a day one buy, but we all know what happened with Japan Studio.

Playstation consoles for me have traditionally been primarily about Japanese third-party exclusives. That's obviously a thing of the past now, but, for the longest time, Playstation consoles were indispensable for fans of major Japanese series (barring seventh gen, when 360 had a weirdly much better exclusive JRPG line-up than PS3).

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

Yes, Sony’s excellent first party games can spoil you, they are simply fantastic. I also play smaller AA games like JRPGs which don’t compare in quality, just because I like them.

Should you try them? I would say yes, but the poorer quality may put you off.

The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.

Just check out other genres. You know you like the cinematic, linear games(r&c, gow); your cinematic, open world, clear the map games(hzd, GoTsushi). Tetris effect is polished, rdr 2, re 2/3 remake, re vii, re village, mk 11, blasphemous, hades, botw, Mario odyssey, Mario kart 8, risk of rain 2, dragon quest xi, the witcher III, metro, titanfall 2...
