Moral of the story... be patient.

It is pretty silly to be fair. They made it clear that you’d have to pay for the PS5 upgrade.

Except they didn't say anything about Plus because it wouldn't have been on the cards yet. If people can't be bothered waiting then that's the risk you take.

@AdamNovice Come on, OP clearly has a point as it’s only been 3 months and there were statements from Remedy outright saying that the game wouldn’t be free. It would be like Microsoft releasing an exclusive saying that it wouldn’t be on Game Pass and then adding it to Game Pass 3 months after release.

Remedy already lost my confidence when they started the whole debacle. I was never going to buy the game again just for the upgrade. This is just d@#£bag move on top of it. They're in it for the money, and it's obvious. They don't care if people bought the Ultimate edition for the upgrade if they can get a lump sum from Sony a month later to put it on PS+.

has it definitely been 100% confirmed that if you redeem the PS+ version in february, the PS5 native version will be downloadable without cost in march?.. i kinda half expect there to be a bunch of caveats with this being available on PS+.

i'm more curious on whether the announcement has any significance on sony's wider relationship with remedy.. rumours on them working on something exclusively for PS5 have done a number of rounds.

Surely the publisher is more at fault rather than the developer? Outrage should be towards 505 Games.

I did almost buy the ultimate edition when it was on sale, but stopped myself as I already had Demon's Souls and am trying to only buy games that I will play straight away.

Yeah, I feel for those who’ve bought the game twice now. I wonder if the backlash about having to pay for the upgrade played any role in the decision to just give it away on Plus.

I’m thrilled at having it on Plus next month, since I was waiting to buy it until after the upgrade released for PS5

I will just post what I said in the article.

Give it a rest people. That the gamble you take by having a PS+ membership. I can't tell you how many times I bought a game only to have it offered as a PS+ game a month or two later.

I mean to only thing you can do is not buy games at all and just sit and hope they come to PS+ or whatever.

This is one reason I feel that instead of giving a free game with PS+ give a $20 dollar coupon instead every month so we can choose what game we would like.

I didn’t buy it twice, but I expressely bought the ultimate edition in the Black Friday sale because of the ps5 upgrade. I haven’t touched the game yet because I was waiting for the ps5 version. Kinda bait-and-switch, but at least it was a good sale.

@JapaneseSonic That's not necessarily true. A $10 upgrade fee (or whatever it would be) wasn't even on the table; you effectively have to buy the game again if you want the PS5 patch. They're not updating the base game. To be told to buy the game on PS4, put it on sale, and then give it away for free to PS+ subscribers just isn't a good look. It wasn't last year when they announced that only the upcoming Ultimate edition would be patched on PS5, and it certainly isn't now.

Let's say you're a big Remedy fan:
1. You bought the game when it came out.
2. You bought the Season Pass.
3. You get told that the game won't be patched, only the Ultimate Edition, which is the base game with the season pass included. So even if you already ''bought'' the content of the UE, you need to buy it again to get the next gen patch.
4. You buy the UE, which they put on sale a few weeks before launch.
5. And then it turns out it was a free game on PS+ all along.

Some people have bought the game twice, along with the season pass, and still got it for free on a sub they are already paying for. I personally don't think this is a good look. And some transparency would've gone a long way. I get that there's some unwritten rule that PS+ games aren't allowed to be revealed until mere days before; but an exception in this case would've made a big difference.

And sure, some are saying that's the risk you take, but I personally think this will only push more people to wait for sales, or wait for games to come to PS+. And that's the last thing you'd want as a dev or publisher.

@AdamNovice Sorry but that really isn't the moral of the story. If you want to play a game, you buy it whenever you want to. You don't have to wait for it to be on PS+ or for it to be discounted.

The poster has every right to feel aggrieved but this, I know I would do! It's just one of those rare situations where Sony has given us something free (kind of) that alot of people have actually wanted to purchase and have purchased en mass beforehand.

@JapaneseSonic Of course, you may get a refund, but that wouldn't have happened if people didn't say anything. And until it is officially announced, there's no reason to assume you'll be getting it at all. These companies aren't charities after all.

@JapaneseSonic They must have known, or should have, rather. They have a marketing department, they have business meetings, they should've known this.

This is a publisher decision - I doubt Remedy had much to do with it. The Ultimate edition is little more than the GOTY version.

However, this was very clearly a planned job and so shady. Everyone was told there would be a PS5 upgrade via the Ultimate Edition. There was a backlash on this but 505 doubled down. They THEN did a marketing point of slashing prices (and advertising it) so that people would buy the ultimate edition, then to make more cash, have now given it away with a deal with Sony.

I have Ultimate Edition on PC (where I paid less then £20) and the game has ray-tracing etc. and is quite gorgeous so I can see why people wanted to get this ready for the PS5.

Sigh - not much can be done, they've probably made all the money out of people buying the Ultimate edition and then figured, well... why not sell it on?

Controversial point though - this game is slightly overrated.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

Agree with all the sentiment here. Yes, i do agree there is always a risk of being stung by buying a game and then getting it offered for free shortly after. But I also think this situation is unique in the ways previously described.
Comparably, I think this is akin to the Spider-Man situation (albeit obviously different due to the properties involved), whereby the native PS5 version is locked behind the upgrade purchase or having to buy the Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales. I don’t think Sony would ever dare have offered Spider-Man PS5 version on Plus now as a smack in the face of those who bought the upgraded version, and it’s even been out in the wild being played and enjoyed for a couple months.

It’s a fine line these companies draw, and like was said — they aren’t charities. So they do what they think will make them money. However, I agree that the look for 505/Remedy is tarnished and gamer confidence in buying games before release has definitely taken a hit with this, which will hurt publishers in the long run.

For example, I respect that Sony was clear months ago that Destruction All-Stars was coming free with Plus, rather than string people along being tempted to buy it. Same with Bugsnax which was telegraphed before release that it’s coming to Plus.

Honestly, I wonder if Sony had advertised “Control UE is coming to PS+ In February” a couple months ago, how would it have affected overall revenue? I think it would have probably created a lot of interest in the service and sold some subscriptions. Yet, it would have meant very few people would have bought the game. So I’m not sure which is better.

I'm appalled by this and will be boycotting Control. Fortunately, there's no risk of any other games I buy ever coming to PS Plus.
