Topic: PS4 Pro not recognizing capabilities of my Samsung 8500.

I bought a curved Samsung 8500 4K HDR on Black Friday from Best Buy and hooked my PS4 Pro up to it and the PS4 Pro sends me a message saying the TV's capabilities COULD be greater than what's being displayed and setting may have to be adjusted. I hit the info button and it showed it was running at 2160P YUV 420 and that 2160P RGB and HDR wasn't supported by the TV. WTH? I called Geek Squad and they said all I had to do was put the TV in Gaming mode and it would take care of the rest. I had already done that. They wanted to schedule a visit out to my house to get the TV dialed in right but had such a vague window of when they'd be there I told them no for now. I can't miss work and sit at home for 8 hours and wait for them to show up. I've googled it and got a bunch of different responses. One being that I have it hooked up to an HDMI that doesn't support 4K HDR (I guess some models don't have all their ports capable of that, I don't know why) and another being I have to go into the settings and turn the particular HDMI port that I have the Pro plugged into "ON" for UHD HDR. That sounds redundant as hell to me. I thought the system and the tv were supposed to talk to each other the second you fired them up so they knew what was connected to each other. Any help would be appreciated.

@Dustyminpin I have the KS7000, same process. You do need to go into the picture settings and turn the setting to "on" for "HDMI UHD Color" within the expert settings submenu. Once you've done this, if working correctly, the TV will auto detect when HDR content is being displayed - you won't need to do it each time. By default, all of mine were off, so I had to turn HDMI 1 "on" and then put my PS4 into this socket to get it working. Best thing to do is turn them all on, then regardless of the HDMI socket you're using you won't have a problem.

Have you checked this? Are they on or off?

If so, it could be the cable - from my research any HDMI cable made from around 2010-2011 onwards shouldn't have an issue with HDR content however it could be worth trying another cable. You don't need to spend a ton of money on a great cable, and even "HDR approved" ones can be problematic if they are over a certain length apparently..

Seems you aren't alone. I see this TV come up a lot on the PS4 Pro subreddit. Might dig around there to see if anyone found a solution. https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4Pro/search?q=Samsung+8500&res...

I'm using the supplied HDMI cable that came with the system. I've got high dollar 3ft long Monster Cable 1000 series for some of my other stuff but they're older and Sony has warned from using the older cables. I am at work right now. I will check the UHD Color setting in the HDMI when I get home. Seems foolish to me they wouldn't have all come from the factory set to ON and if it didn't pick up the signal, it didn't pick up the signal, and it'd just display whatever was being fed. If it wasn't for the PS4 Pro actually sending me a message while I was playing crucible in Destiny, I wouldn't have thought anything about the picture. Sure it looked way better than my older flat screen 1080p Samsung that replaced it and I already knew that Bungie said they weren't offering a 4K HDR version of Destiny until Destiny 2 comes out next year, so I just assumed I was looking at the best picture available while playing that particular game.

@Dustyminpin: HDR and 4k are both still very very new 'standards' for TV manufacturers. Be in Samsung, LG, or even Sony, they are all having trouble with it right now since most boxes have been patched for it after the fact. Also, regardless of your HDR/resolution settings, Destiny won't look any better as it doesn't support HDR or 4k. It (and everything else) could potentially benefit from other settings/calibrations from the TV though.

Yeah, I know about the Destiny resolution. I bought Final Fantasy XV last night at midnight and let it do it big update/download last night while I slept and am going to play it when I get home today for the first time and want the screen to be right for it. I also have Knack and Infamous Second Son and First Light which were supposed to be redone in 4K HDR and plan on playing those again as well.

@Dustyminpin: The problem isn't with the TV or manufacturer and when Samsung released this TV, very few devices offered 4k let alone HDR so setting the HDMI UHD Colour to off made more sense to ensure complete compatibility with peoples devices. Samsungs 4k HDR Bluray automatically switches this on when you play a 4k HDR Bluray but off again with standard Blurays to ensure that it accurately displays the content.

As more and more devices actually offer HDR, then it may seem 'foolish' to limit the HDMI inputs this way but on release, I can'y think of any HDMI device that offered 4k HDR capability! I am sure more would complain if the TV was set to 'on' as a default option and found issues with just plug and play. This is not unique to Samsung either - although the naming is possibly. Other manufacturers did the same too...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@Dustyminpin: Yeah just check it's turned on, I found the picture settings required quite a lot of tweaking anyway to get how I wanted and making this adjustment was one of the first I did. Hope that sorts it for you.

Also, you won't like this, but for the best HDR effect you will need to manually set the backlight to 20 when playing HDR content. This will probably be too bright for normal viewing though so you will probably need to go back into picture settings and put it back down again.

Yeah, I had to manually turn on HDR on my Samsung. I had it for over a month and just assumed it was on intill I got the same message on the PS4 Pro.
