Initial rumors state Q1 2017. Devs have to get used to the new GPU. And I doubt Sony wants anything to interfere with PSVR, which is a tough sell as it is. I doubt they will reveal PS4K at E3.
Q1 2017 doesn't make sense because they'd have to announce it before Christmas but would kill/dent their holiday sales in the process. I actually agree with you that E3 is probably too early (I think they would have rather GamesCom or TGS) but their hand might be forced following all of the leaks.
I do agree that it's strange coming out close to PlayStation VR, though.
@get2sammyb: I think their e3 is going to be PSVR+exclusives mostly. I wouldn't expect ps4k announcement before TGS. PS revision models have never been announced at e3 anyway, to my knowledge.
@WebHead: You're spot on, they always do it later in the year. I just think with so many rumours floating, they're going to have to address the elephant in the room.
I think they've bit off more than they can chew honestly. And for better or worse, they absolutely have to address the situation sooner rather than later. Not necessarily now or even next month, but it has to be at E3.
PSVR has limited appeal and unless it has a range of 'must have' games at launch, unlikely to be a 'big' seller until the library builds up. Its a device that needs to be tried and as it doesn't have a library of VR ready games, could be a 'slow' seller. Its success will be determined by the software available. I can't see many people buying it for 1-2 games. Maybe after a few months, when it has a bigger library of games, it could gain momentum.
PS4k on the other hand already has an impressive library of games going back 3yrs. Chances are, the majority of people here have a number of games that will run on it and maybe some of those could get a 'patch' to play an enhanced version. From October, if the rumours are true, EVERY game released will have a 'Neo' mode. Even if the console doesn't launch to Q1, a lot of people will already own a game or two that will have a Neo mode. October/November often has some of the biggest selling games - this year its expected that BF5 will release in October before the inevitable CoD in November - 1 of the biggest selling games every year. Maybe Final Fantasy XV will get the 'Neo' mode even though its expected in September. We don't yet know exactly what games will be released from October and before Christmas but I bet a number of them are likely to be on most peoples wanted list. After Christmas of course, there are a number of big games that are releasing - Horizon: Zero Dawn (I assume its delayed), ME: Andromeda. It may benefit those with 1080p TV's offering a much more stable and higher frame rates and as it will run ALL the biggest games PS4 has to offer, both now and in the future, compared to PSVR which is only 'effective' in a small library. Yes it can be used as a screen for games but how many want to wear a headset like that to play games. I know the overall resolution is 1920x1080 but that's only 960x1080 per eye.
For what could be similar money, especially if you factor in Move and the Camera, you can buy a console you can play ALL your games on and future games at an 'enhanced' level or buy something that you need to buy 'games' for, build up a library etc. MP games will already have a potential user base of up to 40m compared to something like RIGS which is reliant on others owning a PSVR so very dependent on how many buy PSVR and which of those buy RIGS too.
The only reason I think Sony hasn't officially announced it yet, is that they haven't finalised the details. No doubt the 'game' related specs will stay - if not get tweaked upwards (CPU could be replaced by an 8core 14nm chip with faster clock speed, maybe the GPU could be clocked faster - it has the potential to run upto 1050, RAM could be increased or the amount available to developers or maybe even the bandwidth increased a bit - but essentially that's the 'minimum' specs developers will have to work with. Things like the overall console design, choice of Bluray drive (uHD or just a 4K upscaling drive), HDD etc may not be 'finalised' - they can't announce something unless they know exactly what they are offering and that could determine its price. To announce something now just looks unprofessional. How can they answer basic questions like how much will it cost? What's the console look like? When will it be available? if they don't know the 'final' product. If these things get sorted by E3, I can see an announcement. If it gets sorted before, then maybe Sony will address the 'rumours' beforehand and say something like 'wait for E3 for its official reveal'.
It makes sense to try and release before Christmas if possible. It could capture that market and 'spending' craze. Why would people buy a PS4 (if they haven't already) if they can wait a month or 2 and get the more powerful version? For those on a 'tighter' budget, they could essentially get a base PS4 for the 'next' gen gaming - maybe even for 'other' family members that have to share - for example one for the 'kids' bedroom or buy the PS4k and move the PS4 to a 'second' room. Given the choice, I would rather have a PS4 connected to a second TV than have to play with a 'headset' if the main TV is being used by other family members.
