Has anyone beaten this game yet? Played it? If you've beaten it, what tips and tricks would you offer? Apparently even seasoned gamers will struggle with it, what were/are your overall impressions of the game if you have played it? How far did you get? Is there any way to make it easier? Is it a good or bad game? Feel free to share your impressions of Cuphead here.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic I started playing it on Switch this June, because I didn't expect it to come to the PlayStation 4 anymore, but guess I was wrong. Anyway, I play it when I'm on the road mostly, or when I can't play on my PlayStation. That's not really often, so I haven't quite beaten it yet, though I'm close.

f you've beaten it, what tips and tricks would you offer?

I have a few tricks that help me a lot:

  • Don't focus on trying to parry every pink object. Some of them are pretty risky.
  • Try to pick a place to stand where you have the best overview of what's going on. Often my problem is just that there's going on way too much to process.
  • Most of all: pick the homing bullets as your secondary weapon. Whatever your primary weapon is, in every stage there will be moments where you won't be able to hit the boss directly, so always be sure to switch between those and much stronger bullets, depending on the situation.

Right now I'm in the last world of the game, so I've seen quite a bit of it. I think the look of the game is just so unique, and well done. Playing it I'm almost convinced that this is a game from the 40's. The art style is just really well done.

The music and sound are great too. I will often play this game with my headphones in, something that I don't do for many games on the Switch, because it's a bit of a handheld device for me.

And I think they got the difficulty just right. Yea, sure, this game will be too hard for some people. I don't even know if I will make it to the finish. But this game is fair every step of the way, and you don't have to do something very complex or something during the levels, you just have to be very, very focused. Like the levels in Super Mario World, all levels have their own gimmicks that you need to master, and they all can get pretty difficult, but the game never gets overly complex. And neither do you need to have super speed reflexes, if you just get really good at learning the patterns.

9/10 I'd rate it.

I use the shotgun one as my secondary, it’s really useful if you can get up close to the boss. Certain bosses can be shredded in no time at all as long as your reflexes are good.

It's a great game. Quite difficult, but it's not so bad once you start to learn the boss patterns. Practice makes perfect with this.

The art style and visuals are excellent. There's a lot of creativity with the bosses designs. And the music fits in well with it as well.

For weapons, I was mostly fine with the original Peashooter. The Spread weapon can be useful for some bosses when you're up close and personal with them along with the gun and run sections.

For abilities, I usually stuck with the Coffee, which fills up the special meter faster. On the final boss I switched to the Smoke Bomb, and that's probably a better ability to use. Smoke Bomb makes Cuphead invincible while dashing, which can help greatly to avoid attacks.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic I've played it 3 times or so on PC, then another 2 times on Switch. It's one of my favorite games of the generation.

Anyway... tips?

  • Poke around the overworld. There are little side-quests to accomplish and hidden coins to find, and you'll want all the coins to fill out your arsenal.
  • The peashooter is actually a really excellent weapon, and remains viable throughout the game. Don't feel like you need to transition away from it when you get something new.
  • If you're having trouble on a boss, switch to the homing bullets and focus on dodging the enemy's attacks. Bosses attack with a pattern in this game, so if you read their tells, you should be able to predict what they're going to do.
  • In general, try not to take stupid risks in the boss fights. Inflicting a little bit of extra damage isn't worth taking a hit, and unless you're trying to S-rank the bosses on Expert difficulty, you don't need to worry too much about optimizing your DPS.
  • If you're struggling to parry the pink projectiles in this game, consider equipping the P-Sugar, which allows you to automatically parry them when you come into contact with them after jumping.
  • Try not to get frustrated with a tough boss after a few deaths. Sometimes it took me 20 - 30 tries when I first played before I managed to enter into the zen state needed to conquer some of the challenges in this game.
  • On that note: just breathe. It's easy to panic when you see the chaotic animations, swarms of bullets, etc. In general, though, you're your own worst enemy in this game.
