@Jimmer-jammer good to hear that you’re enjoying it, the media have done a good job of making me slide this right down my list of priorities... I’ll be interest3 to hear more as you progress, if you continue to like it, it may force it back into contention a bit.

I played for several hours last night and I like it but the combat feels a bit......how will I put it? weird in parts? funny button combinations needed to pull off some flashy moves which are going to take a little bit of getting used to. The narrator doesn't bother me personally despite the complaints and you can turn him off anyway if you want to.. Oh and the World looks beautiful in 4K.

I bought the Xbox version and I'm playing on Series X.

@colonelkilgore yeah I’m curious to see the kind of legs it has. It throws a lot at you in the beginning and it’s all pretty slow paced. Just as it was starting truly open up I had to call it quits. Honestly it feels like an old school all ages platformer with some new school ideas. There is some buy-in needed here as some design decisions (such as the narrator) are not gonna be for everyone.

A taste of the writing (serious paraphrasing here): I just crafted a sword and in talking to the trainer, chose a dialogue option along the lines of, “I think it’s really cutting edge.” The narrator proceeds to say, “The trainer can appreciate someone able to retort with such a sharp remark.” If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you’ll probably want to hang yourself by the end of this. For me, it’s charming and enjoyable.

@RubyCarbuncle the combat has clicked with me but there is definitely a rhythm to it. It’s kind of slow paced as far as button inputs go but flashy on screen. The world really is beautiful!

@Jimmer-jammer buddy, if in game dialogue was enough to put me off a game I would’ve quit a long time ago. 🤣

Off topic, had my second sesh of Ashen today... just an awesome souls-like. I was hoping to finish my first play through today but after a few goes of Sissna I’ve decided to call it quits for the day. Her second phase is insane!

Jimmer-jammer

@colonelkilgore haha! Fair enough.

For me, Ashen is one of the best souls-likes I’ve played. It’s stripped down but has enough of its own ideas and identity to make it something special in its own right. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Sissna is...wildly unbalanced compared to the rest of the game. I hadn’t really struggled with a boss too much until her and I still feel like a bit of luck was involved in defeating her. I must have fought her 20 times, needless to say I was pretty fed up with the cave journey to get to her but in classic souls fashion, that feeling once she dropped is just unbelievably satisfying.

I’m liking it a lot so far, I’d be playing it now if I didn’t have Mass Effect 2 and 3 to finish. The one thing I’m not too keen on is the narration when talking to NPC’s.

I am taking the Mekton over to the Jumbo Puff now for the first real boss fight of the game, worried I am going to get into trouble here. Otherwise

sqvip hunting
was great fun and am glad I now I have enough ammo for the aforementioned device. Who else sided with
the Myriads?

@TheBrandedSwordsman sorry I didn’t get back to you in the other thread, busy busy 😅
I will definitely be going back there! I’ve opened up a lot of mekton chests but haven’t been back to Gizmo yet. To be honest, I find the actual storytelling very clunky and uninteresting - I don’t even feel that I understand the whole mirage/flashback thing...but Out of Date is certainly a charming moniker. I’ve helped rebuild three villages now! Have you figured out how to tame mounts? I have a gnoat to ride but haven’t found the items needed to tame the wild ones.

@TheBrandedSwordsman thanks! I thought I looked around them but I’ll have to look a little harder.

@Jimmer-jammer You have to slide under bushes that sprout the item, in my experience. I forget which button does that for you, though. (Probably triangle - maybe?)

@TheBrandedSwordsman unfortunately I had no time for gaming yesterday so hopefully tonight I can give it a whirl.

Looks like they’re really taking notes and trying to improve the experience. Cool.

@Jimmer-jammer @Voltan Defeated the first real boss of the game, the Jumbo Puff

pleased with my progress. Now it''s off to see

Out-Of-Date again. By the way, Jimmer, if you want to put spoiler tags on you just write [ spoiler ] before what you want to say then [ / spoiler ] after you have said it to block out the text, without the spaces, in case you want to keep certain details from people who may not want them revealed yet.

Volt, it's a great game, can't recommend it enough.

@TheBrandedSwordsman thank you for that! I wasn’t sure how that worked. just a test that I will probably screw up at least once.

@TheBrandedSwordsman I haven’t fought a real boss yet but have a quest to go after porky puff. I’m hoping to put some serious time in this weekend. I did find what’s at the end of a rainbow though!

@Jimmer-jammer What was at the end of a rainbow? Porky Puff is meant to be the hardest boss in the game so you might want to cut your teeth against an easier boss first!
