It's a little weird because it looks a lot like MAG, but really doesn't play much like it at all. I think it's going to throw off a lot of people to be honest.
I'm probably the biggest fan of MAG you'll find here so it really got me. Here are some of the differences:
Socom focuses A LOT more on objectives rather than a run n' gun. It isn't really as fast paced (I feel the spawn times are a bit slow) and the weapons aren't as easy to use.
In terms of a PVP shooter, it won't appeal to the same crowd that MAG does. It's more difficult and has a higher learning curve. My main excitement for Socom 4 isn't the pvp, but the co-op, but it will depend a bit on the game modes. I used to play Socom Fire Team Bravo online for hours a day because the game modes were so fun (no spawns, team revives only ftw). I really hope they add something like that
Another thing to consider though is that MAG isn't the same game it was when it came out. Zipper worked really hard releasing free content that really changed and improved the game. I'm sure this attitude will follow to Socom as well.
