I'm not sure if this topic fits best in PSVR or PS4. I'm curious who else purchased this game and who is considering it. It's clear the game was designed very much with VR in mind but it is very enjoyable still on the TV screen.

The flying has a surprising amount of depth to it, might even go so far as to suggest it's a Star Wars flight simiulator. It's quite a challenging game. So much so that if you play a fleet battle with some friends and not everyone is bringing their A game, the AI will probably wipe the floor with you. That's on easy mode.

Thankfully the story mode is a lot more forgiving but still not a walk in the park on default. I put a few hours in and I'm enjoying it so far. Will try to give it a go in VR next week, should be interesting. For multiplayer, 5 people can team up at once, as it's all about 5 versus 5.

@LieutenantFatman Thanks for your thoughts. I think I've inadvertently shocked myself by not rushing to buy a Star Wars game at launch, but it was because it was marketed with a heavy focus on VR and multiplayer, two things which don't appeal to me. Seeing you call it enjoyable on television, and say that the story mode is forgiving (which, I've read elsewhere, is a solid eight-to-ten hours) means that I'll be able to get it someday soon, but I reckon I should be sensible and wait until it's twenty quid or less, simply because I won't be taking full advantage of its features.

Glad you're enjoying what you've played of it so far, and I hope its learning curve isn't too steep, so that you can start cleaning up in those Fleet Battles!

@RogerRoger
The multiplayer is crossplay so we found ourselves going up against all pc players a few times in the afternoon who were clearly playing on another level.
But I had some games later in the evening and the skill levels of players was more balanced as you might expect.

I feel the Rebels are slightly easier to play as a beginner, due to having shields. But with practice I'm sure the sides will be relatively well balanced.

The game is already cheap on release, I think I pre-ordered it for £30 or so. So you probably won't have to wait long to find it at the price you want. If you do fancy teaming up online at some point, let me know. The option to team up against the AI is nice to have.

@LieutenantFatman Yikes. I can imagine crossplay making this kind of game a nightmare; not only because of those using KB&M but also because of joysticks and adaptive VR controllers. Glad you found some balanced games later on. Hopefully it has better matchmaking than Battlefront II, which just seems to chuck you into any ol' server and wish you luck.

Sounds like it's pretty authentic (you're right, TIE Fighters don't have shields) so my inner fanboy is making me look at my wallet, but I still reckon I'll try patience for a bit.

Thanks for the offer of teaming up! If you're still playing it when I get it, I'd love to!

I'm definitely considering it. I watched a few gameplay streams yesterday (there were plenty about) and it looks promising. I did enjoy the space battles in Battlefront II. I'm mainly holding off as I was planning on just finishing up the games I have before the PS5 but maybe I'll squeeze one more in.

I'm loving it in VR, the visuals are sometime a bit muddy, but the gameplay is great. It would be brilliant if they gave it a PS5 patch, it looks amazing on the PC.

I'm absolutely shocking at it though, I'm playing with the Thrustmaster HOTAS too and I'm getting my ass kicked in the campaign. I might have to pay a bit more attention to the controls and all the attacking/defending options. I've skipped over a lot and some are pretty hard to remember using the Thrustmaster HOTAS.

@SoulChimera
I seem to do fairly well in fleet battles online but in dog fights mode you sometimes meet people that seem to play on another level. I still haven't tried it in psvr, really need to do that soon.

Also check out this awesome moment:

Edit:
Just figured out how to do linked boosting aka micro drifting and wow, it's fun to do. It's a real game changer when using the large, slower ships, especially with slam engines installed.

Has anyone played this in VR? I'd like to, and since I have the camera adapter for PS5, I'm wondering if I should hook up the PSVR to PS5. It's just a big hassle, and I was wondering if it's worth the upgrade. Do the visuals or frame rate improve noticeably on PS5?

I decided to go for it. It's more convoluted than I thought it would be LOL

I've not tried it in VR yet, sort of forgot about it to be honest. Setting up PSVR is a bit of a faff. From what I read there's not a huge improvement to the visuals on this but I'm sure it'll be worth doing anyway.

@LieutenantFatman Yeah, I went through the trouble of hooking it up to the PS5.

I had no idea the Dualsense wasn't supported. And I had to google how to sync a DualShock 4 to the PS5, because it's not as straightforward as it seems. Try doing anything with the DS4 without turning on the PS4!

Encountered an issue where the screen was just black, but after pulling all the cords out and plugging them back in, it worked.

Bit disappointing that half of the story stuff is presented as a cinema screen in VR. There's not even a 3D effect to it. Played the first two missions, and while flying around it neat, the game isn't really doing it for me.

Hey guys, on sale now on ps store for ps4, tempting really.
I love space games, flight games with some good feel/physics, and interesting maneuvers, tactics.

But im only interested in singleplayer, the campaign looks fun but pretty basic, i like the fleet battle, does playing solo with ai play out differently each time or it gets really boring fast?

Wish they expanded on this game, seems solid base to make a full hardcore campaign and more varied missions with ai.
It be so cool also to have a semi open rpg scifi with this base.

Loved the old space sims on pc long ago like independence war 1,2.

@Jtheripper If you're a solo player, then there's enough to like about Squadrons. The campaign will take you several sessions to get through, it's surprisingly substantial, and then you can muck about in practice modes and replay missions on higher difficulties and whatnot. From what I recall, the A.I. can be pretty challenging if you want it to be, but there are patterns that you'll start to recognise if you play it for long enough. The campaign is very scripted, but gives you a good idea of what to expect going forward.

Are you planning to play in VR, or on a television?

I've just checked your PS Store and can see its price. That's definitely in the right ballpark; I wouldn't pay any more than that. I'm in the UK and I paid £20 for my copy and, as a Star Wars fan first and foremost, I just about got my money's worth. Hope that helps!

Yeah, thanks, it's borderline price for me on that sale i guess. Might wait till it's 10, 15$, not sure.
No vr.

@Jtheripper Its full integration with PSVR is one of its biggest draws (apparently; I don't have PSVR myself) so yeah, if you're playing it "traditionally" then I wouldn't pay over twenty bucks for it. Had you been planning to play in VR then the immersion might've been worth a little more.

Ah I really wanted to like this, even subbing to EA Play to play it, but I just struggled to get into it. Battlefront 2's starfighter assault mode was more rewarding and better looking for me. Most of that might be down to the fact I can't do 1st person, though.
