Topic: PS5 Keeps Crashing

So I have had my PS5 for less then a month now. And this past day or two my PS5 all of sudden has been crashing nonstop. It crashes on the menu, in games, anything really. Sometimes it won’t crash for a while sometimes it will. I’m not really sure what’s going on. I have tried rebuilding the data base, restarting the ps5, but nothing is working.

I do have an External Hard drive though. Which I think might be causing the problem. When I looked up PS5 crashes a lot of them had to do with external hard drives. I have had my external hard drive plugged in since I got my console so it’s strange that it all of a sudden it stopped working. I only bought the hard drive a few months ago, so I hope it isn’t failing either.

But this is really frustrating. I can barely play my new console right now, without it crashing.

@TheOtherEden If you disconnect your external harddrive, does the PS5 still crash?

Unfortunately I had no choice but to start a repair order for my PS5. Shortly after I made this post, my PS5 stopped booting entirely. It was just stuck at the “processing” screen. It would go up to 99 percent and just stay there for hours. I couldn’t boot it in safe mode either because technically the console is all ready safe mode. So effectively my PS5 is bricked.

Which is just so unfortunate I barely had the console for that long. I didn’t even get to beat a game on it, but I guess now I just have to wait for like a month or so for it to get fixed. Hopefully it doesn’t take that long but still this just kind of sucks honestly. I finally got the Console and this happens .

@TheOtherEden That's unlucky but think of it this way: if it was faulty, it's actually better that it manifested straight away. I don't think it should take that long either.

it was the hard drive . and i’d recommend standing the ps5 upright next time . doesn’t look like it should even be laying horizontally despite the stand allowing it to .

@nomither6 Mine's been horizontal for over a year and I had zero problems, that's really not a thing.

You need to make sure a PS4 external HDD is plugged into the back of the console.
If it's in the front, the consle could crash a lot.

Yeah I don’t think it was the hard drive to be honest. I mean it might have been causing problems but I think the hard drive it’s self is fine. I just plugged it back in my PS4 which is I first used it in and it works perfectly. The Hard drive might have cashing problems with the PS5 but the drive it’s self definitely wasn’t damaged, at least I think so.

And also it’s a usb 3.0 hard drive so I could only plug it in the back anyways.

@Voltan i was suggesting it stand up-right . it’s advertised and designed upright , and the way the fans are designed looks as if it’s more suitable for the console to be vertical . a lot of hardware are upright , so i wouldn’t be surprised if the ventilation is better .

i also mentioned it because the xbox360 had problems laying horizontal and i believe disc scratches were even more common with it lying down , but again it’s just suggestion . you may not have problems with it lying horizontally , but that’s just your individual experience though .

out of curiosity , it would be interesting to know how many players had their consoles lying down when a lot of people were reporting crashes when the ps5 first came out

The whole thing is solid state the only thing standing it on its side or upright matters for is the way the heat flows and it’s been engineered to work either way. if you unplug your external hard drive and your PS five still crashes and doesn’t work then it’s a ps5 problem. Bummer about that but I’m sure Sony will take care of you.

Unfortunately they sold you a PlayStation with a bad hard drive. What you described I've seen on a dozen different PS5s. Pulling the internal hard drive and testing it on a PC always shows imminent failure, back up the drive if possible. Unfortunately not all hard drives are perfect and even though they are normally tested for about 6 hours, they are electronic hardware which no matter what,, can fail at any moment. Replacing the hard drive has always worked, same as the ps4s.
