Might be a stupid question. But I was just wondering if I took a ps4 and PS5 disc version of the same game and played the PS4 disc on the PS5 would it be the same as the PS5 disc? Say the new call of duty vanguard if I played the PS4 disc on the PS5 would I be missing out on anything graphical or frame rate wise or would the software be the same? I tried to word this best I could lol

@psnboybobby No, the PS4 and PS5 versions are different.

@psnboybobby I get what you’re saying and it’s different from game to game tbh. Not sure about CoD: Vangard but some games have no upgrade at all, some upgrade to the PS5 version… and others upgrade from PS4 but still aren’t quite as proficient as the PS5 version. Almost all PS4 games would at least play at the PS4 Pro version on PS5 at the very least though.

**** DLC!

I believe if the game has a free upgrade to ps5 then the ps4 disc would simply make u download the free ps5 version which would be the exact same as the ps5 disc..

Yeah, like @Camlambelot says, for games with a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade, you’re not missing out on anything by upgrading your PS4 disc to the PS5 version. It simply means you’ll have your PS4 disc in the console as a “key” to have access to download and play the full PS5 version of the game. It will be the same experience as playing the digital PS5 version of the game except it won’t boot up the game without the disc in there, and you’ll have to hear the disc spin for a few seconds when you boot the game.

For Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I had the PS4 disc(s) and the PS5 version played perfectly and beautifully in 4K, 60fps with all the graphical upgrades. In the case of that game though the DLC requires a separate purchase whereas buying the PS5 “Intergrade” version of the game includes the DLC.

(Edit: Incidentally — the PS5 version of the game was available to download and also to play whether I had the PS4 “data disc” in or the “play disc.” Either one works. So I guess you could cheat the system by giving a friend a copy of one of the discs and keeping one and both could play on PS5.)

In some ways then, for games with free upgrade to the PS5 version, it’s better to own the PS4 disc as it’s A) probably cheaper, and B) the disc can be played on PS4 also. Whereas if you buy the PS5 disc you can’t “downgrade” to play it on PS4. It’s kinda ironic that way. I think that’s why Sony is implementing and upgrade fee from PS4 to PS5 versions now, like Ghost of Tsushima has done.

No PS4 disks contain PS4 games and PS5 discs contain PS5 games. In the absence of an Internet connection the PS4 version is at the very least going to have longer loading times.

If you have an Internet connection you can sometimes download the PS5 version for free if you have a PS4 disc. But that’s not a given and you should check on the game by game basis first.

I case of CoD Specifically, the upgrade is not free - so if you put the PS4 disc in your PS5, your options would be:

  • play the PS4 version, which would run more or less like on PS4 Pro
  • purchase the upgrade and download the PS5 version, which will still require the PS4 disc to be in the console

This varies between games - some will let you upgrade for free (this means downloading the full PS5 game), others will just work better in backwards compatibility mode, and then there are games which will basically work the same as on a PS4.

Best advice is if you have a ps5, buy the ps5 version of a game if there is one available

If you use Fifa as an example, the two versions of the game are different. Some offer a free upgrade, some don't, it's a bit messy.
