Topic: Is The Dualsense Edge Honestly Worth It ?

If anyone here owns a Dualsense Edge, do you recommend it as a worthy upgrade to the regular PS5 controllers in terms of stick-drift? I purchased my 6th Dualsense because of the same stick-drifting issues(whether its usually the right stick, or left stick, i'm not sure anymore), and considering just getting an edge once this controller goes bad within 3-6 months. Is the dualsense edge my best bet if I prefer PS5 controllers for my games, but want more sturdier sticks, or am I better off buying regular dualsenses?

@nomither6 The main difference is that you can replace the Stick Modules for 'less' cost than buying a whole new controller ever 3-6 months. I don't believe they are any 'different' to a standard Dualsense in construction, but are designed to be 'replaced' should you experience problems such as Drift.

I can't say whether you would benefit more from an Edge controller or not - it really is dependent on you, your usage, the games you play etc etc. I know that when I play a LOT of CoD for example, I seem to go through more Controllers than playing other games - I think it's because of the Click/hold to sprint. With me, it seems the Left (move/click to sprint) thumbstick is ALWAYS the one to start giving me drift issues.

They are use the same stick module - not Hall Effect. However, with the Edge being designed to have Replaceable Thumbstick modules, its possible Sony could introduce a Hall-effect replacement module or the fact they can be removed, may make it 'easier' to modify with Hall Effect modules.

Again, I cannot say its a worthy upgrade for you. You maybe better off buying a 3rd Party brand instead if it lasts a LOT longer. I maybe 'cynical' but I don't feel most Controllers are designed for 'heavy' use and act as another 'revenue' stream - the Console may not make money, but selling you additional Controllers and other Peripherals constantly is....

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

Talking of stick-drift… and how people have mentioned that in the past that “we never used to have to deal with this…” I’ve been playing a lot of PS3 lately, and my reconditioned DualShock 3 is suffering with quite a bit of drift tbh. I reckon, we all just got on with it in olden days (like 15-20 years ago)… feels like I could use that phrase to cover a wide array of todays problems tbh 🤔

@colonelkilgore My launch DualShock 4 controller finally got a very mild stick drift in the last couple years. There’s a lot of mileage on that controller, as evidenced by the rubber on the sticks being partially worn off. And even then the drift was just on the right stick and only detectible during some games on some screens. Like you say, it was/is definitely tolerable, and that poor old DS4 owes me nothing.

@nomither6 You have either horrible luck, or are doing something differently. I have 3 DualSense controllers all which work fine with no drift. (I do think one of them has lighter haptics and adaptive triggers than the others, but not sure if it’s a defect or just normal variance) Granted one of them is a Spider-Man controller so is only a couple months old and very lightly used. But the other two are launch period controllers I got with the console. One of them I’ve dropped onto the hard floor a couple times too. Thankfully it didn’t seem to suffer any perceivable damage or loss of function.

I suspect you use your controller a lot more than mine, since my gaming time is limited to maybe 15-20 hours a week, max. Do you use your DualSense with your PC gaming? I wonder could that be affecting the longevity of the unit? I read somewhere that the stick drift is more about some software issues rather than hardware failure, but I don’t know.

Anyways, I don’t have a DualSense Edge, but fair warning — I heard the battery life is abysmal. Worse even than the standard DualSense. They may have corrected that though, not sure. My new SM controller definitely holds a charge longer than my other standard controllers

@Th3solution ahh that’s where we differ sol, I killed a ****-ton of dualshock4’s. I found that I pressed too hard on the R3 and ended up sinking the release-point of the stick… meaning that it always thought it was being compressed. I ended up having to spend £100 or so on a racon controller (which was worth every penny and the best controller I ever used… though my right thumb eventually killed that one too after about 5 years 😅). Hopefully my right thumb will start to chill out a bit as I inch towards retirement 🤣

@colonelkilgore The L3/R3 click has always felt rickety to me on all these controllers. Gratefully, I don’t play games that use the L3/R3 input very much. Just occasionally to recenter the camera, or pull up a sub menu or something. I guess FPS might use R3 a lot? Since I don’t do much FPS they could explain my fortunate lack of stick problems.

My two DS3 controllers never gave me problems either, that I recall. It’s been an age since I fired up the ol’ PS3, so who knows if they even work now. I’m scared to even try, because if the controllers are dead, can you even find new DS3’s anymore? Surely not. So I’d have to get some refurbished job or probably pay through the nose.

@Th3solution never dropped any of my dualsense controllers , i just get simple “wear n tear” issues from the sticks only; i primarily play FPS and Fighters. Yes i use my Dualsense with my pc but prior to pc , i went through at least 4 of the 6 controllers using it with my PS5. I forgot about the Edge’s poor battery life, but i mostly use the controller wired so it’s ultimately no issue for me; the only issue i care about is the inevitable stick drifting issue

@BAMozzy right , so i was thinking that it would be cheaper just to replace the sticks every 3-6 months instead of buying another controller. it’s fine if the sticks are still trash with the edge , i’d just like to save more money long term dealing with this

@Th3solution so you may recall (or maybe not… ) I had to find a new DualShock3 for Metal Gesr Solid 2 as the plat required the touch/pressure sensitivity of the ds3. I couldn’t get a one new… but was able to get a refurbished one from backmarket (great site btw).

@NeonPizza I still use my anniversary PSOne DS4 regularly, it’s a beauty. Sony definitely have some work to do on that front this gen, it seems you have pretty much anything you want with an Xbox lab controller.

@nomither6 Sorry to hear of your Dualsense curse (seems the appropriate word) my OG DS has recently succumbed to drift and I’m gutted. I’ve bought a midnight black replacement and sorting a fix for the other. I’ll definitely only be using for myself this time as my son used the OG for spider-man a lot so at the very least if it happens again I only have myself to blame. I hear the edge is a very impressive controller despite the initial outlay and the replaceable sticks is a boon. Good luck 👍

My son reported recently that our white controller 'wanted to go left' the other day - but didn't do it consistently. Given the lack of use that the PS5 has had (mainly thanks to the DS5 having 'issues' replicating the DS4's rumble), it's a bit feeble if it's started to drift already (PS5 was bought in June last year).

We've got 5 DS4s and 3 DS3s between us and none of those have experienced drift.
