Topic: Horizontal lines on screen when disc is inserted - PlayStation 2 car install

Hi all,

I recently installed a PS2 slim SCPH7000x NTSC-J into my car. The power supply is from a “XL4015” DC-DC buck converter set to 8.7v and a bootleg copy power supply I used the plug off of. The AV signal runs thru a genuine Sony cable to a Japanese Clarion MAX760HD head unit.

Whenever the console is booted up without a disc, the picture quality is perfect, all of the menu graphics and animations are smooth ect. However, the issue arises when a disc is inserted; which causes the picture to become distorted with horizontal scan lines that starts as soon as the disc starts spinning up and continues as long as the disc is inserted. The FPS or actual functioning of the game isn’t affected, only the video input. If I plug the console back into mains power the issue goes away.

To troubleshoot I checked the voltage stayed at 8.7v under load, checked the continuity and resistance was ok, and rerouted the AV cable away from any sources of interference but it didn’t make any difference.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Thanks

Well, there in lies the problem. PS2's aren't meant to be hooked up in a car. Not only is it dangerous and probably illegal, but there is no reason to have a PS2 hooked up in the car. If you want something for the kiddos to play games on, I suggest maybe a Switch Lite for those long car rides.
