Round Up: Reviews Dub Sonic 3 Movie the Best of the Trilogy 1

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 makes its debut in movie theatres around the world tomorrow, 20th December 2024, and the first batch of reviews recently went live. So, is it another solid family film, or is it a shadow of the past two films?

Fortunately, it sounds like Sonic 3 is the best of the bunch. While the reviews of course vary, the broad sentiment is that this third adventure, which introduces Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) to the story, tops the first two films.

Praise is also heaped onto Jim Carrey, who not only reprises his role as Ivo Robotnik, but also plays the part of Gerald Robotnik, Shadow's creator.

While some critics take issue with the large roster of characters and some formulaic writing, they largely agree that this is the best of Sonic's live-action adaptations yet.

Collider - 8/10

Jim Carrey is the real star of this trilogy. Carrey's signature brand of improvisational comedy serves him well once again here, as his gleefully cartoonish villain continues to be a highlight of his recent acting works.

The Hollywood Reporter - 70

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gets the job done, and should provide entertaining diversion for families during the holiday season.

Variety - 70

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is wired-up synthetic fun. It’s a trivial kiddie flick that moves at the speed of your mind playing video games.

Polygon - 63

The series may actually be subject to a bizarre formula: The looser and more disparate the parts of a Sonic movie are, the better the whole somehow holds together. At least that would explain why Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is, improbably, the best of the lot so far.

IGN - 6/10

Better jokes, better imagery, and two (!) inspired comic performances by Jim Carrey give this Sonic sequel an edge on its predecessors.

Total Film -

Far too many characters are vying for screen time in this predictably plotted sequel, but thankfully a weird, wild, and utterly brilliant central performance from Jim Carrey makes this a fun watch. A fine, wheel-turning instalment in a continually burgeoning franchise that will no doubt continue for many years to come.

Empire -

Slightly better than its predecessors, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 works hard to entertain — it has the odd bright moment — but overall lacks surprise, freshness or anything to set the heart racing. It’s a Saturday-morning cartoon writ long.
