Sonic the Hedgehog 3 makes its debut in movie theatres around the world tomorrow, 20th December 2024, and the first batch of reviews recently went live. So, is it another solid family film, or is it a shadow of the past two films?
Fortunately, it sounds like Sonic 3 is the best of the bunch. While the reviews of course vary, the broad sentiment is that this third adventure, which introduces Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) to the story, tops the first two films.
Praise is also heaped onto Jim Carrey, who not only reprises his role as Ivo Robotnik, but also plays the part of Gerald Robotnik, Shadow's creator.
While some critics take issue with the large roster of characters and some formulaic writing, they largely agree that this is the best of Sonic's live-action adaptations yet.
Collider - 8/10
Jim Carrey is the real star of this trilogy. Carrey's signature brand of improvisational comedy serves him well once again here, as his gleefully cartoonish villain continues to be a highlight of his recent acting works.
The Hollywood Reporter - 70
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gets the job done, and should provide entertaining diversion for families during the holiday season.
Variety - 70
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is wired-up synthetic fun. It’s a trivial kiddie flick that moves at the speed of your mind playing video games.
Polygon - 63
The series may actually be subject to a bizarre formula: The looser and more disparate the parts of a Sonic movie are, the better the whole somehow holds together. At least that would explain why Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is, improbably, the best of the lot so far.
IGN - 6/10
Better jokes, better imagery, and two (!) inspired comic performances by Jim Carrey give this Sonic sequel an edge on its predecessors.
Total Film -
Far too many characters are vying for screen time in this predictably plotted sequel, but thankfully a weird, wild, and utterly brilliant central performance from Jim Carrey makes this a fun watch. A fine, wheel-turning instalment in a continually burgeoning franchise that will no doubt continue for many years to come.
Empire -
Slightly better than its predecessors, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 works hard to entertain — it has the odd bright moment — but overall lacks surprise, freshness or anything to set the heart racing. It’s a Saturday-morning cartoon writ long.

I'm looking forward to seeing it this weekend, the first was decent and Sonic 2 might be my favourite video game movie and Jim Carrey seems to be relishing playing Dr Robotnik
My theater literally temporarily closed because of infestation and there’s none nearby for less than 45 minutes. I haven’t even seen Moana 2 yet 😭😭
I'll be seeing it Christmas Eve. Looking forward to it!

I'm sure I'll see it eventually, but I'm not really looking forward to Jim Carrey butchering Robotnik two different ways or Keanu Reeves making Shadow even more boring.
Taking my son to see it on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it 😊
Unrelated but I still can't get over that Fallout beat Arcane at the game awards...
@CWill97 infestation? Of what?
Rats?
Great series! Absolutely loved Idris Elba as Knucks and can't imagine I won't feel the same about the cat Keanu as Shadaloo.
@Enuo
Thank god ”Jom Carrey”’s not in this movie! That would have been horrible!
Seriously though, I didn’t think anyone in the world disliked Jim Carrey’s BRILLIANT performance in the two previous movies. Obviously there has to be someone, but man, he should get an Oscar for his performance in the first two. He makes both kids and adults laugh, and he’s been doing that for almost 40 years. He’s one of few. A real treasure he is.
Wonder how much Disney money has changed hands for reviewers to mitigate the drubbing Sonic 3 is gonna' give to Mufasa in the immediate future.
@RamboMike he's a bad actor, a bad person and he's giving a bad performance. Sorry to break it to you, but it's true.
@anoyonmus yep, I’m pretty sure. Not the best look for AMC I’d imagine
@Enuo Why is he a bad person? He's a bit eccentric and has the usual hollywood actor troubles, but it seems like he's tried to make a bit of peace with himself on later years.
Going on Saturday with my little one, we loved watching the first 2! Watched some of Knuckles, too, but, I found my interests dawdle a little with that.
@Enuo
Wow, you have a terrible, very uncommon opinion of Jim Carrey
@RamboMike Hi, I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey's performance in these films. Not that the performance itself is bad, but Jim Carrey only ever plays Jim Carrey, so I feel like the casting did a disservice to the character.
Forgot there was even a 2nd one. I might watch all 3 someday
