007 First Light’s debut demo left us both shaken and stirred.
You’ll no doubt be reading this breathless after Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, but we’ve had a little over a week to process our reaction to IO Interactive’s latest. In a nutshell? This upcoming effort, due out on 27th March, is sitting right at the top of our most anticipated PS5 games.
But first, a recap: you’re a youthful amateur James Bond up against the seasoned pro you’re to become. While the Danish developer glossed over the details during our behind closed doors presentation at Gamescom, we now know the villain of this original story will be 009, a wily MI6 veteran who’s learned all the tricks.
This premise is particularly exciting because we’re already familiar with the super-agent Bond will become from the various movies and Ian Fleming books – but how will a rookie overcome these seemingly impossible odds? That’s to be answered in the full release.

Our demo whisked us away to an elegant castle-like retreat among the picturesque Carpathian Mountains. While the craggy range spans multiple countries, IO Interactive referred to it specifically as Slovakia, so that’s the first passport stamp on this globe-trotting adventure. The studio also mentioned Iceland, among other destinations.
The setup here is that a chess tournament is taking place within the hotel, and Bond is acting chauffeur. His mission is not to infiltrate – he has allies within MI6 to do the hard work – but this is still the reckless charmer from the movies, so it’s not long before he takes a plunge into the deep end.

Driving is an important mechanic in 007 First Light, and so as the mission opens, you’re actually able to commandeer the limousine and soak in the scenery. It’s while you’re behind the wheel that many of the objectives for the mission are outlined, organically through some pretty engaging dialogue.
But as Bond witnesses some unusual activity involving a shady staff member, that’s where IO Interactive’s Hitman DNA takes over. Bond, restless and impulsive, decides to investigate against orders – and we’re told there are dozens of approaches you can take.

The puzzle-like infiltration mission that ensues is textbook Agent 47: Bond spots an open window into the building, but the area is heavily populated and forcibly guarded. Fortunately, a hosepipe, lighter, and wheelbarrow of leaves solve pretty much all problems – and so we were shown 007 tampering with the waterworks and setting fire to the discarded fauna in order to create a distraction.
Unlike in Hitman, where these clockwork-style conundrums are the entire purpose of the game, they’ll be just a piece of the puzzle here. However, we were told there’ll still be ample depth and opportunities to experiment with – it just remains to be seen whether the levels will be as replayable when there’s an equal emphasis on action.

Once inside the building, the estate reminded us a lot of the Parisian mansion from Hitman: World of Assassination; the attention to detail is extraordinary, with each room and corridor feeling like it has a purpose, from the bar in the foyer through to the small rooms occupied by guests.
Bond’s able to interact with some of the staff in order to get clues, and while the dev was keeping the rest of the mission under wraps for our demo, it’s easy to see how the Hitman playbook will be fully explored as you unravel exactly what’s going on within the estate.

But as we alluded to earlier, this game is more than a mere re-tread of Hitman, and so as we’re fast-forwarded later into the mission, we see Bond in all-out car chase – flanked by an American counterpart with a common goal. It’ll be interesting to see how the pair’s relationship evolves over the course of the campaign.
It’s also going to be fascinating to get a feel for these driving sequences; it’s not something the studio’s ever really done before, so this could easily be a weak point if the studio hasn’t invested adequately into the vehicular handling.

To be honest, we’re curious how much autonomy you’ll actually have over the car, as we imagine these sequences will be largely linear – perhaps comparable to the infamous jeep set-piece in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. It certainly looks that way, as Bond’s funnelled down a road to a nearby airport, where the on-foot action takes a different tact.
This is the part that really blew us away: IO Interactive has made third-person shooters before, specifically Freedom Fighters on the PS2 and Kane & Lynch on the PS3 – but this was a true spectacle.

As 007 arrives at the airport, an epic shootout ensues, with Bond dodging and weaving between different points of cover, as he picks off goons. The action looks like Uncharted, but it’s even more chaotic, with explosive fuel containers in the background erupting into enormous infernos.
Bond is also augmented with a number of bespoke combat animations, as he rushes into enemies, tumbling over ledges while beating them up. It all looks so dramatic and dynamic – the kind of thing we’d expect if Uncharted had received a native PS5 entry by now.

But it doesn’t end there, as 007 ends up chasing down a plane on the runway using passenger boarding steps, before picking off a few more goons on the wing as it takes off. From there, it’s a shootout inside the plane, before Bond skydives back to ground – by way of a parachute he pluckily pinches from a fellow falling foe.
One neat detail in the airplane sequence is that James taps into the flight controls, and you have to manually maintain the balance of the vessel while you’re making your way through its insides. The dev suggested there are many more one-and-done mechanics like this in the full game, so we’re excited to see what else it’s come up with across the rest of the campaign.

And that’s the thing: this is just the first stage. We’re assuming IO Interactive’s showing this off because it encapsulates all of the main mechanics the studio’s constructed, but we can certainly imagine how some stages may lean more into the Hitman-style stealth while others tilt more towards the action.
We are curious how replayable the game will be: the real beauty of Hitman was repeating the same level over and over, evolving your mastery of its mechanics. With the addition of action and car chases here, we wonder whether those aspects will retain their staying power while you explore the sandboxes elsewhere.

But for now, we can comfortably say this is up there among our most anticipated PS5 games by quite some margin. IO Interactive appears to have blended the best of Hitman with the bombast of Bond, and does it honestly get much more exciting than that? Time will ultimately tell if 007 First Light can hit its mark, but the Danish developer certainly has the pedigree to pull the trigger on something truly unforgettable here.
So, after this brief glimpse, do you share our enthusiasm for 007 First Light? Do you think this rookie Bond will be able to live up to the legend? And what aspects of this IO Interactive effort are you most looking forward to? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and join the debrief.

As I said on the other article, I do really like the mixture of gameplay styles and the potential for replayability but my big concern at the moment was that performance and god awful motion blur. If that can be toned down and there is a good performance mode, then I'm on board
Though Resident Evil is currently the most exciting game for me next year at the moment
@carlos82 yeah resi 9 looks outstanding. agree about the motion blur I don't usually have the best eye for that stuff but it was really distracting and looked pretty detrimental to the experience. other than that the game looks awesome!
Exciting isn't the word I'd use. Intriguing maybe, but that's it. Ultimately, this looks like Uncharted by any other name, and all the pretty graphics and big set pieces can't cover up the stiff animations and weird UI. This game just looks like it's not fun to play.
I'm not going to write it off entirely, but as another international man of mystery once said, this sort of this isn't my bag baby.
Different strokes for different folks and all, but this is definitely not the most exciting game of 2026 for me. Maybe the demo you got to experience was more polished than the one we all saw.
Looks pretty good I'll keep an eye on this hopefully it's a start of a great franchise of games 👏🙏✌️
The mansion really reminds me of the Sniper Assassin level from Hitman 2 more than anything. I trust IO completely, if anyone can pull it off then it’s them. Naughty Dog have sh*t the bed when it comes to PS5 so honestly I don’t care about comparisons to Uncharted, the series might as well be dead outside of inevitable remakes and remasters.
(Also is that tagline alluding to The Hitman and Her or am I mad)
Pragmata’s topping my list for 2026 right now, but this one does look worthwhile.
@somnambulance I watched some extended gameplay of the the other day and it looks really good
Despite the differences highlighted in the article, it seems like this is basically Hitman 4, but with a James Bond skin. I don't mind, since I love the Hitman series, but I don't think this is necessarily a 007 game except by the game title. I guess if you like Hitman games, then you'll like Hitman 4, oh sorry, 007 First Light. If you're not a fan of Hitman games, then you'll probably not like Hitman 4, oh sorry, Agent 47: First Light, oh wait, what was this game called again?
I like Bond in general. And the combat looked fun, stealth play very much Hitman-like and environments look nice. Didn't like the low FPS, looked like sub 30 FPS and the usual "IO Interactive ugly faces" on most humans.
This game looks absolutely awesome. I think they’ve cooked up something that will turn out great. I do hope those fighting sections can maintain a smooth 60fps, because that will be delightful.
Still 6 months to go and this looks more polished than stuff the gets released. Framerate will for sure be improved in the coming months.
I find it quite refreshing that a developer is showing the game with its flaws, and not putting loads of cuts and edits to mask them.
Driving and shooting from IO Interactive?
So... it sounds like Minds Eye, amirite?!?!?
(I'm kidding, of course)
"Why 007 First Light Is the Most Exciting Game of 2026"
That's quite a statement and prediction @get2sammyb
That level you got to play must be pretty special.
I love the recent Hitman trilogy, but I don't really think it's gameplay is all that well suited for a 007 game, and it's concerning to see that it is basically the same.
But my main issue is the driving - it seems to have that stupid steering mechanic where you're either going straight ahead, or your in a drift, and that is not enjoyable at all, for me at least.
My biggest issue is the look of the main character tbh. Maybe I'm too old for being the target audience. It feels like they wanted a young Brosnan-Bond, but I like the adult version receiving Double O status, like in Casino Royale, more. Battle-hardened to a degree, being a vet already, then specializing as top secret MI6 spy.
This is one of my most anticipated games for the coming year to be frank. Only... I want to have it on my Switch 2 😁 But will for sure keep my eyes peeled on the reviews to judge which version to get in the end.
This is a dev to trust and the game is already in good shape considering its 6 months out.
I like Bond, I love uncharted, so this is right near the top of the wish list for me.
The hitman elements concern me the only walking sims that click here are in moonboots but it was very scenic all the while .. once that car revved up it really took off; what a thrill ride kid does appear a bit of a stiff though we shall see how it develops.
Not hating on this game as it will probably be pretty good, but it’s so far from being the most exciting game of ‘26 for me I had forgotten this existed until I saw this article.
I am very hopeful for this game. As I can’t really enjoy first person shooters (but grew up with goldeneye), the 3rd person bond games were pretty much the only shooters (well also gears of war) I played. (Everything or Nothing is still my favorite action game with guns.) So this plus the Hitman DNA means the game should be fun. Performance will decide if I buy it twice or not. Also, love M and Moneypenny.
Also hoping since this isn’t tied to an actor that they will make a few of these. I don’t like bond but I like his adventures/games.
The first thing I noticed was that the steering wheel in the Jaguar XJ was on the wrong side for you Brits.
@Kriandis it would be right hand drive though unless they imported a Jag from the UK 🤷
Young Dexter as 007. Good for him!
009?
Should have been 006, so that Sean Bean gets to die in video games as well.
I cannot for the life of me get excited about this game. It just looks like another 3D action-adventure AAA game. I don't know if I'm just getting old, but these games all look the same to me now. This looks like Uncharted, and Metal Gear Solid, and Hitman, and Indiana Jones... It's all so boring to me now.
This game looks crap imagine wasting a whole state of play on this oh wait...
@RPG121 ???
Look at the gameplay at the plane part 007 fps
Far from most exciting game in 2026. Theres plenty of more exciting things to come.
It looks pretty solid but "the most exciting game for 2026"? Yeah nah. So far Onimusha and Pragmata looks much more exciting to me.
absolute zero interest. completely jaded of these type of games & it doesn’t help that too many games look the same these days with the same boring sterile realistic look . how does this games graphics look any different than mafia old country, hit man WOA, AC Mirage, etc
i’m looking forward to ninja gaiden 4, borderlands 4, marvel tokkon, and sonic crossworlds - oh, and also waiting for doom dark ages to go on sale for cheaper
@Enuo What kind of games do you people like?!? .... this is why devs don't want to make anything new.
This actually looks great, I cannot wait.
I think I will enjoy GTA 6 more than any other game this gen, but First Light will be a day one buy, though.
My top anticipated games of 2026 are:
1. GTA 6
2. Crimson Desert
3. 007 First Light
4. Fable
5. Bus Bound
6. Road Kings
7. Lego Batman
8. Star Wars Zero Company
9. The Blood of Dawnwalker
10. Pragmata
Outside contenders based on release date:
Wolverine, Gears of War E-Day, Clockwork Revolution, New Forza Game, New RGG game, New Game Freak Game.
I'm not a Resident Evil fan, but that is also another big game for 2026.
And that's what we know about.
If 90% of all those games stick to a 2026 launch date, it will be one of the greatest gaming years in modern gaming.
I still need to play the Hitman games (old and new), but loved what today's State of Play showed off.
I'm a big James Bond fan, have seen every single film since GoldenEye.
It not worth wasting a state of play on this game should be sonys exclusive games end of but this game looks good
Hands down my most anticipated upcoming game. Today sealed it.
@get2sammyb did you get Untitled Goose Game vibes? That was my first thought when Bond gets to actually start doing things to upset the guards and staff 😁
And I mean that in a very positive way 🪿
Good grief, the motion blur in that 5th screenshot is horrific. When a static image almost triggers my epilepsy there's zero chance I'm buying your game!
Gameplay wise this is exactly what I wanted in a modern Bond game. Feels like a modernized version of the PS2 007 games.
Hey @get2sammyb , was this a hands on demo or a developer walkthrough? I can't tell from the article and you don't mention.
From the way you've written it, it sounds like a developer walkthrough but I can't be sure.
Really unimpressed by the gameplay and the performance was awful - even though it was a demo. Low framerate, poor graphics (especially character faces), janky gameplay. Overscripted car pursuit scene feels a lot like Mafia: The Old Country.
NPC's AI looks dumb - setting a wheelbarrow on fire makes the person next to it blindly stare at it and nobody else from security is alerted? And he can just move along the building wall unnoticed by anyone?
During fight enemies just run at him or aim at him without shooting giving him time to throw his shotgun at them or take their gun... Cars explode just from a little gunfire.
Honestly the only thing I liked was multiple conversation options. Didn't really spot what the options were but it gives me hope there are multiple ways of approaching missions.
@carlos82 this is exactly the comment i was about to make, to me it is a new Hitman game with a very elegant skin + some sort of action shooting like we can see in Uncharted games
BUT
wtf is this motino blur and frame drops... i hope we can play 60fps and turn this off even on normal PS5
Nah, Resident Evil Requiem is my most wanted game of 2026 so far. Despite liking the last Hitman trilogy/World Of Assassination this doesn't feel like Bond. The lead isn't giving me 007 vibes for one let alone it looks a bit watered down likely like the next Bond movie will be. Is that the guy from Dexter Original Sin? If so despite liking that series again he isn't an ideal choice to play Bond either.
It's a run of the mill AAA slopfest, don't make me laugh.
@Ravix That goose game is on PS Plus always been tempted to try it might give it a go today now.
007FPS, more like
Yes this is more exciting than RE9 and GTA6... sure it is.
Had it been Hitman 4 I may have bothered to watch the video. But a James Bond adventure? Huh? Not for me thankyou.
Is it, though? Not likely at all.
@AndroidBango (#47) 😂😂😂
Looks great, with no Uncharted due this might fill that gap, I don't like the films anymore but IO are a safe bet, should be really good.
Agree with others though, not my most anticipated for 2026 but it does come out on my birthday so could be a day one!!
@Jammer haha it is well worth it. Premise is basically the same, wander about and look for ways to mess with people. I think the AI in Goose Game is a bit better than in Bond, though 😅 (noticed that the dude just stares at the tap ad infinitum 😬)
I swear I like different games than 98% of people on here. Thought it looked great and preordered as soon as it went live. GTA is still my most anticipated but I don’t think that will be as good as previous as so many of the original devs have left. Time will tell
Currently Pragmata is my most anticipated game of next year I’ve been interested in that since the day it was announced a few years ago, it’s also one of the games I bought my PS5 for originally.
Not really a James Bond fan so I’m not sure if I’ll be getting this game anyway
@darylb24 and thats only scratching the surface
the guys in the airplane little before take off
-hey there's some guy try to jump in the plane in motion, lets go out in the roof and kill him, sounds like a good idea
It looks pretty good to me. But there are a few possible red flags. Are there in fact many ways to complete a mission and make it replayable, or is it more of an Uncharted clone. That's no bad thing, but does make it less of a day 1 buy for me if true.
And while the opening mission looked impressive, showing off the different gameplay elements, most devs push far more in these areas to draw in gamers but then often the rest of the game is less exciting.
Hopefully neither of these are true, but i'll wait for reviews.
I just got around to watching the preview this morning. I have to say, it looks fantastic. Yes, it looks and feels like an Uncharted game, but we haven’t had one of those in years and I’m all for it. It has the perfect blend of Uncharted and Hitman, and that plane sequence was awesome considering you’re controlling it whilst simultaneously running and gunning. There were a few frame rate drops, but the developers have plenty of time to iron out the kinks before release date. I can’t wait.
@themightyant In the video they discuss how you can complete missions in different ways, similar to the Hitman games.
@Kraven They do... but it's a story based game, will it work so well when all the story beats are the same and the main goals are the same. It seemed very Hitman-lite. A much smaller sandbox. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does make me personally less likely to buy day 1 if so. Hopefully they just demonstrated this poorly.
I was hyped for the game, that SoP changed my mind, not in a good way. Not overly interested anymore. Will keep my eyes on the game but at the moment the only 2026 release I'm super interested in is Resident Evil Requiem.
I hope it's similar to hitman where each objective has multiple ways to be completed
Why do i want a new Syphon Filter now.😅
I do understand the hate towards the game. Its looking like this already and they have time to polish. I have seen finished games that look worse now.
@themightyant That are lot of assumptions so far? I dont like James Bond and im even stoked for this one. Now Sony should let them make a Syphon Filter game.
This game will feature different bond skins through the ages! As paid dlc, prediction given!
I suddenly would get very excited about this james bond game if Ioi adds (or announces the) VR mode ...
@The_Elder absolutely agree with you, not sure I'm seeing the same thing as others here who are so excited and hyped up by that gameplay footage - looks super janky with some terrible-looking character models to boot, almost like a PS1 game with PS4 graphics - will definitely need to see this again nearer the time of release
Hood ornament? I thought James Bond was British?
@Flaming_Kaiser Absolutely I am making a few assumptions based on what they showed, it looked good to me, but it also didn’t bowl me over. Ultimately I hope my worries are unfounded and it’s brilliant. Time will tell.
I was not impressed.
@themightyant Bear in mind that 007 is licenced (no pun intended). That licence alone will restrict what you can do with that character
Agreed, actually something that interests me, in the sea of crap that gets released.
I expected a lot more 'bombast' in that car chase. It's impossible not to compare it to the now iconic Uncharted 4 chase and it feels a bit tame in comparison.
