Gearbox Software has revealed a Borderlands 4 deep dive via Sony's own State of Play format, with over 20 minutes of PS5 Pro gameplay showcased. Check it out above.
Footage covers exploration of the open world as well as a portion of a mission, before diving into combat, the new Vault Hunters, and character customisation. There'll also be three new gun manufacturers for a total of eight in the game. The fourth entry seems to be calling on Destiny 2 a little, with random events in the open world.
The story setup from the PlayStation Blog is this: "In Borderlands 4, we’re dropping you into the middle of Kairos, an all-new planet rife with warring factions, deadly fauna, and desperate inhabitants. For thousands of years, the oppressive Timekeeper kept the planet hidden, controlling its inhabitants with cybernetic implants called Bolts and an army of synthetic soldiers known as The Order."
Borderlands 4 comes to PS5 on 12th September 2025. What did you think of the State of Play showcase? Share all your thoughts and reactions in the comments below.

That live stream was way better than I was expecting after the 3rd game. I have gone from a ‘check it out sometime’ to a Day 1 purchase! Looked awesome actually! 😄
The game looks fantastic and big step up, definitely day one for me. From watching the stream you can tell they have took inspiration from Destiny but it doesn't take anything away from what makes Borderlands fun to play.
Not bad at all, never played a Borderlands game before, but this looks pretty good!
Now give us the showcase we’re really waiting for, Sony 🤩
It looks really promising and definitely one of those times where my cautious optimism turned into something more definitive. The gameplay looked tight and slick on the Pro. The level we saw looked more bleak and realistic, the glide mechanic looked a bit off but only because it's from a first person perspective, dynamic weather and dynamic events are something I didn't expect. Nor was what they call 'Big Encore' meaning we can farm bosses more easily. The weapon customization looked fantastic as did the overhauled loot system, skills and traits.
I didn't expect couch Co-op either (something more games need to do) It looked a lot more like the first two games, which is what I'd hoped for but never expected. I'm sure folks will still find something wrong with it but as a looter shooter it seems to (from what they showed us) do exactly what it's meant to do. Thanks for hosting the Livestream.
Never been into BL but this number 4 looks good.
Was running on Pro and looked sharp, clean and smooth even on the streaming.
When they showed video gameplay the game looked good but when they showed actually people playing the game it looked dated
If only Sony did a showcase for its first party games
Looks fantastic, might have to be day one for me as well!
Interesting, might give it a try since I have one of the originals I think that I have never tried but I'm not really into these floaty/jumpy type of FPS game's these days.

Loved the first two games, but haven’t touched Borderlands in ages. This was a fantastic State of Play; game looks awesome and may just get me back into Borderlands.
I enjoyed 1 2 & 3, but that looked mid af. If there's really only 4 characters to choose from and no returning character who can get a mech, that's a huge loss. The chick with the mech from B3 is really fun to pilot. Hopefully 4 is actually planning on being more grounded story-wise. But essentially all the movement additions were the big focus here, but they're just bringing it up to the same movement mechanics that Titanfall 2 & Doom 2016 had. Double jump, Dodge, slide, hover. I need more. I bet they did pull the release date forward because of GTA6...
I loved the first two games, but Tiny Tina was awful and BL3 was just ok, this didn’t show me too much to be excited for. Sadly i think my Borderlands days are over. But there is plenty to play this year with all 3 consoles having solid lineups.
From what I've seen it looks like they might have dialled back the obnoxiousness and returned to what made the first one so good. I'm cautiously optimistic.
If Ava is still a character in 4 I'm not buying
Borderlands is back baby.
@zhoont did you miss the part where Randy said "4 characters at launch"? Launch is the key word, meaning extras will probably come later. Looks like they're serious about this game this time, and are throwing everything at it.
I think we all just need to come to terms with the fact that this IP is DOA now. Completely creatively bankrupt; mind you I only played 1 & 2, but I just can't see how this franchise still somehow has a place. It looks so dated.
This looks MUCH better than BL3, love that they’re returning to a more grounded tone and no more awful “streamer villains” in this game.
I just hope it strikes a different tone. It wasn't just "that just happened"/MCU writing, it's like BL3 was the middle school kid that needed attention so would never. Shut. UP.
Wait, the State of Play was today? Haha!
@Shokwave2 dawg once the 1,000,000 DLCs come out I will have moved on to GTA6 and Battlefield 6 and all the other unplanned games that will capture my attention. My interests in this game extend to what I can experience in it between its release and the release of Ghost of Yotei
@LikelySatan They did say that they'd reduce the toilet humor so we'll see. BL3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands had some of the WORST humor in the series.
Borderlands 4 looks amazing.it definitely gonna sells a lot.word up son
To be fair, it looks really good. Much better than Borderlands 3.
That showcase quieted a good amount of my concerns with the game. Raffa looks very interesting to me in particular. Don't even think I remember seeing that character in the teaser trailer.
Good call not showing cringe humour. Focus on the game.
@zhoont moze- my main in bl3 and the only good reason for me to play as I overboosted.
Forgot all about the direct, and I'm a bit sad there's no similar character if true, but I'm a bl player through and through, good times and bad and I'm sure I'll find a main that I love eventually.
I think sticking to 4 to begin with is fine - any more will blatantly come with the directors cut etc, and I'm fine with that, as its been the standard of bl now for a while.
As a massive Borderlands gameplay fan, I thought this looked a bit slow and janky, hopefully it’s smoother in time. Could probably help if the person playing was competent and/or turned up their controller sensitivity.
Surprised to see the comments here, but glad it’s getting positive attention.
Just caught up with this and as many others are saying, this looks way better than Borderlands 3 from a character and tonal point of view and they even have a Vault hunter that I want to play as again. I've always played as the Siren and the new one looks great.
This has gone from me not caring, to I might actually have to play this
