Update []: Well, I was right: August's Game of the Month vote was a close call.

But while the likes of Star Wars Zero Company, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and Mortal Shell 2 all battled it out between one another, it was actually Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 that crept along unnoticed.

Indeed, this is the kind of support that an incredibly unique and memorable game like Metal Gear Solid 4 can provide. Finally free from its PS3 shackles, it simply couldn't be stopped.

Nearly 700 votes were cast across 14 different PS5 games, but none could quite compete with Konami's latest Metal Gear bundle.

Here are the top five PS5 games of August 2026 according to readers of Push Square:

  1. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 - 167 votes (25%)
  2. Star Wars Zero Company - 108 votes (16%)
  3. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy - 105 votes (16%)
  4. Mortal Shell 2 - 95 votes (14%)
  5. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls - 74 votes (11%)

In hindsight, Master Collection Vol. 2 was always going to find a good deal of backing. When it comes to beloved franchises and deeply invested fans, Metal Gear can be difficult to top.

And of course, it helps that both of the included games — Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker — remain fantastic experiences in their own right.

Reviewer John Cal McCormick put it best: "The nanomachines, the fashion model robot monsters, the flamenco dance battle, the fried eggs, the cigarette smoking underpants monkey, and that ridiculous final boss, all running at 60 frames-per-second and looking better than ever. This is good, isn't it?"

Here's hoping that Snake has room for our Game of the Month trophy in his retirement home.

Original Story: Hmmm, it feels like August could give us one of the tightest Game of the Month votes that we've had in quite some time.

That's mostly because there was no standout AAA heavy hitter — no massive release ready to crush the competition.

Don't get me wrong, August still had a healthy smattering of 'big' games, but I do think a good number of them will end up cannibalising each other when it comes to the public vote.

Indeed, last month saw the launch of some highly rated PS5 titles, the top dogs including Mortal Shell 2, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and Star Wars Zero Company.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls hit really hard with critics as well, although fighting games always have a tough time with these Game of the Month polls because of their niche nature.

It's possible that Big Walk has a shot here; the quirky indie adventure, which launched straight onto PS Plus, attracted a huge number of players. It's been a bit of a viral success story.
