Author Profile

Stephen has been part of the Push Square team for over six years, bringing boundless enthusiasm and a deep knowledge of video games to his role as Assistant Editor. Having grown up playing every PlayStation console to date, he's developed an eclectic taste, with particular passion for indie games, arcade racers, and puzzlers. He's also our go-to guy for Sonic-related matters, much to his delight/chagrin.

I've been playing games for as long as I can remember, and growing up I always loved reading about them in magazines. I hoped one day I'd be able to write about them myself, and Hookshot gave me that chance, for which I'm very grateful. I have a very eclectic taste (and particularly love the diverse and innovative realm of indie games), but I’m always interested in the next big thing as well.

Experience

Stephen got his start in 2015 writing reviews - and occasional news - for Push Square.

This eventually led to a full-time role as Senior Staff Writer in 2018, while in 2019 he became Assistant Editor for the site.

I really enjoy reviews in particular. I feel as though I've built up enough skill and knowledge that I can critique games fairly, and it's always good to exercise that muscle.

There's also something very satisfying about drawing up a guide campaign. Initially it can feel disjointed and haphazard, but when it all eventually comes together you feel like you've really created something.

Features are harder to nail but can be as rewarding as anything else - if not more so. Interviewing developers you admire, gaining first-hand access, creating something truly unique. There's a lot to love about them, and they allow you to really put your stamp on the site.

Timeline

  • 2015: Begins his career with Push Square as a reviewer
  • 2018: Joins the site full-time as Senior Staff Writer
  • 2019: Becomes Assistant Editor at Push Square

Expertise

Stephen’s first console was the mighty Sega Mega Drive. From there he owned every PlayStation, both PlayStation handhelds, and a selection of Nintendo’s finest hardware to boot.

Although he finds it hard to pick a favourite, he’d choose the PlayStation 2 if he had to! This was the era where he really started getting into games properly, and it was the first console he personally owned too - it felt like a proper step up. Oh, and it has some of his favourite games too, which always helps.

My favourite genre will change every day of the week, but right now I'll say puzzle games. The genre is incredibly broad and there's little more satisfying than being presented with a problem and finding the solution yourself.

Many games have puzzles in them of course, but the ones that hone in on the concept are some of my favourites: Portal 2 (and 1), Return of the Obra Dinn, and Arranger from this year.

The puzzle genre also includes stuff like Tetris and Lumines, which are just endlessly enjoyable for me.

Stephen’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Stephen to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Serving Up Aloy of Food with the Official Horizon Cookbook

“I was super pleased with how this feature turned out. We were offered a copy of the book for review, but Sammy and I decided to make it a more original piece by having me make a selection of the recipes myself. It was hard work but a really rewarding experience that resulted in one of my best features.”

Best Dreams Games to Play While It's on PS Plus

“This is the culmination of all my work covering Dreams. I've been one of the games media's biggest advocates for this game, and have tried to draw attention to it since before its launch. This feature brings together my coverage of Tren, numerous recommendations of other Dreams games, and lots more - there's loads to dig into here.”

Gallery: Here's What Our Community Thinks PS5 Will Look Like

“This remains one of my favourite features I've ever done. Before we knew what the PS5 looked like, I challenged our community to come up with their own PS5 designs, and it got a great response, making for a silly, fun piece that’s totally unique to Push Square.”

  • Review Rock of Ages II: Bigger and Boulder (PS4)

    Boulder dash

Rock of Ages II: Bigger and Boulder is one of those games that, on paper, sounds like it shouldn’t work. A sequel to 2011’s Rock of Ages on PlayStation 3, this title is a blend of tower defence and physics-based racing/platforming, all under an aesthetic that immediately brings to mind Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python animations. If...

  • Soapbox Pixel Art Is Prolific, and That's Pretty Great

Stephen loves modern gaming's diverse art styles

Video games have been around for a while now. We’ve now reached a position where children who played, and were inspired by, games such as Pac-Man, DOOM, or Super Mario Bros are now making games of their own. Chris Davis, creator of The Escapists, puts it like this: “I also happen to be a big...

  • Review Patapon Remastered (PS4)

    Pata-pata-pata-pun

Patapon Remastered shares some of its DNA with two other re-released, obscure Japanese games from Sony. Like PaRappa the Rapper, its gameplay boils down to following the beat of the catchy music, and its cutesy vector art style is similar to LocoRoco. It does plenty to set itself apart, however, with a rhythm/strategy combination...

  • Review Cars 3: Driven to Win (PS4)

    Rocky road

Pixar’s Cars movies are widely regarded as some of their weaker works, but they probably have the most straightforward path to gamification. Cars 3: Driven to Win is a simple arcade racer, featuring characters and locations from the films, and it’s almost exactly what you’d expect. However, the amount of variety and fun on offer...

  • Review Micro Machines: World Series (PS4)

    How the tiny have fallen

It feels like Codemasters has been testing the water for a potential return of its much loved matchbox racing franchise. A few years ago we had Toybox Turbos on PlayStation 3, which was a Micro Machines  game in all but name, and a fairly good one at that. More recently, a Micro Machines mobile game popped up, and...

  • E3 2017 Check Out 11 Explosive Minutes of Matterfall Gameplay

    Looks like a blast

Matterfall was given a very brief spotlight during Sony's pre-conference E3 show. The gameplay trailer shown off gave us a glimpse of what to expect from Housemarque's latest, but it perhaps didn't get across the structure of the game itself. In the video above, however, IGN speaks with associate producer Jari Hokkanen while...

  • E3 2017 PS4 Blast-'Em-Up Matterfall Looks Promising in New Gameplay Trailer

    Well, shoot

Sony unveiled our first glimpse at Housemarque's latest arcade shooter, Matterfall, during its pre-conference showcase. It seems that a key aspect of the gameplay will hinge around creating and destroying...

  • E3 2017 Ubisoft Debuts Far Cry 5 Gameplay in New Trailer

    Amazing grace

After a somewhat controversial game reveal last month, Ubisoft has now treated us to the first gameplay trailer for Far Cry 5. In it, we see two players coordinating an ambush on the cultists as they terrorise some captors. A fully co-op campaign is a big feature of Far Cry 5, which Ubisoft is clearly keen to highlight. We also see...

  • E3 2017 The Crew 2 Looks Like an Automotive Playground on PS4

    Land, sea, and air

Ubisoft has shown off a new cinematic trailer and the first gameplay of the sequel to its online multiplayer racing game, The Crew. It seems that they'll be upping the ante this time around, however, as you'll not only be competing on land, but also in the water and in the sky.  The gameplay teaser shows off a little of...

  • E3 2017 Ubisoft Announces Multiplayer Pirate Game, Skull & Bones

    Black flag

Remember Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag? Remember how the best bit about it was navigating the high seas with your scurvy-laden crew, and getting into naval scraps for treasure? Well, Ubisoft Singapore does, and Skull & Bones is precisely that. The big difference, though, is that this new pirate adventure is set in a shared...

  • E3 2017 Devolver Digital's Tongue-in-Cheek Presser Is Well Worth a Watch

    Check a look

Hot on the heels of Bethesda's E3 conference came Devolver Digital's segment on Twitch, where it promised a "ridiculous" show with "no game reveals". In all fairness, it delivered exactly that. The conference, put together by a company called Imagos Films, was no more than 15 minutes long, but was packed with satirical moments, such as...

  • E3 2017 DOOM: VFR is Coming to PlayStation VR This Year

Take a guess what the F stands for

During Bethesda's E3 press conference, it highlighted two virtual reality titles it has in the works. DOOM: VFR is a made-for-VR game with the trademark lightning quick and bloody gameplay you know and love. Better yet is that it's heading for PlayStation VR later this year, as well as HTC Vive. Bethesda did also...

  • E3 2017 Death of the Outsider Is a New Dishonored Adventure

    Killer

Bethesda just announced Dishonored: Death of the Outsider at its short E3 showcase, and you can find the trailer embedded above. • E3 2017 EA Announces New Co-op Game A Way Out

    Prison break

One of the only new IPs announced during EA's press conference was A Way Out, from the man who brought us the emotional gut punch that was Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It's a narrative driven co-operative game in which you and another player take control of two convicts, Leo and Vincent, with aspirations of breaking out of prison...

  • Review The Town of Light (PS4)

    Old haunt

It is perfectly clear, right from the pre-game warning screen, that this is a game that won’t be pulling any punches. The Town of Light tells the tragic tale of a teenage girl, Renée, suffering mental illness inside the walls of an early twentieth century Italian asylum, and while the characters are fictional, everything else is based...

  • Review DiRT 4 (PS4)

    Riding DiRTy

DiRT Rally was a real breath of fresh air when it released on the PlayStation 4 last year. It was celebrated for its razor sharp focus on the sport, as well as its challenging and fulfilling gameplay. Codemasters stripped away the excess and released a lean, mean, and unashamedly hardcore rally game – and it was great. With DiRT...

  • Review Black & White Bushido (PS4)

    Stab in the dark

The title says it all, really. Black & White Bushido is a monochromatic multiplayer game where samurai of light or shadow duke it out in two-tone arenas. Developer Good Catch has ported its game over to consoles after an 18-month stint on PC, and with its unique gameplay, it could well slot nicely into gaming nights with a few...

  • Review LocoRoco Remastered (PS4)

    Roll up, roll up

Whether we really needed a remaster of an 11-year-old Japanese PSP game is debatable, but we’re elated Sony decided to update one of the platform’s greatest hits nonetheless. LocoRoco Remastered brings the joyful 2D side-scroller (or side-roller, if you will) to a whole new audience, and the best news is that its still as fun...

  • Review Birthdays the Beginning (PS4)

    Life finds a way

Birthdays the Beginning is a pretty strange title for a pretty strange game. It’s a god game in which you manipulate a cubic world in order to create new lifeforms. As far as elevator pitches go, it doesn’t sound terribly interesting, but it does just about enough to hold your attention – if only for a short time. You...

  • Review Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (PS4)

    High above the mucky muck

The Wonder Boy series was one of the Master System's most beloved franchises, though its cult-classic status hasn't prevented it from falling by the wayside. A convoluted history, including a tangle of complications regarding the rights to the series, meant a comeback would be virtually impossible. In spite of this, a tiny...
