Katsuhiro Harada, director and producer of the Tekken series, has announced he'll soon leave Bandai Namco.
The news comes as the fighting game franchise reaches its 30th anniversary. Harada has worked on every game in the series, with his career almost entirely focused on it over three decades.
"I felt this was the most fitting moment to bring one chapter to a close," he writes in a lengthy statement about his departure. He'll leave Bandai Namco at the end of 2025.
Harada explains that seeing friends and colleagues around him retiring and even passing away, he began to think about his own time left as a creator, and sought advice from former PlayStation CEO, Ken Kutaragi — "whom I respect as though he were another father," he says.

Harada explains that he's "gradually handed over" all his responsibilities over the last few years to the Tekken team.
"To everyone who has supported me, to communities around the world, and to all the colleagues who have walked alongside me for so many years, I offer my deepest gratitude," Harada concludes, adding that he'll share what he'll be doing next at a later date.
A separate statement from the official Tekken account thanks Harada for "providing us with vision and continued success over the years", and explains that work on Tekken 8 and the future of the franchise will continue.
In addition to his work on Tekken, Harada has contributed to the likes of SoulCalibur, Ace Combat, and even PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale in a supervisory position.
He's a legendary figure in the world of gaming, and while it sounds like he's not quite done yet, his 30-year body of work at Bandai Namco is a remarkable achievement. It'll be interesting to see what he does next.

Have a nice retirement.
Can I have Soul Calibur 7 now.....?
Good, 8 is the worst game in the series.
Wow, end of an era.
@MrPeanutbutterz I will add to that, and say the heat system is one worst systems ever implemented into a fighting game.
Waffle House can now be added
Without being sarcastic, I suppose this is a good thing?
To be honest, as a casual player I didn't like the newer entries as much as the older ones. I'm more of a Tekken 3 type of guy.
Another end of an era. Regardless of how one feels about Harada, the man did work hard all these years. I wish him well at whatever he will do next.
I thought he already retired after Tekken 7, before 8.
@Czar_Khastik
I think that is a criticism that can be levelled at most fighting games these days - they are just not very good for casual fans.
I have played many across the years, but I do not have the time, or inclination, to study/practice 1 character to that degree anymore.
I thoroughly enjoyed SF6 (which I bought on sale) purely because of the World Tour mode, but other than this I think fighting games in general have forgotten what made them 'fun', and got lost in a quagmire of balancing and layered systems.
Bring back the Bloody Raw games and let me turn into a werewolf before smacking my human sized Rabbit opponent 30ft through the air!
The end of an era, may he find happiness now that his work is over.
@Rich33 You said it perfectly, this was exactly my point. I find it great that people can professionally compete at these games but for a casual player it is not very enticing to have this many layers of gameplay. I genuinely miss those older titles (e.g. Def Jam is one of my all time favorites). But it's good to see that I'm not alone in this.
End of an era...
Despite some of his blunders for Tekken 8, all his contributions made Tekken a very popular and one of the biggest fighting games series ever.
So, salute for Harada and i hope he enjoyed his retirement 🫡👏
@Oram77 Sadly the series is officially dead brother. Harada was the only person in Bamco who cares about Soul Calibur. With him left the company, the series will be buried deeper.
@MrPeanutbutterz Not when Tekken 1, Tekken 4 and Tekken 6 exist.
Seriously anyone saying Tekken 1 is better then any other entry loses any right to comment on the matter.
@Czar_Khastik
You are certainly not alone in this, but I do worry that we are 'too far down the rabbit hole now' and things will likely get worse, for a while at least.
Looks like I’m in the minority as someone who loves Tekken 8 and will be sad to see him go.
He will be missed, but he definitely deserves a happy retirement. One of the best characters in game development, and one of the most open directors with the community. Here's hoping that his successor will be able to continue his legacy.
@DennisReynolds I mean, Tekken 1 is obviously jank by virtue of being a 30+ year old game and the birth of the series, but it was a much better game and coherent experience back then vs. what T8 is offering today.
@Oram77 Agree completely. The Heat system is straight up doggy doo doo.
I don't recall any of my childhood devs actually retiring. They tend to open new passion studios and expire on said endeavor.
Good for him. Tekken wasn't ever one of my favorite fighters out there but Harada always demonstrated a clear passion for his work. Stuck with it for 30 years! You don't do that unless you really love it.
Good luck to him in whatever he does next. Maybe he could go over to Team Ninja and get DOA back in business!😄
Good on him, I cant imagine having to work on a product for that long.
@DennisReynolds Tekken 1 was the first PlayStation game to shift over a million units and pulled 8's and 9's across the board upon release.
You cannot judge an old game using modern eyes.
And as for Tekken 4 being a bad game that is internet revisionism. It ALSO scored 8's and 9's across the board upon release and won E3's best fighting game of the year award.
It is impressive with how long he's been working on Tekken. Like others said, end of an era.
Good luck to him. I hope he enjoys his well deserved retirement. Ps Tekken 6 is the worst game in series!
@MrPeanutbutterz No it wasn't. Tekken 2 made the series not T1 a game that was always considered pretty ass.
@LifeGirl Where did you pull the T1 reviews from? Tekken 4 might have done well with critics but the playerbase found it a massive downgrade from T3.
Also if we're doing reviews and awards well T8 is 90% on MC and multiple best fighting game awards.
@DennisReynolds The reviews are from Wikipedia.
30 years wow… I know there has been some controversy with Tekken 8, but I’m sure most of us here has some good experience with the Tekken series throughout out its run. Good for him on his retirement, he put in that work. I wish him the best.
@LifeGirl @DennisReynolds Tekken 1 was pretty ass? Funny, reading the magazines back in 1994/5 (yeah I'm old) said otherwise. See LifeGirl's comments. And my own subjective experience of it. I played the arse out of Tekken 1, and that was after I got Tekken 2.
Street Fighter 1 - now that was ass. Tekken 2 and 3 were perfect sequels, but the series arrived fully formed with Tekken 1.
Sounds like a good time for Bandai to make some HD collections of Tekken and SoulCalibur till the next thing lol
"TEKKEN" nice vacation man. You've earned it^^
@MrPeanutbutterz Yeah Tekken 1 was ass. There's a reason no one will ever go back to it but happily do Tekken 2.
Good, maybe we’ll actually get TIFA in TEKKEN in the future instead of two Final Fantasy characters that would have fit better in SOULCALIBUR
