Ubisoft is trying something new with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, giving players a choice between two modes of play at the start of the game. One is 'Guided Mode', and the other is 'Exploration Mode'.
Regardless of which mode you choose the actual content of the game doesn't change, but your journey through the open world may differ massively as a result. Guided Mode is a "more traditional experience", the summary reads. "Markers are displayed at all times, and objectives are given to you automatically." In other words, this is the standard Assassin's Creed-style structure, with objective markers telling you exactly where you should be going.
In contrast, Exploration Mode won't give you markers to chase -- you'll need to hunt down your objectives and really explore the world in order to discover what you should be doing next. This might include talking to non-playable characters or simply wandering off on your own to find a lead. "The user must investigate the world to uncover targets and quest objectives," the description reads. "This is the way Assassin's Creed Odyssey is meant to be played," apparently.
It's an interesting approach, and yet another recent example of games giving players more freedom. Which mode will you be choosing? Get out and explore the comments section below.

If the game is made with explorer mode in mind, then that's great! I've noticed that turning the objective marker off in open world games only leads to confusion, often because the game isn't made with that in mind. You kinda have to rely on the markers to find the precise location. BOTW didn't have objective markers (at least, not in the traditional way), and exploration felt more natural because the game was fine-tuned to that.
Not sure if this will actually work or just mean we spend even more hours wasting our time. I miss the older proper AC games.
Could be good or bad. If it it’s like Morrowind with actual directions you can follow easily enough, that’s fantastic, if it just removed the markers instead, that’s an awful idea...
@kyleforrester87 Check this out. You’re hatred of pointers may be helped!
This game apparently has upwards of 100+ hrs of gameplay, so I can't begin to imagine how long it would take to complete if you have to explore to find content.
This would appeal to me massively about 10 years ago but my gaming time has reduced dramatically in the last couple of years, and with a baby on the way it's only going to get smaller. It means that seeing something like this is quite intimidating now - so I'll take all the hand holding I can!
This sounds interesting. Might start with explorer mode and see how it goes, so long as you can toggle it back on whenever.
This sounds great, please make things visually interesting and reward your exploration with stuff that's fun!!!
It's about time games started doing this again, instead of just joining does together. I long for games which make you explore their worlds without constantly holding your hand along the way, all of a sudden I'm a lot more interested in this game
My only concern when games do this (and I do think it's a great thing, by the way) is that they'll alienate folks who have limited gaming time per week and a backlog the size of all outdoors. If people expect something of an established franchise, it's a risk to change too much at once.
Having both options is great for those with plenty of time or who don't mind playing the same game for several months, but it'll be interesting to see which one is default (because very few people actually tweak options before jumping right in to new games).
This coming from somebody who's never played Assassin's Creed, but wishes the series all success and is considering playing Odyssey.
Sounds interesting, I'd be willing to give it a go on my first playthrough for the first hour or two just to see how well it works and if it's not my cup of tea then I can just start a new game in the regular mode. My guess is the mode is going to be locked and can't be changed mid game...
@hadlee73
you missed out on a fantastic game with origins
