While many titles offer great online experiences, nothing quite beats local multiplayer together with friends and family in the same room. Finding the right game can quickly turn four best mates into mortal enemies, or turn the group into a hysterical mess of laughter, screams, and joy. Luckily, the PS4 has enjoyed a bountiful resurgence of such titles. Particularly in the indie space, developers have brought a wide variety of offline multiplayer games to our beloved black box. From stone-cold classics to utterly unique hidden gems, here's a list of titles to play with others that'll get everyone leaping out of their seats with excitement.
Publisher: Game Swing
Developer: Game Swing
Release Date: 5th April 2016
This crazy, chaotic dodgeball game seemed to come out of nowhere in 2016, offering up a fast-paced, grin-inducing spin on the sport. Up to four players can duke it out in teams or in free-for-all as they aim to smack each other out of a selection of unusual arenas. The controls are very simple but there's just enough nuance to keep things competitive, and the whimsical presentation will keep the laughs rolling.
9: Worms W.M.D
Publisher: Team 17
Developer: Team 17
Release Date: 23rd August 2016
We couldn't not include a Worms game on this list, and Worms W.M.D is the best available on PS4. With gameplay that harks back to the glory days of Worms: Armageddon, this is the classic turn-based invertebrate warfare you know and love with a new, cartoon-like lick of paint. It doesn't add much to the established formula, but there's a reason these games are still around - this is excellent fun with a couple of friends.
8: That's You
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Wish Studios
Release Date: 4th July 2017
Sony has been making a concerted effort to make gaming more accessible with its PlayLink titles, and our pick of the bunch is That's You. Using smartphones as controllers, a group of players is asked questions about each person, naturally leading to some hilarious outcomes. You'll also be snapping selfies, drawing on each other, and second-guessing your opponents as you strive for victory. A great game for the non-gamers in your life.
7: Gang Beasts
Publisher: Double Fine Productions
Release Date: 12th December 2017
This bizarre brawler was a long time coming. Announced for PS4 years before release, Gang Beasts is finally out, and it's mad, scrappy, and sort of genius. You and up to three others control a primary coloured, gelatinous Beast, and your aim is to eliminate the other players from the myriad unusual levels by any means necessary. The results can be uproariously funny, with wacky physics causing all sorts of slapstick mayhem.
Publisher: Clever Endeavour
Developer: Clever Endeavour
Release Date: 12th December 2017
How can you go wrong with a name like Ultimate Chicken Horse? This is a 2D platformer with an ingenious twist - you build the level as you play it. Laying down traps and obstacles may slow your opponents down, but you'll have to navigate them too if you're to win. There's a great sense of strategy to this title that balances perfectly between careful planning and royally screwing everyone over.
Publisher: Jackbox Games
Developer: Jackbox Games
Release Date: 26th November 2014
This is a collection of clever party games you can play with your smartphone with up to seven others, depending on which game you pick. With a selection of highly popular titles like Drawful, Fibbage, You Don't Know Jack and plenty more, there's more than enough here to keep everyone entertained, and almost endless potential for laughs. Split into four 5-game collections, The Jackbox Party Pack should be on any social gamer's party plan.
4: Nidhogg 2
Release Date: 15th August 2017
The first game laid down an incredibly solid foundation of frenetic fencing mixed with tug of war, but Nidhogg 2 adds a sprinkling of extras that make it even more entertaining. With a striking new art style, lots of new weapon types, and a much larger roster of levels to fight through, this sequel has plenty to keep you busy. Face off in one-on-one duels, or use the tournament mode to see who among your chums is truly worthy of being eaten by a giant sky serpent.
Publisher: Psyonix Studios
Developer: Psyonix Studios
Release Date: 7th July 2015
We can't talk about couch multiplayer without mentioning Rocket League. Up to four players can play offline in split-screen, and the football-with-cars action is as immediate, tense, and brilliant as ever. After several huge updates, you're not just limited to football, either - variants on ice hockey and basketball, as well as the floor-smashing Dropshot, should keep you and your buddies glued to the PS4 all night.
Publisher: Team 17
Developer: Ghost Town Games
Release Date: 2nd August 2016
This title from just a two-man team was a very pleasant surprise when it launched back in 2016. This cooperative cooking game requires some serious team work as you race against the clock to meet the demands of your hungry clientele. The game features extremely simple controls, allowing for the whole family to get involved, and the various kitchens are devilishly tricky, demanding you work together, lest the kitchen be set ablaze by forgotten soup. A true delight.
Publisher: Matt Makes
Developer: Matt Makes Games
Release Date: 11th March 2014 (NA), 19th March 2014 (EU)
Of all the great offline multiplayer experiences to be had on PS4, this is the one we always return to. TowerFall Ascension's bow and arrow combat might be simplistic, but it's endlessly entertaining and has enough depth that you'll be discovering new little tricks hours into your playtime. You can play cooperatively as well as competitively, too, which offers up a whole other challenge should you ever grow tired of the latter. This is everything a couch multiplayer game needs to be, and more besides.
