Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is out and it’s pretty disappointing, which means that it’s now time for the inquest to begin. And right on cue, industry sleuth Liam Robertson has uploaded a video outlining some of things that went wrong with the crossover brawler’s development. The information apparently comes courtesy of Capcom employees, but while the source does have a very good track record, it’s always worth erring on the side of caution with stories like this.
Nevertheless, the things that Robertson reveals are quite eye opening. He claims that the superhero sequel was developed on a budget less than that assigned to Street Fighter V’s DLC team. It’s unclear whether he’s referring to a single season of Street Fighter V support or the lifetime investment that Capcom’s putting into its flagship fighter, but either way the sum is likely to be frighteningly low for a modern PlayStation 4 game, which would explain a lot.
There are a lot of reused assets and animations in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which is the kind of corner cutting you’d associate with a shoestring budget. According to Robertson, upper-management just didn’t care much about the game until Chun-Li’s face became a source of ridicule; it then poured a few extra resources into the project to get it fixed up before launch. DLC characters like Monster Hunter were apparently finished months ago, but removed from the final release.
Again, while we haven’t been able to verify any of this information for ourselves, it all sounds fairly feasible to us. To be honest, though, it’s actually increased our appreciation of the game – like, the core fighting is pretty decent all things told, and if it really was developed on a budget smaller than some DLC packs, then that’s kinda impressive in a roundabout way. Still, this game should have so easily been a slam-dunk – only Capcom could cock up a crossover featuring one of the biggest brands in the world.

Whats that Capcom, things were going right ?
What with Resident evil 7 and the like.
Well hey, here look at that, two feet and a loaded shotgun.
Really disgusting that Capcom keeps doing this. 3 out of 3 fighting games this last few years have had content pushed back as DLC and low budgets.
Gettin' sick of being blatantly nickle and dimed, And that makes me want to support them less.
Hmm interesting - Capcom are seriously in disarray. I think they have talented devs but their decisions and expectations are all over the place. They fluffed up the SF5 release but then did a blinder over Resi 7 only to then be disappointed it didnt make their quite outrageous sales targets. Who signed off Umbrella Corps? Who took another flagship title and gave it less budget than a standard DLC package? Their output is more uneven than my MP skills.
Well then, I guess I won't buy it until a complete edition drops at a price lower than SFV DLC.
This game just can't - and shouldn't - catch a break.
After the stunt they pulled with SFV they should've learn their lesson, say what you like about Injustice 2 but that is how you do a true sequel.
@Bread-Not-Toast To be fair that game had a huge budget behind it, Capcom in recent times clearly don't have the resources to justify making the games that people expect.
Capcom fighting game team is really underwhelming this gen.
I am surprised that Disney doesnt care since this is their brand after all.
@sinalefa because we know Disney make their bank on the Marvel Movies. Do IN A WAY, I'm not remotely surprised.
This is not surpising in the least if found true. I was excited for the game, but upon playing the demo i thought to myself..."How much did they spend making this, and is it being rushed to Market?" We will see this as a PS Plus game in about a year.
To be fair the SF5 game got less funding then the DLC. 😀 😁 😋
