Official Dynasty Warriors 9 news is coming our way on the 11th May, but as predicted, the usual Japanese gaming publications - namely Famitsu - have leaked the goods before the designated date. The latest issue confirms that Koei Tecmo's long awaited sequel is a PlayStation 4 title, and there's some talk that it's going to be exclusive. We can certainly see that being the case in Japan at least.
As we've known for a while, Omega Force's next hack and slasher will incorporate open world elements. We thought that could just mean much bigger battlefields to wage war upon, but apparently you're going to have the whole of China to explore as one gigantic map. This completely open structure will supposedly allow you to alter your tactics on the fly. For example, you could attack an enemy fortress from high ground if there happens to be a mountain nearby. There's also mention of sneaking into bases and eliminating your targets quietly.
The workings of the world itself sound quite in-depth. Virtual China will have its own dynamic weather system, with conditions such as rain and fog making it easier to get the jump on your foes. As far as structure goes, it sounds like you'll be able to pick and choose your own missions. Main missions will advance the Three Kingdoms timeline, while completing side missions will allow you to lower the difficulty of important battles. Apparently the combat system's getting a rather dramatic overhaul too, so we're looking forward to seeing how that turns out. Much requested warrior Cheng Pu will also put in a playable appearance.
All in all it sounds like Dynasty Warriors 9 is taking the series in a largely new direction - we just hope that it doesn't take Omega Force several sequels to get the formula right.

To play Devil's Advocate:
"The latest issue confirms that Koei Tecmo's long awaited sequel is a PlayStation 4 title, and there's some talk that it's going to be exclusive. We can certainly see that being the case in Japan at least."
Hyrule Warriors and FE Warriors don't count as a good working relationship with a system currently selling like hot cakes in Japan that appeals more to that market?
But its good to see DW9 finally become a thing. How long has it been rumoured now?
Just...no OmegaForce voice acting...
I'm already hyped for this, currently playing hyrule warriors legends and waiting for fire emblem warriors to release, I hope dynasty warriors 9 will come to switch, if not I just buy it on ps4. Also I hope the open world aspect doesn't competely erase the old gameplay, I hope it either gets mixed or seperated.
This sounds like it could be very interesting, I wonder what the new combat system will be like. I do actually enjoy the traditional musou gameplay, as simple as it is - hopefully they'll be adding depth but not turning it into something completely different.
@BLP_Software - I can't see this coming to the switch - If anything it will be PS4 and PC - although it it stays a PS4 exclusive then that's pretty good I guess, been a while since we have had a Koei Exclusive in the DW series. Personally, all you see in the steam comment sections on a new DW or SW game or spin off on release is people complaining about the performance and the DLC that has come out etc... Plus looking at steamspy, the games don't seem to sell that well on PC vs console anyway.
Going back to the switch though - Dragon Quest Heros barely runs on the switch - 30fps as standard dropping to a hard 20fps lock in every singe battle - I hope they find a way of optimising Fire Emblem Heroes/Warriors otherwise it may be the first KT game I don't buy on release. Compared to the PS4's locked 1080/60, even on base hardware, I couldn't play DQH2 on the switch - it was like playing Hyrule warriors on the original 3ds.
I can't wait for more information to come though though - I liked what they did with DQH2 by making it more of an adventure than just a musou game and how Toukiden has both missions and just randomly walking around the world fighting Oni as you come across them. It will be interesting how they pull this one off - I'm guessing a hub area with links to other hubs which have their own mini-open world with 'triggers' to start missions based on that story line. Anything else would feel a bit too far from what DW is.
Also, I don't think DW9 was ever just a rumour - they announced it ages ago via the Koei twitter with an image and saying it was coming 2018 I think it was. Either that or late 2017. The tweet was from dec-feb time I think. It was never a rumour though - even though the title of this article does sound a bit like it was, I think they just mean confirmed for PS4 only or something.
@Turniplord 17th Dec it was announced via a live stream and posted on the various Koei twitters: https://twitter.com/koeitecmoeurope/status/810099732353843200?lang=en-gb
@Turniplord Yeah, it was announced ages ago - headlinesis in reference to it being confirmed for PS4. Platforms weren't officially confirmed previously, even if PS4 was obvious.
@ShogunRok Thought thats what it meant - although, tbh, I clicked the article because I thought it meant it was 'announced' at first and I was was like "hmmmm, thats not right".
I knida knew Vita was gonna be skipped, but its nice to see PS3 is being skipped as well, means it will be on a brand new engine or maybe the DQH2 one? If it is then I kinda don't want it on the switch as it will look and play pretty bad and obv it will look great on PC (usually PS4 assets so they look the same) but PC will probably be announced closer to the time if they do decided to bring it out on steam. I highly doubt this will touch an MS console though.
@Turniplord It definitely sounds like an ambitious project - I imagine they opted for PS4 because they need the horsepower. Omega Force has been dabbling more and more in bigger game worlds, though. Dragon Quest Heroes II was big, like you say, and Toukiden 2 has a pretty huge map as well. Be interesting to see how it all turns out.
