What could have been

BioWare fans need no excuse to lash out at their favourite developer – but they almost got one anyway. According to Geoff Keighley’s The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3, the developer was originally toying with the idea of releasing a standalone first-person shooter set in the Mass Effect universe.

That game eventually became Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer component – but it could have been so different.

Keighley reports:

The goal was simple: to create a standalone multiplayer experience in the Mass Effect universe that would mix the play styles of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943 — and likely be released as a downloadable game.

Mass Effect does have a very interesting universe that would create an interesting backdrop for a first-person shooter. The question is: would anyone want to play it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
