Of Course There's A Future PlayStation Platform In Development.

It's as obvious as the sun-setting. But up until now, Sony has not acknowledged a new home console in any way. That changed this morning, when Sony mentioned a "future platform" at its financial meeting for investors.

Sony’s VP and CFO, Masaru Kato, mentioned the "future platform" when asked to explain the company's increased R&D costs.

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life,” he said, “but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

The next PlayStation has probably been in development since the specifications of the PlayStation 3 were finalised, but this is certainly the first time the platform holder has acknowledged it. Earlier in the year Kaz Hirai said a "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now". We said at the time he was lying through his teeth.

Personally, we don't want a new PlayStation until at least 2013. But that doesn't mean we don't want Sony to be working on one for when we're ready.
