Clutching At Straws: Mass Effect 2 Source-Code Hints At Playstation 3 Version

Mass Effect 2's Source Code Hints At A Playstation 3 Version.

If you ever wanted to clutch at straws regarding the release of an “exclusive” game, then now is the time. A cracked piece of Mass Effect 2 source code seems to retain two-lines of code retaining to the apparent existence of a Playstation 3 version of the game.

Source code from the PC version of the game, reads:

[SFXGame.BioSFHandler_CharacterR?ecord2]
m_nMaxRenegade=1900
m_nMaxParagon=1957
m_srXPFormat=340881
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessageXBox?=348754
m_srParagonRenegadeMessageXBox=3?48755
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePC=3?48753
m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePC=348?755
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePS3=?348755
m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePS3=15?3007

You’re looking for the bottom six lines of code, each belonging to the “XBox”, “PC”, and – whut? – “PS3″ versions of the game. At the very least, if not a coincidence, this means there is a PS3 version of the game somewhere. Of course, it could be mean nothing at all.

We’re still holding hope for a Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2 blu-ray compilation pack a little later in the year. EA may aswell, it’ll surely sell a million or so copies.

    They'd need ME1 ported too though. I've played the first one through twice on PC, and I'm still struggling to remember all the backstory. But PS3 owners would lap ME2 up if they got it, it is fantastic.

    "So unless EA have a deal with MS which prevents Mass Effect from EVER appearing on PS3"

    Even if they did then Bioware could just release a "Mass Effect Perfect Edition" which include all the DLC. A simple name change would be enough to classify it as something different.

    it is NOT EVER GOING TO PS3 if you would have done 10 minutes of research before posting this stupid story you would have found this out...

  • @Guy - fair enough, I'm not a programmer. I still withstand that unless EA hate money, or Microsoft's paid them extortionate amounts, that this is coming to PS3 at some point.

    Sorry, try again. They did NOT say it's never going to PS3. They said "it's for 360 and PC." Note the wording, as in that is what it's currently available for. And notice how BioWare only puts this on a forum for Mass Effect players and then locks it down without elaborating further. This statement was only released by their forum community guy too, he's no programmer. Not to mention EA, who in the end have the real say so as to whether or not there will be a PS3 version, have simply replied "no comment". If there truly was never going to be a PS3 version, they should say so. Flat out, no bones, say "ME2 will never appear on PS3". They continue to refuse to do so and use clever wording to avoid the issue.

    The Unreal Engine deals with the Paragon and Renegade calculations that are specific to Mass Effect? No
    The Unreal Engine auto generates message settings for multiple platforms so the developers don't have to do it manually multiple times? Yes

    Mass Effect might come to the PS3 in the future, but I highly doubt this is an indication (chances are slim considering the fact that Microsoft was the one publishing and financing the original game). You can probably find similar auto generated code in Gears of War or any other exclusive UE3 engine based game.
  • The Unreal Engine deals with the Paragon and Renegade calculations that are specific to Mass Effect? Erm - nope.

    EA owns the IP. A Mass Effect compilation on PS3 would sell AT LEAST a million copies if handled correctly. That's roughly $50million of REVENUE on the table for EA, and with the game already built and designed I'd hazard a decent level of profit (especially with the game being Unreal Engine, thus easy-ish to port).

    Whatever this code means, I bet you it comes.

    The Mass Effect series is one of very few exclusive 360 games I'd be interested in if it came to PS3.

    But where has this news come from? Is there any evidence whatsoever that this is actually code from the game? Anyone could type up code such as this and say "I found it in game X".

    That said, unless they know absolutely 100% that a game won't be released on a particular format, I'm sure 3rd-party devs code all versions pretty much simultaneously. For example, I'd put money on the recently announced PS3 GTA IV DLC having been coded alongside the 360 version, and simply held back until the exclusivity deal with MS expired.

    So unless EA have a deal with MS which prevents Mass Effect from EVER appearing on PS3, you can pretty much guarantee that PS3 versions of both games already exist somewhere.
