"you don't see studios and publishers complaining about this"
I wonder what would happen if you actually polled the people who worked there and created the art instead of prioritizing the opinion of executives who only see their customers as a piggybank.
@LogicStrikesAgain Your argument of "Sony needs to do this to continue to run a sustainable business" would make more sense if they didn't continue to set an ocean of cash on fire in order to desperately bet on making some infinite-money-generating live service slop game. Which, despite the money that's been wasted, they claim they are not giving up on it.
Really, this decision is pretty similar. At this point, they know a sizable amount of their customers don't want physical to be discontinued, yet are actively choosing to throw them under the bus to bet on making bigger profits with a smaller group of people. Which, maybe it pays off for them, but it should be another sign to anyone that they do not care about what their customers want and will do as they please if it makes them an extra dollar, so buyer beware; they should not be trusted, and probably hate you.
Ultimately, discontinuing physical will not solve Sony's problems. Sony's issue for a while now has been that they fundamentally don't understand what makes their brand and platform appealing. They want their brand to be an elite, expensive platform that you're willing to fork over a crazy amount of money for. This is what they tried to do with PS3 and the famous "599 US DOLLAR" meme, resulting in them losing ground to Xbox 360, so they pivoted. Now they are back at it again, doing the same thing, except worse.
There is no wise decision making going on here. It is just greed and hubris by detached CEOs who fail upwards into their positions and are obsessed with financial spreadsheets and AI. They do not care about the health of the games industry and more than likely are the least qualified among us to be running Sony.
Note if I sound heated, this isn't necessarily targeted at you. Moreso I really hate these people who are in charge and don't really believe they have honest or sincere intentions at all.
