This a great improvement. Finally, MKV support. I had to put custom firmware on my PS3 to watch MKV, eventually resulting in a console/psn account ban when I synced Gran Turismo 5 trophies even though I was playing from a legitimate GT5 disc. Disappointed that there is no FLAC support for audio files though, but my AV receiver can play those so it's not a huge deal.
Didn't particularly end up mattering as that PS3 ended up with a YLOD I couldn't repair and ended up in the cabinet with my other YLOD PS3. Never got another PS3 as they can't play PS2 games anymore and there is very little left on PS3 that I want to play that I don't believe will get a PS4 remaster. If they shipped PS3s with PS2 compatibility still I would go out and buy one today as there are still a lot of PS2 titles I want to play. And once I had one there are a few PS3 games I would pick up.
