Much like Nintendo's Game Key Cards, an empty box holding a used cardboard code fails to satisfy the tactile feedback that comes from the act of physically opening a case and transferring a disc or cartridge to and from a console. The action may seem minor or irrelevant, but there's a joy to interacting with unique physical objects that is being actively and carelessly eroded by discontinuing physical media.
It's the same reason some people prefer to read physical books over using e-readers. Physically turning the pages and using a bookmark/dogeared page/putting the open book face down/whatever, serves as a physical representation of one's intent and progress.
Physical media takes up space in one's life, and interacting with it is an experience people don't want to lose.
