Isn’t it interesting how conventional wisdom from social media – usually massively influenced by Steam concurrent users – would lead you to believe a game flopped, only for the reality to be quite different?

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been tagged as a slow seller, but it did well in the recent PS Store sales charts, and has worked its way into third position in Circana’s August report, which tracks physical and digital sales for the US marked.

We do know the Arc System Works brawler has sold slower overall in Europe, but I wouldn’t say this is a disastrous result for the game. I don’t think anyone realistically expected it to place higher than NBA 2K27 and Madden NFL 27 – the two titles it’s behind in the abovementioned report.

PS5 had a complicated month.

It was the second best-selling console behind the newer Switch 2, but it actually enjoyed a 17% increase in dollar sales year-over-year. This is likely due to price increases, as unit sales were down 11% year-over-year.

It’s a weird situation because despite registering its worst August since 2013 in terms of raw unit sales, the PS5 actually generated more money than a year ago. Both the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S declined year-over-year in both dollar and unit sales.

I don’t think there’s much else interesting in analyst Mat Piscatella’s report, although he does note that the Midnight Black PS Portal was the third best-selling accessory of the month, with sales of Remote Play handhelds up 39% year-over-year. The peripheral continues to be a surprise success for Sony.

I’ve included the appropriate charts below, but do keep in mind that Circana now relies quite heavily on projected sales, with major publishers like Microsoft no longer providing official data to the aggregator.

PlayStation, for what it’s worth, is the only platform holder now being fully transparent about its US sales figures. I wonder how long that will last?
