Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary: The Crystal Edition — a 16-track series-spanning album that's out in January.

Hold on, 16 tracks? Is that all? Yep, it's made up of just one track per mainline Final Fantasy game.

I can only imagine how difficult it was to decide which music ultimately made the cut. After all, these are some of the most iconic soundtracks in gaming.

As such, I can certainly see fans questioning a few of these choices — although personally, I think it's actually close to being a definitive list.

The track list is as follows:

(I've linked official YouTube videos to each track name.)

  1. Main Theme (Final Fantasy)
  2. The Rebel Army (Final Fantasy 2)
  3. Eternal Wind (Final Fantasy 3)
  4. Theme of Love (Final Fantasy 4)
  5. Battle at the Big Bridge (Final Fantasy 5)
  6. Searching for Friends (Final Fantasy 6)
  7. One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy 7)
  8. Force Your Way (Final Fantasy 8)
  9. Not Alone (Final Fantasy 9)
  10. Zanarkand (Final Fantasy 10)
  11. Ronfaure (Final Fantasy 11)
  12. The Dalmasca Estersand (Final Fantasy 12)
  13. Blinded by Light (Final Fantasy 13)
  14. Torn from the Heavens (Final Fantasy 14)
  15. Somnus (Instrumental Version) (Final Fantasy 15)
  16. Away (Final Fantasy 16)

Currently, the album's only up for pre-order in Japan, but I assume that'll change in the very near future, as Square Enix's product page already has links to its North American and European online stores.

It'll be available on both vinyl and CD, priced at 8,800 yen (about $50 / £40) and 3,960 yen (about $30 / £20) respectively.

So, what do you make of the track list? Is it to your liking? Tell me what you'd do differently in the comments section below.

Is the album's track list on point?
