When it rains it pours – and Sony’s probably going to need a new umbrella at this point!
In an embarrassing strike against the platform holder, hobbyist PS3 emulator RPCS3 has added physical Blu-ray support, meaning you’ll be able to play the vast majority of your last-last-gen games on the PC – directly from the disc.
You will need to own a compatible disc drive, and you can find a list of supported models through here. There are quite a lot of options, so you should be able to source something that works.
Previously the emulator required you to dump the game files from your legally owned games, but now you can just play them straight from the Blu-ray, like god intended.
Obviously this is not intended as an attack on Sony, but as it plans to kill physical media in January 2028 – and switch off the PS3’s online storefront next summer – it does all look a bit embarrassing, doesn’t it?
As things stand, you can’t currently play any of your PS3 games natively on the PS5, outside of PS Plus Premium cloud streaming. (Which at least is unlimited for now.)
RPCS3, meanwhile, supports over 75% of the console’s library, including landlocked titles like Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time and inFAMOUS 2. And now you can play those favourites straight from the disc!
Please pay attention to what fans are doing, Sony – and try a bit harder!
