Resident Evil 2

The new Resident Evil movie from Zach Cregger is on course to become the series' biggest film ever, and that success has apparently translated into considerable player and sales spikes for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4.

The proposed data comes from Alinea Analytics, which claims daily active players in Resident Evil 2 jumped by 48% in the week after the movie was released, from 78,000 to roughly 116,000. The Resident Evil 4 remake enjoyed a 24% increase in players, the outlet reports, and Resident Evil 3 pulled an extra 25% of users compared to the previous week.

Where and how the outlet sources its stats from continues to be questioned, as it's the sort of precise data a lot of the industry wants to have its hands on. While the information can't be considered completely reliable, I don't doubt a lot of players returned to previous Resident Evil games after seeing the film.

Another factor at play here is Capcom heavily discounted many of the Resident Evil titles around the time of the movie's release. If you look at PS5 specifically, the outlet claims Resident Evil 2 sales almost doubled while the game was on sale, and Resident Evil 4 purchases spiked by 77%.

With these two factors in play at the same time, Alinea Analytics predicts the movie's impact caused an 11% increase in sales of Resident Evil 2 and a 14% increase for Resident Evil 4. Again, these stats don't come from official numbers and can be disputed.

Finally, with a successful and critically acclaimed film under its belt, though, I don't doubt whatsoever fans are returning to past Resident Evil experiences to get their Leon, Claire, Ethan, Jill, or whoever else fix.
