This Famicom Era Shooter, Coming to PS5, Looks Like It Totally Slaps 1

Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE released for the Famicom in 2024, so it’s an all-new game designed specifically for 8-bit hardware.

But if you don’t want to deal with Nintendo’s 80s appliance and would rather just play this title on a contemporary console you own, it’s coming to the PS5 this week, with some bells-and-whistles like wallpapers and rewind.

According to the blurb, this game “prioritises accessibility” – a rarity for the horizontal shooting genre, and particularly games of the era.

“With a life system that regenerates over time and the removal of power-ups, the game design prioritises accessibility,” the blurb reads.

“A strategic shooting experience awaits you, enjoyable for everyone from beginners to advanced players.”

The game itself looks really good, packed with chunky sprites and some cool abilities which see you transforming between ‘Fighter Form’ and ‘Robot Form’.

I’ve no idea how the dev got this running on original 8-bit hardware to be honest, but I suppose you can see the frame rate tanking a little bit during the trailer, which makes sense.

In the PS5 version you’ll be able to apply CRT filters, change the wallpaper, and even toggle between the Japanese and American ROMs, which have subtle differences.

I’m a sucker for 8-bit shooters like this, so I’m definitely going to check it out. What about you?
