Marvel Rivals Is About to Seriously Shrink Its File Size on PS5 1

The PS5's SSD storage is a precious resource; if you don't upgrade it, you're left with a relatively small amount of space to play with, especially as high profile games have ballooned in size over the last few years.

That being said, NetEase has some good news regarding its popular free-to-play superhero shooter, Marvel Rivals.

In a recent video detailing the upcoming Season 9.5, creative director Guangyun Chen takes a minute to go over some changes to the game's install size on various platforms, all of which are getting a decrease.

"In season 9.5, we are implementing a massive texture compression overhaul," he says. "Without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity, we are drastically shrinking the game's footprint on your hard drives."

For PS5, that means a decrease of 15 GB, while the PC version sees an even more impressive 40 GB shedded from the file size.

As of right now, the PS5 version of the game needs a minimum of about 73 GB, according to the PS Store page, meaning it's shrinking in size by about 20 per cent.

"Note: Because we are completely repackaging these assets, the initial Season 9.5 update will be larger than usual, but the final install size will be much lighter," says Chen.

It's always good news to see these sorts of updates. While Marvel Rivals has been receiving a very steady flow of new characters and content since launch, it has gradually built up the amount of space the game takes up on your SSD, so a reduction will be very welcome.
