'We Are So Back': Helldivers 2 Dev Lays Out Plans to Improve Game 1

Helldivers 2 has certainly not fallen off by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s moving into the next phase of its lifecycle, where its all about keeping players – both old and new – engaged.

The studio promised recently to improve its communication with players, and it started that process today with a huge Steam blogpost that outlines its plans for the game.

The post is extremely dense but it revolves primarily around progression: both from a community perspective and a player perspective.

First and foremost will be the introduction of Galactic War Campaigns later this month. These one-to-three week mini-events promise to help make the game’s meta-narrative easier to follow, with each one including an unlockable reward.

The studio says its goal is to make your involvement in the Galactic War Campaigns more transparent, so you can better understand the outcome of your contributions and why.

In terms of the broader experience, Arrowhead will also be adding Planet Warfronts, which will add more activities and objectives when you’re on the ground.

This will all pair with new personal progression systems, which aim to reward participation to your team’s cause as opposed to individual endeavour.

I suppose the big thing here is that ships will be getting more customisation options, and more crafts will be added in the future. There’s no planned release window for any of this, though.

Reading the comments, fans seem broadly happy with the improvements, although there’s a general sense that Arrowhead has taken too long to act on these things.

Ultimately, it sounds like the studio knows where it’s heading with this game again now, and it’s all going to come down to its ability to come good on its promises in a timely manner.
