Unlike Other Sony Exclusives, Wolverine PS5 Will Launch with New Game Plus Day One 1

In games like Ghost of Yotei and even Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Sony’s had success adding New Game Plus several weeks after release.

I think the idea here is to give players an incentive to hold onto their game; the feature tends to be added alongside new content and Trophies, designed to keep fans engaged over time.

But the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine will ship with New Game Plus included day one – and yes, physical fans, it’ll be on the Blu-ray disc.

Quizzed by Eurogamer.net about replayability, Game Director Mike Daly explained:

“On the disc, we're shipping New Game Plus, which means right after you beat the campaign, if you want, you can play the game over again. And our goal was to make sure that that second time through was just as fun as the first, so we let things be a little higher paced, a little higher danger, and more intensity. It's just a few more things to unlock that really change the dynamic of gameplay to keep it exciting the second time around.”

So it sounds like New Game Plus, in this instance, will come with additional unlocks and content that will make the experience feel fresh all over again. From what Daly’s saying, it seems Insomniac is really going to encourage you to play through the campaign twice.

In addition to New Game Plus, all of the levels will be replayable and will feature additional score-based challenges. Completing these will unlock collectibles and crafting materials, as well as new liquors for your “whiskey collection”. Intriguing.

This all sounds a little bit like old-school Insomniac game design to me. Long-time fans will recall that old Ratchet & Clank games and even Resistance had built-in “achievements” before Trophies were even a thing, which encouraged you to replay levels in a variety of different ways to achieve 100%.

With Marvel’s Wolverine being more of a linear experience, it sounds like the dev’s really thought about ways it can improve the replayability of the game, and that’s no bad thing.

I’m excited to see everything Insomniac has in store on launch day – and beyond.
