So, Square Enix finally decided to stop making HD-2D RPGs with crap names and just name its latest one Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy Resonance is the iconic series' first HD-2D instalment, and it looks pretty promising.
But, you'll have to get your head around the fact that this is actually based on the now defunct mobile gacha title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
Square Enix assures us, however, that Resonance "extensively rebuilds and reimagines" Exvius' content. We'll have to wait and see how it all works out...

Resonance is coming to PS5 on the 22nd October. Yes, it's yet another PS5 game arriving in the autumn / fall, adding to the already insane pile.
What do you make of Final Fantasy Resonance? Embark on a whole new adventure in the comments section below.

This looks so cool!!!
I'm really not feeling the art direction. I appreciate HD-2D as a style, but this execution isn't working for me. It gives off vibes similar to that Secret of Evermore, a more Western-oriented entry in the Seiken Densetsu series, which feels like an odd fit.
The protagonist also comes across as a fairly generic anime archetype, reminiscent of a Xenoblad lead. Possibly the lowest the series has gone aesthetically, in my opinion.
That said, I'm curious to learn more details as they emerge.
Best of luck to all reviewers this fall — you'll have your work cut out for you!
Wow! But so soon after DRagons Dogma 2 DLC?
The story has been the weakest part of Final Fantasy for the last few games. I hope they can nail it with this. A return to turn based combat and a strong story should make for a hit.
@Nei I'm already dead.
This may be the first Switch 2 game I get this year.
@Damage99 So soon after 600 other games launch in September and October!
"So, Square Enix finally decided to stop making HD-2D RPGs with crap names and just name its latest one Final Fantasy." Brutal, but also true.
Day one for me 😍
Huh... so... they took the Brave Exvius protagonist and all the other character models and are using them to make a single-player non-gacha game? Very curious. I don't hate it. I really liked BE's sprites. I didn't play enough of it to know if this is just it remade or what.
@Nei That's just Rain from Brave Exvius, so I don't know what's actually happening here.
This is just ff bravus just a not a mobile game
Ah a nice Switch game. Sorry, but this is a major skip for me, grew out of the 2d thing with SNES.
This just seems like a modified version of Brave Exvius, the mobile gatcha game starring Ariana Grande
revealed at switch direct...
this is a final fantasy game i will love hd-2d style..
@Pandalulz Ah! I don't play mobile games so I missed this. Welp, that's just as atrocious.
It's neither new nor original story. It's Brave Exvious, yet another mobile gacha from FF EoS graveyard. The only difference that now you won't have to roll gacha to put Cloud in the party.
Well now… learning this is another repurposed mobile game has me less excited.
Ah! Told you it looked terribad before knowing it was mobile stuff repurposed. I don't care if it's got Final Fantasy stamped on the box: bad aesthetics are bad aesthetics
I like HD-2D on Octopath but the way Square used this artstyle on Triangle Strategy, Live a Live, Dragon Quest 1-3 remake, and now a FF spin-off, it somehow makes the artstyle feels less...special?
@Dalamar So this is just a port of Square dead mobile game?
I'm getting some phone-game vibes from this. Love the HD2D games, but I'll wait on some info before deciding on this one.
@PuppetMaster Sounds more like an offline remake than a straight port
@Pandalulz I kept trying to see if there was anything in the announcement with it being a console, non gatcha version of BE.
Isn't this what they did with Octopath 0? Just a mobile port?
@8th_Observer I see. The only FF mobile game i ever tried was Mobius FF. So i don't have any clue about this game or the rest of FF games on mobile.
@charbtronic So one interesting thing to me, is that from the little I did play of the game, it didn't really have the HD backdrops, so I think they might be doing at least a little bit of remaking and I think that's pretty neat.
Well they learned from Octopath Traveler 0. I have faith this is will be good, and people can FINALLY stop winning about FF going back to turn based combat while ignoring the Octopath series.
Fantastic Direct, now that was for JRPG fans 😜
This looks really cool and the pixel sprites in a 3d world looks great.
Seriously, a fresh, retro FF game that returns to its roots should be low-hanging fruit. Yet, we get a repurposed gatcha mobile game that's leaning on nostalgia of past characters. I don't want Cloud weirdly in what appears could just as well be a knockoff FF game. I want a fresh, high quality story with new interesting characters and turn-based combat adding interesting flourishes. It's really not that hard. Instead, we get this half-assed effort.
It has a world map. I’m in, take my money and all my time.
I was so excited when I first saw this, then my spidey sense started tingling when they showed all the other final fantasy heroes showing up. Then I found out it's based off a mobile F2P game. Soul crushing.
There is nothing i'd like more than for this to be fantastic. But I am highly sceptical and they have a LOT of convincing to do.
@dwayne91 What ? The story was peak in 16.
This looks very good!!
quite deceptive to market this game as a new entry when it is really a retooled mobile game at its core. sounds like it was built with ill intentions in mind and exploiting customers. i don't think they can repurpose it into anything other than a mediocre experience. the sprite work looks nice, but this comes across as a fanservice first game where the story is an afterthought... similar to namco x capcom. it is time to remake ff6 in this style though so the devs can use it as a learning experience if anything.
This looks right up my street. Will definitely be pre-ordering. But wow, September, October & November are gonna be stacked months for releases. Hope everyone is clearing their calendar.
@bizzysgs I disagree. There were good moments but a lot of the characters felt super underdeveloped and the "true" villain deal felt really tacked on, even more so than previous final fantasy games.
I love the HD-2D art style but between Octopath 0 and this I'm not a fan of them re-using mobile game assets and re-releasing them on console.
They remade a gachaslop mobile game that I had zero interest into something actually cool? Based. I wish they'd do that for Nikke and ZZZ too lol
I knew there was something off. That UI is so cheap and now reading it used to be a mobile gatcha game makes sense. I quit OT-0 because of it lacking anything resembling pace. I'm mostly frustrated because if they just made a proper original HD-2D Final Fantasy they'd have something magical. But this, why would they do this.
cough*cough brand new... cough
Is this supposed to be like a crossover with Control Resonant?
Really looking forward to this. I don't mind the mobile origins, square mobile games do tend to be pretty high quality, so that minus the gacha should be fine.
@dwayne91 well you just have no taste.
