Announced last month, Fortnite's Save the World mode is now free-to-play on PS5, PS4, and all other platforms.
Save the World is the PvE co-op campaign the game initially launched with, and it's where Fortnite's signature build feature originated.
It was the Battle Royale mode that secured the longevity of Epic's shooter, but Save the World has always been available to play too. The mode has you teaming up with other players in a sort of tower defence-like game of building forts and fending off encroaching enemies.
When the switch to the free-to-play model was announced, Epic Games removed the ability to purchase the Save the World campaign.
If you did buy Save the World in the past, you'll be given various in-game rewards, like Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold.
Epic hasn't just removed the cost — it's also made a bunch of improvements and additions to the mode to encourage people to check it out.
According to the official blog post, progression has been overhauled with simplified XP resources and better balanced rewards.
The Homebase is no longer just a series of menus, and is now an explorable environment that'll grow and change as you make your way through the Save the World campaign.
Fortnite has been going through a lot of changes lately; prices of V-bucks have increased, several other modes have been shut down, and on top of that, Epic recently laid off thousands of employees.

I'm planning on checking it out even though I stopped playing Fortnite this past Christmas after about 4 years of daily play. I've always been curious about this mode. Think I'll play just long enough to get 1 trophy. About a thousand hours and zero trophies is kinda weird. 😂
